The NBT reduction test and determination of
alkaline phosphatase
activity in the peripheral blood granulocytes (FAG) were done in 94 subjects including 30 blood donors donating blood for the first time and 64 cases of various haematological syndromes. Raised proportion of formazan granulocytes was found in patients with pancytopenia, acute myeloid leukaemia, chronic myeloid leukaemia during blastic exacerbation, Hodgkin's disease during exacerbation and
lymphosarcoma
. These results correlated with increased FAG activity. Lower proportions of formazan granulocytes capable of spontaneous reduction of NBT were found in patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia, in immunohaemolytic anaemias and in plasmocytoma. Of all the above syndromes only in chronic myeloid leukaemia impaired ability of formazan cell formation parallelled decreased FAG activity. In the remaining syndromes FAG activity in the granulocytes was normal or raised. In the remissions of Hodgkin's disease a fall was observed in the proportion of formazan granulocytes to values of FAG. In chronic myeloid leukaemia the proportion of formazan cells showed considerable fluctuations and no correlation was observed between the proportion of formazan cells and FAG activity.

Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) concentration was detected by use of 2 commercially available kits containing antibodies to human AFP--a radioimmunoassay and an enzymetric test. Using neonatal canine serum (a source high in AFP), it was determined that reagents from both kits were able to bind to canine AFP, but a significant difference was detected in AFP concentration. The enzymetric test was superior in detecting canine AFP. Sera from dogs were classified into 6 groups: from dogs with primary hepatic tumors only (group 1); from dogs with primary hepatic tumors and other tumors (group 2); from dogs with normal liver but with other types of neoplasia (group 3); from dogs with nonneoplastic hepatic disease and tumors originating in other organs (group 4); from dogs with nonneoplastic hepatic disease only (group 5); and from clinically normal dogs (group 6). Serum biochemical determinations (
alkaline phosphatase
, alanine transaminase, albumin, total protein, total bilirubin, and serum bile acids) and values from the 2 AFP assays were obtained for all dogs. Serum AFP concentration detected by the enzymetric test was significantly higher in dogs with hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. Values greater than 250 ng/ml were detected in 5 of 9 dogs with cholangiocarcinoma and in 3 of 4 dogs with hepatocellular carcinoma. High serum AFP concentration also was indicative of liver involvement in 2 of 3 dogs with primary hepatic

The diagnostic value of serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity and serum
alkaline phosphatase
(
ALP
) activity in the detection of liver disease in the cat (n = 69) was compared. On the basis of histologic examination of the liver, cats were assigned to 8 groups: group 1--complete extrahepatic bile duct obstruction (n = 5), group 2--cholangiohepatitis-cholangitis syndrome (n = 11), group 3--hepatic lipidosis (n = 15), group 4--neoplasia, including
lymphosarcoma
and myeloproliferative disease (n = 9), group 5--hepatic necrosis (n = 7), group 6--cirrhosis (n = 3), group 7--portosystemic vascular anomaly (n = 4), and group 8--miscellaneous (n = 15). Cats assigned to group 8 lacked substantial histologic abnormalities of the liver. The mean value +/- SD of GGT in 20 clinically normal cats was 0.44 +/- 0.26 IU/L. The highest GGT activity in clinical patients developed in groups 1, 2, and 6. The highest
ALP
activity developed in groups 1 to 4. Significant correlations between GGT and
ALP
activities were detected only in groups 2 (P less than 0.001) and 5 (P less than 0.10). Among 54 cats with hepatic disease, only 11% had both the GGT and

Diagnostic tests in horses showing signs of gastrointestinal diseases are reviewed. The use of rectal exploration is emphasized, and paracentesis as a diagnostic aid is mentioned. Special attention is given to the absorption tests as they are easy to conduct and give a relative measure of the absorptive capability of the intestinal epithelium. Glucose, D(+)-xylose and carbohydrate digestion-absorption tests are compared, and the D(+)-xylose absorption test is preferred because of the univocal curve of absorption (see Figure 1 and 2). Granulomatous hepatitis (GH) is an uncommon histopathologic diagnosis in dogs. On the basis of clinical reports, fungal infections appear to be the most common cause of GH in dogs, but many other potential causes have been identified. The medical records and histopathologic findings for 9 dogs with GH were reviewed to identify additional specific causes of GH in dogs. Diseases associated with GH included intestinal lymphangiectasia (n = 2),
lymphosarcoma
(n = 1), histiocytosis (n = 1), dirofilariasis (n = 1), and histoplasmosis (n = 1). In 1 dog, no other disease process was identified. Of the remaining 2 dogs, 1 had concurrent granulomatous pneumonitis of unknown cause, and the other had periportal hepatitis and temporal muscle wasting. All 9 dogs with GH had clinical evidence of liver disease, such as hepatomegaly, icterus, and ascites, or had high serum
alkaline phosphatase
and alanine aminotransferase activity. Because of the wide variety of potential causes of GH in dogs, an accurate diagnosis should be sought so that appropriate treatment can be chosen and an accurate prognosis given.
