From preclimacteric women (n = 10, 45-50 years of age) with gross cystic breast disease, levels of beta-endorphin, estradiol, progesterone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, cortisol and prolactin were assayed radiochemically in the breast cyst fluid and in plasma. The beta-endorphin concentration (fmol/ml) was increased more than fourfold in the breast cyst fluid (17.6 +/- 4.6 SEM) than in plasma (4.2 +/- 0.5 SEM). In the breast cyst fluid, estradiol was increased 41-fold (1738.2 +/- 350.5 SEM pg/ml), and progesterone 47-fold (65.47 +/- 8.25 SEM ng/ml) more than in plasma. The significantly increased values of beta-endorphin, estradiol and progesterone in the breast cyst fluid and the identification of beta-endorphin in cyst-lining epithelia demonstrate the local synthesis. Growth factor-like properties of beta-endorphin and estradiol are accountable for the propagation of cystic changes. The autonomic formation and function of beta-endorphin, estradiol and progesterone in cyst compartments can not be related with the levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone and cortisol, which were significantly higher in plasma than in the breast cyst fluid. In the breast cyst fluid, prolactin could not detected to be significantly higher than in plasma. In addition the plasma-concentration of testosterone, androstenedione, thyroxin, triiodothyronine, thyroid-binding globulin, sexual-hormone-binding-globulin could be detected within the normal range. In this study we could demonstrate the synergism of beta-endorphin, steroid hormones and peptide hormones which advance the growth of gross cystic disease of preclimacteric women. In patients with small cell carcinoma of lung (SCCL) the sLDH was normal in 24% and sALP in 32% and abnormal hematological findings or a raised sLDH occurred more frequently with liver involvement. Bone scan was positive in 49% of patients and the hematological and biochemical parameters in these patients were similar to those of patients with a normal scan. conjugate and nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) bromochloroindoyl phosphate (BCIP) substrate. The immunohistochemical ER staining was analyzed visually and with the CAS/200 image analyzer (Elmhurst, IL). The visual semiquantitative histologic scores (HSCORE), the automated quantitative assays including the percentage of positive nuclear areas (PNA), and the quantitative immunocytochemical scores (QIC SCORE = PNA x % of positive stain/10) were compared with the corresponding DCC results. Linear correlations were demonstrated between all immunohistochemical assays and the logarithm of DCC, the strongest correlation seen with PNA (r = 0.91). Threshold points for positive HSCORE, QIC SCORE, and PNA assays were extrapolated using DCC as the reference. ER immunodetection by PNA as compared with visual examination alone was enhanced by 18% (up to 88%) in sensitivity and 34% (up to 94%) in specificity, and the DCC concordance rate increased by 26% (up to 91%). cells could be detected by using the combination of the two MAbs than could be detected by use of either MAb alone. In many tumors, some
carcinoma
cells reacted with MAb B72.3, some reacted with MAb COL-4, and some cells reacted with both MAbs. Only 1 of 10 carcinomas showed greater than 75% reactive cells when stained with each MAb individually. In 9 of 10 cases, however, greater than 75% of cells reacted when the combination of MAbs was used. Cell surface and cytoplasmic patterns of reactivity were observed with both MAbs while some pools of extracellular mucin were composed of both TAG-72 and CEA. This study supports the rationale for the use of a combination of anti-TAG-72 and anti-CEA MAbs for in vitro immunologic detection and potential in vivo immunodiagnostic and immunotherapeutic applications for these MAbs in colon adenocarcinoma patients.

. Using the Tc-99m HMDP bone scans of 80 patients scored from 0 (normal) to 2 (diffuse bone involvement) as the "gold standard," a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed. This method allows the determination of different threshold values (corresponding to different couples of sensitivity and specificity) for the assays. An ROC curve comparison was also performed. Results show that B-ALP is the best test for such detection (area under the ROC curve = 0.93; Spearman Rank correlation with bone scan r' = 0.81). Among the other markers, PSA was found to be the best (area under the ROC curve = 0.81; Spearman Rank correlation with bone scan r' = 0.58). In addition to the prostatic tumor markers (PSA and PAP), we suggest the use of the low-cost B-ALP assay in the follow-up of prostate
carcinoma
patients to determine the optimum moment to perform a bone scan. A normal result of this assay indicates a very low probability of bone metastasis; conversely, raising of B-ALP concentration must lead to a bone scan.

Neither agent exhibited significant in vivo antitumor activity when tested against subcutaneous H2981 tumors in nude mice. However, antitumor activity was observed in animals receiving L6-AP 48 h prior to POMP administration. This level of activity was greater than with the drugs alone, or a combination of 1F5-AP (nonbinding control) with POMP.

The medical records of 7 hypercalcemic cats with primary hyperparathyroidism were evaluated. Mean age was 12.9 years, with ages ranging from 8 to 15 years; 5 were female; 5 were Siamese, and 2 were of mixed breed. The most common clinical signs detected by owners were anorexia and lethargy. A cervical mass was palpable in 4 cats. Serum calcium concentrations were 11.1 to 22.8 mg/dl, with a mean of 15.8 mg/dl calculated from each cat's highest preoperative value. The serum phosphorus concentration was low in 2 cats, within reference limits in 4, and slightly high in 1 cat. The BUN concentration was greater than 60 mg/dl in 2 cats, 31 to 35 mg/dl in 2 cats, and less than 30 mg/dl in 3 cats. Abnormalities were detected in serum alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, and
