This work was undertaken to study the myelination and
cholinesterase
activity of the developing white matter of chick embryo spinal cord from the 6th day of incubation until hatching. Myelination of the white matter was always preceeded by the aggregation of neuroglial cells. The sequence of myelination in the cervical and thoracic segments was from before backwards, whereas in the lumbosacral segments it was from behind forewards. Myelination of the ventral column extended craniocaudally, whereas in the posterior column is extended caudocranially. True cholinesterase activity was encountered in the spinal white matter only before and during the process of myelination and was closely associated with the sites of neuroglial aggregations. No
pseudocholinesterase
activity could be seen in the white matter before myelination. However, during the period of active myelination, enzymatic activity was seen only at the sites of formed myelin and after myelination of all tracts; the whole white matter reacted positive for the enzyme. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Changes in CSF enzyme activity were studied after brain trauma for their prognostic value. Raised values of CPK and HBDH were demonstrated in the CSF of patients with severe brain injuries. Standardised cold lesions of the brain were induced in cats. The activities of the enzymes CPK, HBDH, LDH, GOT, GPT, and
pseudocholinesterase
were studied at half hour intervals in the cerebrospinal fluid and at hourly intervals in the serum. A statistically highly significant increase of all enzymes studied developed in the CSF. The greatest changes occurred within four hours of freezing. Large increases could occur in half an hour. Isoenzyme studies demonstrated that CPK and LDH were of cerebral origin. No consistently significant changes could be shown in the serum enzyme activity. It is concluded that after brain injuries, enzymes are released into the extracellular fluid of the brain and transported to the CSF. The limited value of a single enzyme estimation is emphasised. The results described seem to provide indirect evidence for transependymal flow of extracellular fluid in brain oedema.

The exact role of serum
pseudocholinesterase
(PSCE) is not known. Its main role probably consists in the degradation of butyril-choline, an intermediate of lipid metabolism. Decreased values have been described in liver cirrhosis as an index of diminished proteosynthetic function. An increased activity of this enzyme was reported in obesity, diabetes mellitus, nephrosis, hyperthyroidism and in hyperlipemic subjects without obesity. A significant correlation was found between serum cholesterol, triglycerides and PSCE, as an expression of lipid metabolism. In view of assessing the possible change of this enzyme during fattening, the authors investigated PSCE activity during fattening in pigs (the same breed). The results indicate a statistically significant increase of PSCE during fattening, from 30.4 +/- 1.7 to 43.6 +/- 1.7 (p less than 0.001). These results together with those reported in a previous paper concerning blood lipids and cholesterol, show a positive correlation between these parameters and PSCE during fattening in pigs, which might be due to an adaptative increase of the hepatic synthesis of this enzyme in response to the increased lipid metabolism.

Histological and histochemical techniques have been employed to determine the structure and autonomic innervation of paraganglia located in the human pelvis. In foetal and early postnatal tissues, paraganglia formed rounded cellular masses which were frequently in company with the autonomic nerves and ganglia of the urinary bladder and other pelvic viscera. The constituent cells contained only small amounts of

and were unrelated to enzyme positive autonomic nerves; acetylcholinesterase containing nerves were occasionally observed in the capsule and the fibrous septa of the pelvic paraganglia. In early postnatal specimens, pelvic paraganglia frequently contained single or multiple "pacinian-like" corpuscles, each possessing a central region which was rich in both acetyl and

. These structures were rarely observed within autonomic ganglia and were absent 4 1/2 years post partum. By means of a histochemical technique, pelvic paraganglia were found to contain catecholamine which was attributed to the presence of relatively large quantities of noradrenaline. (E1 and E2 locus), and serum alkaline phosphatase. The most relevant observations are: (1) A relative lack of polymorphism, a characteristic feature of the Amerindian populations studied up to now. These data are consistent with the hypothesis of a 'common ancestral background' in Indian populations whatever the degree of sociocultural and linguistic diversity, and the geographical distances. (2) Specific traits due to the frequency of alleles in some systems confer to that tribe a particular position among Amerindians. The effects of genetic drift may be postulated in order to explain the high rate of PGM and 6PGD polymorphism. Furthermore, in that small community, the disappearance of some alleles (pa gene) can plausibly be explained in terms of a balanced influence of mutational and selective pressure.

levels and the nature of the enzyme as shown by the dibucaine number (D.N.) were estimated in 720 controls and 420 lepromatous leprosy patients, and 301 tuberculoid leprosy patients. There was no statistical difference in the esterase levels between leprosy patients and normal controls. But the distribution of D.N. was significantly different in the leprosy patients compared to the normal population studied. The D.N. below 40 indicates the samples with the atypical
pseudocholinesterase
--the presence of which is genetically determined. The distribution of samples with D.N. below 40 was significantly higher in the lepromatous leprosy patients compared to the normal population or tuberculoid leprosy patients. It is proposed that since there is a greater incidence of the atypical enzyme in lepromatous leprosy cases, the presence of this enzyme or the deficiency of the typical enzyme may make a person more susceptible to leprosy.
