Changes in selected enzyme parameters were followed in a one year-long toxicologic experiment on albino rat males given vanadium by mouth at either of two dosages: 0.005 mg/kg b.w., which is the equivalent of the regulated level for 1st category drinking water, or 0.01 mg/kg, i.e., twice the safety standard. The endpoints measured included: free sulfhydryl groups in blood serum, heart, and liver;
cholinesterase
and
creatine kinase
activities in blood serum; catalase activity in blood; and cytochrome oxidase activity in liver and heart. Chronic oral exposures to vanadium 0.01 mg/kg and, to a lesser extent, 0.005 mg/kg were observed to produce disturbances in redox processes and tissue respiration. The evidence from this study should be taken into consideration when regulating vanadium levels in drinking water from a hygiene standpoint.

Concentrations of 34 biochemical constituents of sera were determined on 998 randomly selected urban school children and adolescents aged 8-18 years from Zagreb, Croatia. Reference intervals were obtained by using non-parametric methods to estimate 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles of distribution as upper and lower normal reference intervals, according to the IFCC recommendations. These were compared to reference intervals in the healthy adult population, aged 20-30 years from the same geographical area. Serum glucose, potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, iron, zinc, total serum proteins and electrophoretic fractions, and amylase, did not show age or sex differences; total serum bilirubin, total calcium, phosphate, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, total iron binding capacity, unsaturated iron binding capacity, copper, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase,

Quantitative determination of newly reported enzymes activity in the crude skin toxin (CST) of catfish revealed highest activities of hyaluronidase and lipase, lesser activities of phospholipase A2, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH),
cholinesterase
(CE), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and aspartate transaminase (AST), and least activities of proteinase and 5-nucleotidase (5'-NT). The CST has a hemolytic activity of 54% and no ichthyotoxicity up to 500 ug/ml. The chosen dose of CST (LD12.5) showed a potential cytotoxic activity against solid Ehrlich carcinoma-bearing mice demonstrated by an increase in the mean survival time (238.8%) and tumor growth inhibition ratio (T/C) of 73%. The CST ameliorated the relative weights of heart and liver after three weeks, while modulating the elevation in the relative spleen weight throughout the treatment periods (three, six, and nine weeks). The levels of serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, and liver total lipids were normalized after three weeks, whereas the serum albumin and hepatic glycogen concentrations, as well as ALT, AST, 5'-NT, and G-6-Pase activities were ameliorated after 6 weeks. (CK) activities were significantly modulated throughout the treatment periods. Histological examinations of the tumor and liver tissues of treated tumor-bearing animals were carried out. The change from measuring enzyme catalytic activity concentrations from 25 degrees C to 37 degrees C in the German Federal Republic has led to the need for new reference ranges for defined patient groups and for healthy individuals. Up to now, these are only present as tentative values and are incomplete, especially for children. This article describes a method for deriving reference ranges from results obtained from measurement at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C and the use of percentiles to establish values for 37 degrees C. A total of 1,111,378 data from 507,305 patients were used to establish reference ranges for the following 11 enzymes at 37 degrees C using the test kits from Roche Diagnostics measured on the Modular analyser: acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase,

Ranges for newborns, children and adolescents could be computed with the prerequisite that ranges for 25 degrees C were available and that these had been established and validated. This method of establishing reference ranges for catalytic enzyme activities can be used for all producers, providing the number of data used is sufficient to allow for valid statistical analysis.

The results for cholesterol, glucose, total protein, triglyceride and for the enzymes alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyltransferase and lactate dehydrogenase differed significantly between both methods (P < 0.05). There is a negative correlation between the age of the Bennett's wallabies and the activity of the alkaline phosphatase. Five protein fractions could be separated on cellulose acetate electrophoresis. The mean concentrations of fructosamine and beta-hydroxybutyrate were 447.3 micromol/L and 0.27 mmol/L, respectively. The estimated vitamin A intake had no influence on the vitamin A concentration in serum. The serum vitamin E concentration was in general low and vitamin E was below the detection limit of 0.82 micromol/L in 29 out of 42 serum samples. The use of these analytes is discussed concerning the knowledge about the physiology, nutrition and diseases of macropods.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is an idiosyncratic and uncommon but serious adverse effect that has been reported with both typical and atypical antipsychotic agents. We describe a 58-year-old man with Down syndrome and dementia who was receiving low-dose olanzapine and rivastigmine therapy; he developed NMS 4 months after starting olanzapine. The patient presented with altered mental status, rigidity, fever, diaphoresis, and tremor, and his
creatine kinase
level was elevated. Olanzapine was discontinued, and the patient fully recovered; antipsychotic therapy was not restarted. Based on the Naranjo adverse drug reaction probability scale, olanzapine was the probable cause of the patient's NMS. In addition, use of rivastigmine in combination with olanzapine may have placed the patient at greater risk for NMS, possibly due to an acetylcholine-dopamine imbalance. Clinicians should be aware of the potential for NMS even with low doses of antipsychotics, particularly in patients who have a limited ability to communicate. Concomitant administration of
cholinesterase
inhibitors such as rivastigmine may represent an unrecognized risk factor for NMS development.
