Clinically normal Nubian goats were given the antiprotozoal drug imidocarb at single intramuscular doses of 6, 12, 18 and 24 mg/kg, and the various clinical, biochemical and pathological manifestations were recorded. At a dose of 6 mg/kg the drug produced no change in any of the parameters studied. At higher doses, the drug produced dose dependent changes which included increased heart and respiratory rates, increased defaecation, urination, depression, incoordination of movement, weakness of the hindlegs, recumbency, and finally death. Just prior to death, there was a significant decrease in the number of erythrocytes, and in packed cell volume, and haemoglobin concentration. In plasma there was an increase in the activity of aspartate transaminase,
urea
and creatinine concentrations and inhibition of
cholinesterase
activity. The main histopathological changes were associated with hepatic and renal damage. Three goats were pre-treated with atropine sulphate (1 mg/animal) and after one hour given imidocarb intramuscularly at a dose of 12 mg/kg. The changes were similar but much less severe when compared with those in animals given imidocarb alone at the same dose.

Eight hematologic parameter values, 16 serum biochemical constituents, serum protein fractions and albumin-globulin ratios were determined in blood samples obtained from 879 normal, healthy Beagle dogs of both sexes which had been reproduced and bred in our laboratories. The blood samples were collected from the Beagles that ranged in monthly ages from 1 to 12 and in monthly ages from 13 to 121, which were classified as the adult class. As a result, red blood cell counts, hemoglobin concentrations and packed cell volumes increased with growth. Red blood cell parameters of normal Beagles in our laboratories were rather higher than those in literatures presented by many other researchers. MCV decreased and MCHC increased gradually with age. Total serum protein concentrations increased with growth. alpha 1-1 and alpha 1-2 Globulin fractions descended, but beta 2 and gamma globulin fractions ascended in serum proteins. Alkaline phosphatase activities, inorganic phosphorus concentrations and glucose concentrations decreased conspicuously with growth. Leucine aminopeptidase activities and calcium concentrations decreased slightly. Serum

and LDH activities showed a tendency to diminish similarly. Blood

nitrogen and creatinine concentrations multiplied gradually. Hematologic parameters became almost steady in our 7-month-old dogs or older ones and serum biochemical constituents had a tendency to be stable in our 7- to 9-month-old dogs or older ones in the blood. White blood cell counts, alkaline phosphatase activities, inorganic phosphorus concentrations, glucose concentrations, leucine aminopeptidase activities and calcium concentrations were lowest in the adult class.

1. Alkylation of acetylcholinesterase and
butyrylcholinesterase
by 2-chloro-N-(chloroethyl)-N-methyl-2-phenylethylamine was observed. This alkylating agent was more potent than related compounds previously described, and less stable (half-life 8.5min. at 23 degrees ). 2. Alkylation had effects on hydrolysis of substrates varying from activation for indophenyl acetate to inhibition for acetylcholine, and intermediate effects with five other substrates. The effects were on V(max.) and not K(m). 3. Alkylation caused a variety of changes in sensitivity to inhibition by five carbamates, five organophosphates and four other inhibitors, varying from total protection against tetraethylammonium to mildly enhanced sensitivity to

. 4. The findings suggested the existence of three binding sites, one of which was anionic and another hydrophobic, in addition to the esteratic site.

Sixty male workers in a lindane (gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane)-producing factory were examined with regard to health in comparison with an external control group of 20 clerks. Case history, physical examination, neurologic status, and ECG revealed no significant differences between groups. However, the following significant differences in clinical-chemical blood tests were ascertained: higher polymorphonuclear leukocyte count, lower lymphocyte count, higher reticulocyte count, lower prothrombin (Quick's) test, and lower blood concentrations of creatinine and uric acid. No significant differences were observed in total red and white blood cell as well as platelet counts, hemoglobin content, the other counts of differential blood picture, gamma-GT, GOT, GPT, LDH,

Six Beagle dogs were orally intubated with mixtures of a
urea
-based fertilizer, 2,4-D, mecoprop (MCPP), dicamba, and either bensulide or chlorpyrifos. The mixtures were formulated as they are used in liquid application to lawns. The dogs were given volumes of 10 ml/kg of body weight, delivering the following quantities of each ingredient:

--623 mg/kg, inorganic phosphorus (P2O5)--24 mg/kg, potassium (K2O)--66 mg/kg, 2,4-D--6.5 mg/kg, MCPP--3.26 mg/kg, dicamba--0.55 mg/kg, and either bensulide--60.93 mg/kg or chlorpyrifos--6.77 mg/kg. The dogs were given 3 consecutive daily doses of the mixture containing bensulide (round 1) or the mixture containing chlorpyrifos (round 2). The dogs did not exhibit any clinical signs of illness associated with the treatments. Effects on hematologic values or routine clinical chemical analyses did not occur with the round 2 mixture. Serum lactic dehydrogenase activity decreased by approximately 50% after a single dose of the round 1 mixture was given. Plasma

A clinical and serological study was performed on 267 of 636 volunteers vaccinated against Argentine hemorrhagic fever with the XJCl3 attenuated strain of Junin virus seven to nine years earlier, in order to determine their long-term evolution. This study included a clinical examination, a chest roentgenogram, an electrocardiogram, and the following laboratory determinations: white and red cell count, number of platelets, hematocrit, hemoglobin, sedimentation rate (Katz index),

, nitrogen, glucose concentration, cholesterol, GOT, GPT, gamma GT, alkaline phosphatase,

, and total bilirubin. Neutralization reactions were performed to determine presistence of antibody levels. All clinical and laboratory findings were within normal limits, excluding a long-term pathology attributable to the virus. Of 165 tested sera, 153 (90.3%) had detectable levels of neutralizing antibodies, and the rest had no antibodies after this time. Although these people live in the endemic area, it is considered that only the 9% that had increased antibody levels had suffered a reinfection during the seven- to nine-year period, which acted as a booster. This figure aproximately coresponds to the subclinical infection value found in the region. In the rest, the persistence of antibodies is attributed to the immunization achieved with the vaccine employed.

Patients with severe virus hepatitis and a prothrombin concentration below 25% have a bad prognosis. This is due to direct consequences of hepatic failure and to the rather frequent complications of this disease. The clinical course of such patients is essentially dependent upon the degree of liver regeneration, which again is dependent upon the mass of hepatocytes which are able to regenerate and upon the so called hepatotrophic factors. Patients with severe hepatitis suffer during the first weeks rather frequently from nausea and loss of appetite and for that reason their nutrition is insufficient. In the study recorded here 9 cases were investigated (7 patients with hepatitis B, 2 patients with hepatitis non A non B). The question was asked, if partial parenteral nutrition in addition to a liver diet not containing meat would improve liver function. It could be shown that the prothrombin concentration, which could not be improved by vitamine K1 supplements, was increased during a 7 day parenteral nutrition period from 19,3 +/- 2,9% to 41,5 +/- 8,1% (p less than 0,05), serum albumine and
cholinesterase
activity improved as well. During the first day of treatment there was a significant fall of ammoniac from 115 +/- 10 mumol to 73 +/- 10 mumol/l (p less than 0,05), at the same time production of
urea
did not increase. All patients survived. The results show, that parenteral nutrition can improve liver function and decrease the catabolic status of metabolism.

are found in cerebrospinal fluid and blood plasma of the cat; the ratio of activities acetylcholinesterase/
non-specific cholinesterase
is about 1.5 in cerebrospinal fluid and 0.15 in plasma. A search was made for factors capable of influencing the concentration of the two cholinesterases in cerebrospinal fluid. Either the ventricular system was perfused with artificial cerebrospinal fluid from a lateral ventricle to the aqueduct, or the atlanto-occipital membrane was punctured and cerebrospinal fluid was collected continuously from the cisterna magna. Factors studied included: (a) procedures affecting the composition or formation of cerebrospinal fluid, such as changes in the ionic constituents of the perfusate, the inhibition of cerebrospinal fluid formation by acetazolamide or ouabain, or the rapid intra-carotid infusion of hypertonic

; (b) arousal (noise or stimulation of the central ends of the sciatic nerves), or deepening of anaesthesia; (c) changes in blood pressure; (d) central stimulants and depressants, pyrogens, prostaglandins, antagonists of acetylcholine. Whereas most procedures or drugs tested increased the concentration of acetylcholinesterase, some central depressants (e.g. chlorpromazine) reduced, while another (ether) increased the appearance of acetylcholinesterase in the cerebrospinal fluid. The effect of ether was, in all probability, due to damage to the blood-brain barrier. A rise in acetylcholinesterase concentration was obtained upon stimulation of the central ends of the sciatic nerves; this was inhibited by atropine but not by N-methylatropine, indicating that the rise was due to increased nervous activity and not to the circulatory effects of the stimulation, since the changes in blood pressure caused by the stimulation remained the same after atropine administration. Amphetamine or leptazol raised the levels of acetylcholinesterase but it was not possible to determine whether this was due only to increased central nervous activity, since there was invariably leakage through the blood-brain barrier which by itself would be sufficient to produce the effect. A rise in the level of acetylcholinesterase was seen after administration of pyrogen; this was apparently not a simple effect of warming the body, but due to the action of the pyrogen on centers concerned with temperature control, since warming the animal by external heat failed to produce a similar change.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

In order to assess the thyroid function of patients with nonthyroidal illness, 292 patients with nonthyroidal illness were employed in the present study. These patients were then subdivided into 6 groups according to their original illness. The groups consisted of patients with malignant illnesses (19 males and 10 females; mean age of 59.7 yr.), with chronic hepatitis (14 males and 8 females; mean age of 55.2 yr.), with liver cirrhosis (5 males and 6 females, mean age of 60.4 yr.), with uremia who had been receiving constant hemodialysis 2 approximately 3 times per week (52 males and 38 females; mean age of 48.1 yr.), with diabetes mellitus (50 males and 43 females; mean age of 52.3 yr.) and with cerebrovascular accident (21 males and 26 females; mean age of 74.9 yr.). In addition, 34 healthy persons (15 males and 19 females; mean age of 41.6 yr.) were also employed as controls. Because the differences between mean ages in these groups were significant, the relationship between age and thyroid function was examined. Significant positive correlations between age and total thyroxine (TT4) (r = 0.19; p less than 0.01), and reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) (r = 0.175; p less than 0.01) were found. A negative correlation was also found between age and total triiodothyronine (TT3) (r = 0.231; p less than 0.01). The serum levels of rT3 were elevated in patients with neoplasma and liver cirrhosis but significantly low in patients with uremia. In these circumstances, multiple correlation analyses were performed in order to assess whether there might exist a negative feedback mechanism between thyrotropin and FT4/FT3. The highest partial correlation coefficient was obtained between thyrotropin and FT4. It might, therefore, be concluded that in patients with a nonthyroidal illness, decreased levels of serum thyroid hormones indicate not only the severity of the illness but also the supposed presence of a hypothyroid state.

Statistical analysis of variance was applied to data from determinations of 14 plasma constituents in 25 rats in order to evaluate the analytical, experimental and biological (inter-and intraindividual) component of variance. Blood was taken seven times in intervals of 8-10 days, the last one by catheter technique and the other by heart puncture. The analytical portion of variance was determined by the concurrent analysis of a pool plasma standard. The experimental component of variance was evaluated by the comparison of the variation of the catheter values with that of the pooled data from heart puncture. The coefficient of variation for the latter may be grouped into three categories: less than 10% for protein, Na+, K+, Ca2+; 10-20% for

, alkaline phosphatase and leucine arylamidase and 20-65% for the other enzymes lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase. The results from the samples taken by catheter technique generally revealed the lower values for the mean as well as for the variance. It became evident that the procedure of heart puncture is afflicted with the most aggravating interference factors, thus accounting for most of the experimental component of variance.
