Blood chemistry profiles were obtained for two lines of Japanese quail selected for resistance to aflatoxin, and for a nonselected control line. Nine of the 18 plasma components measured in samples taken at 4 weeks of age changed as a result of selection. Plasma concentrations of total protein, albumin, cholesterol, and potassium, and the activities of lactic dehydrogenase,
glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase
, and
cholinesterase
were significantly elevated in aflatoxin-resistant quail compared with the nonselected line. The activities of beta-glucuronidase and alpha-amylase changed most dramatically; both activities were much lower in the resistant lines than in the control line. In another experiment, serum total protein, albumin, alpha-amylase, and beta-glucuronidase were tested as identifiers of aflatoxin-resistant individuals within a nonselected population of quail. Serum samples obtained from 150 nonselected quail immediately before and 24 hr after administration of an oral dose of aflatoxin were analyzed for each of the four components. The acute toxicosis decreased body weight, serum alpha-amylase activity, total protein, and albumin; whereas, serum beta-glucuronidase activity and the coefficients of variation for each parameter were increased. Correlations between measurements made prior to dosing and parameters reflecting aflatoxin susceptibility were not significant. However, postdose determinations of albumin, protein, and beta-glucuronidase were significantly related to susceptibility parameters. These data indicate that the four blood components tested cannot be utilized to identify resistant birds within a nonselected population of quail without an aflatoxin challenge; but albumin, protein, and beta-glucuronidase are correlated with resistance when measured during an aflatoxin stress.

but also alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase and glutamate dehydrogenase competitively. A mixed type inhibition of
glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase
is in contrast to the increased activity of glutamic-pyruvic transaminase after dichlorvos application. The activity of leucine aminopeptidase is not affected by the substance. After administering rats an acutely toxic dose of dichlorvos (70 mg per kg b.w.) in vitro-inhibitions other than that of
cholinesterase
could not be found.

The effect of fish treated with gamma-beams on the animal body on the whole and on some organs and tissues was studied in chronic experiments on 4 generations of Wistar rats of both sexes. The animals' status was evaluated according to the rats' appearance, behavior, and the time-course of changes in the body weight. In rats of the basic generation, the rate of tumor occurrence and tumor sites were also examined. Morphological and biochemical investigations were carried out over time, namely after 4, 8, 12 and 17 months. The measurements were taken of blood serum and liver proteins, blood sulfhydryl groups and hemoglobin, ascorbic acid in the liver and adrenals, as well as of the activity of
AST
, ALT and
cholinesterase
in the blood serum and in the liver. In the majority of cases, the findings obtained in experimental animals did not differ from those in controls.

Clinically normal Nubian goats were given the antiprotozoal drug imidocarb at single intramuscular doses of 6, 12, 18 and 24 mg/kg, and the various clinical, biochemical and pathological manifestations were recorded. At a dose of 6 mg/kg the drug produced no change in any of the parameters studied. At higher doses, the drug produced dose dependent changes which included increased heart and respiratory rates, increased defaecation, urination, depression, incoordination of movement, weakness of the hindlegs, recumbency, and finally death. Just prior to death, there was a significant decrease in the number of erythrocytes, and in packed cell volume, and haemoglobin concentration. In plasma there was an increase in the activity of
aspartate transaminase
, urea and creatinine concentrations and inhibition of
cholinesterase
activity. The main histopathological changes were associated with hepatic and renal damage. Three goats were pre-treated with atropine sulphate (1 mg/animal) and after one hour given imidocarb intramuscularly at a dose of 12 mg/kg. The changes were similar but much less severe when compared with those in animals given imidocarb alone at the same dose.

The intravenous injection of endotoxins isolated from Escherichia coli serogroups O111 and O78 (2 mg/kg) increased the activities of
aspartate transaminase
and lactate and sorbitol dehydrogenases in the plasma of six- to 11-week-old chickens during the next 24 h. These changes were compared with those produced by adrenocorticotrophic hormone and beta-methasone and were attributed to tissue damage involving the liver followed by increased enzyme synthesis which may have been induced partly by adrenocortical hormones. Further evidence of liver damage was provided by a fall in the activity of
cholinesterase
. The alkaline phosphatase activity gave no indication of cholestasis.

The significance of changes in lymph flow for the extracellular distribution and transport of cellular enzymes and for the level of enzyme activities in plasma was investigated. Specimens of thoracic duct lymph were obtained from an extracorporal lymph shunt in anaesthetized, conscious resting and treadmill exercising dogs (6 km X h-1 for 1 h) The activity of 10 enzymes and of protein content in lymph and plasma were studied, as well as lymph flow, lymphatic transport, and the lymph-plasma ratio of these compounds. Lactate, pH, and blood gases were monitored in venous blood. Lymph flow of 0.80 ml X min-1 in anaesthetized dogs more than doubled (to 1.86 ml X min-1) when the animals were conscious and resting. In anaesthetized dogs lymph enzyme activity was higher only for enzymes of predominately hepatic origin, such as
choline esterase
(CHE) and alanine aminoferase (ALAT), and was lower for
aspartate aminotransferase
(
ASAT
) and aldolase (ALD). In conscious dogs, due to activation of the skeletal muscle "tissue pump", lymphatic transport of enzymes with rather high activity in skeletal muscle, and of protein, is significantly enhanced. Enzyme activities in plasma, however, did not differ between the groups. Lymph-plasma activity ratios higher than one were found for lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH),
ASAT
, creatine kinase (CK), ALD, and phosphohexose isomerase (PHI). The study was conducted in the period of the population growth in an experimental medium with the minimum content of nutrients within the 96 hours of cultivation. It has been derived from the results that most of the enzymes are at the top of their activity in the early logarithmic stage of growth, i. e. in the period immediately following the log stage of population growth when the cells are getting ready for intensive division and growth; another peak activity period is the logarithmic growth stage--alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase are an exception with the culmination of activity in the stationary stage of population growth.

Health conditions were evaluated in 80 electrical workers exposed for many years to polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) mixtures with a 42% mean chlorine content, who had blood PCB concentrations from 41 to 1319 micrograms/kg. The clinical study was based on personal history data, physical examination, and laboratory tests (red cell and leukocyte count; determination of haemoglobin, packed cell volume, bilirubin, serum protein electrophoretic fractions,

, ALT, GGT, and OCT). Fifteen workers were found to have skin diseases--chloracne (4), folliculitis (4), oil dermatitis (1), juvenile acne (1), and dermatitis due to irritative or allergic agents (5). Sixteen workers showed more or less pronounced hepatic involvement, consisting most often of hepatomegaly with an increase in serum GGT,

, ALT, and OCT values. In two workers bleeding cavernous haemangiomas were discovered, in one case associated with chronic myelocytic leukaemia. All the workers with chloracne were employed on electric capacitor impregnation with PCBs, and no definite association was found between chloracne and blood PCB concentrations. Conversely, a significant positive association was found between the abnormal liver findings and blood PCB concentrations, particularly trichlorobiphenyl blood concentrations. The abnormal hepatic findings observed are similar to those reported in experimental animals given PCBs, and in some workers such findings should probably be considered as clinical signs of hepatic microsomal enzyme induction.

Statistical analysis of variance was applied to data from determinations of 14 plasma constituents in 25 rats in order to evaluate the analytical, experimental and biological (inter-and intraindividual) component of variance. Blood was taken seven times in intervals of 8-10 days, the last one by catheter technique and the other by heart puncture. The analytical portion of variance was determined by the concurrent analysis of a pool plasma standard. The experimental component of variance was evaluated by the comparison of the variation of the catheter values with that of the pooled data from heart puncture. The coefficient of variation for the latter may be grouped into three categories: less than 10% for protein, Na+, K+, Ca2+; 10-20% for urea, phosphate and the enzymes as alanine aminotransferase,
choline esterase
, alkaline phosphatase and leucine arylamidase and 20-65% for the other enzymes lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase,
aspartate aminotransferase
and creatine kinase. The results from the samples taken by catheter technique generally revealed the lower values for the mean as well as for the variance. It became evident that the procedure of heart puncture is afflicted with the most aggravating interference factors, thus accounting for most of the experimental component of variance. The observed differences between the single blood drawings, the non-Gaussian distribution for several constituents, and the interactions between the components of variance do not always fit for the statistical concept of additivity of the single components.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
