The influence of high intake of vitamin C in the young growing rats under administration of nickel sulphate in toxic doses has been studied. Ingestion of nickel sulphate depresses the growth rates of rats, alters the vitamin C status in different tissues, inhibits certain enzymes of vitamin C metabolism and changes the activities of alkaline phosphatase and succinic dehydrogenase in the liver and kidney tissues. The
acid phosphatase
activity of liver, kidney and brain tissues of rats and glucose-6-phosphatase activity in liver, and serum GOT activity were stimulated, with reduction in the in the liver GOT activity. There is stimulation in the activities of rat brain inorganic pyrophosphatase and
cholinesterase
. Kidney tissues of rats were found to be more susceptible towards nickel toxicity as compared to the hepatic tissues in respect of morphological alterations. There is almost no alteration in the hepatic lipid composition. Administration of vitamin C in high doses to rats fed nickel salts in toxic doses can restore not only the growth rates but also certain enzyme activities to a significant extent.

The paper provides comparative data of the localization of histochemical reactions demonstrating the activities of alpha-glycerophosphate and succinate dehydrogenases,
acid phosphatase
, non-specific esterases and non-specific acetylcholinesterase in the C cells of thyroids of 26 animals belonging to 5 rodent species. The family Muridae is represented by the Wistar albino rat and albino mouse, the family Microtidae by the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus (Schreber 1780), the field vole Microtus agrestis L. 1761, and the pine vole Pitymys subterraneus De Selys-Longchamps 1825. The observed enzyme activity differences were most conspicuous on comparing the rat and mouse thyroids and in a much less degree the Microtidae thyroids. Among the histochemical reactions tested that for succinate dehydrogenase proved to be least effective as a C cell marker, alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase being better, and
acid phosphatase
and non-specific esterases the best (not in the rat thyroid). The reaction for
non-specific cholinesterase
(with some limitations) gave satisfactory results in the C cells of all animal's thyroids. The present paper continues earlier studies [19] on the morphology of the C cells in thyroid glands of the rodents of the families Muridae and Microtidae and aims at supplementing them with histochemical data of enzymic activities. It deals with enzyme reactions that are employed as C cell markers in Mammals other than Rodents.

Blood samples collected in a single Pygmy tribe, the Aka, living in Bokoka district (Central African Empire) were investigated with respect to the phenotype and gene frequencies of the following 12 enzyme systems:
acid phosphatase
, adenosine deaminase, adenylate kinase, carbonic anhydrase, esterase D, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase 1, phosphoglucomutase 2, phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase and serum
cholinesterase
variants (locus E1 and E2). The data obtained in the study of genetic polymorphisms of this isolated and inbred population show a specific pattern with the following characteristics: the very low frequency of PGDB and pa alleles; the existence of two rare PGM variants at the PGM2 locus, typical PGM26Pyg (4.2%) and PGM29 (0.2%); the high frequency of the pr allele (10.8%) and CAII2 (8.22%) and ESD2 genes (18.4%). Furthermore, at the G6PD locus four distinct alleles have been found: the negroid GdA- (4%) and GdA+ (16%), the common GdB+ (79.2%)--, and the rare Gd+Ibadan Austin (0.7%). Cholinesterase typings disclosed the presence of the uncommon E1f and E1s genes distributed within a single breeding unit. The results are compared with other data previously reported on South African Khoisan and some Negroid populations; the particular genetic background of Pygmies is discussed.

After the per os administration of 1Dlm/ml of botulin, type B. there were observed at the period of development of the limb paralysis and myasthenia morphological changes in the locus coeruleus cells expressed in the development of a more pronounced than normal perinuclear clarification and some nuclear basophilia. Histochemical study of succinic dehydrogenase,
acid phosphatase
,
cholinesterase
, and catecholamines pointed to the intensified neuron metabolism of the locus coeruleus; this could serve as an indication of enhanced energopacemaker function of this nucleus in hypoxia which occurred.

The presentation deals with the enzymatic spectrum of the blood serum (aminotransferase-glutamino-pyruvic and glutamino-oxaloacetic acid, sera
cholinesterase
, histidase, acid alkaline phosphatase) in 100 patients with transient disorders of cerebral circulation in the form of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. These disorders of circulation appeared on the background [corrected] of atherosclerosis and hypertensive disease or in other combination along with vasculitis of a different etiology. The most significant were changes of histidase and
acid phosphatase
activity and an inhibition of
cholinesterase
activity in ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes with expressed focal disorders of cerebral circulation. In an improvement of the clinical state following medicative therapy there was a normalization of these indices. The only exclusion was histidase the content of which in some cases remained cunhanged.

The effects of age-specific peculiarities and the duration of maintaining rats on a ration with 4 per cent of protein (the initial mass of rats in the 1st group 100 g each; duration of the experiment--30 days. Initial mass rats in the 2d group--200 g each; duration of experiment--90 days on the activity of the lysosomal hydrolase was studied. The latter included beta-glucosidase, beta-galactosidase, beta-glucoronidase, beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase, arylsulfatase A and B,
acid phosphatase
, phospholipase A1 and A2,
cholinesterase
, the total proteolytic activity and that of catepsines A, B, C and D. An ambiguity of changes in the enzymes activity in the animals of the 1st and 2d groups was revealed. Placing the growing animals on a ration containing 4 per cent of protein produces an activation of the most of the lysosomal enzymes, whereas in animals of the 2d test group the nature of changes in the activity of individual enzymes proved to differ quite appreciably. Thus, the summary activity of catepsines, beta-glucoronidase and
cholinesterase
was below the control level, while the activity of beta-galactosidase, beta-N-acetyl-glucoseaminidase and phospholipase A1 and A2 went up. A prolonged maintenance of rats on a protein-poor ration led to upsetting the stability of the lysosomal membranes, which manifested itself in a higher solubilization of lysosomal enzymes in vitro.

Three hundred and forty-seven tissue specimens were studied from 23 patients with male pattern alopecia. Characteristic features of pattern alopecia included: the presence of miniature or vellus follicles; a marked enlargement of the sebaceous glands and arrectores pilorum muscles; the presence of connective tissue streamers beneath the vellus follicles; and the thinning of the dermis. A mild perivascular infiltrate of mononuclear cells and mild capillary dilatation was sometimes seen. An increased number of mast cells was often a prominent feature. Histochemical procedures were performed for glycogen, acid mucosaccharides, inorganic substances, and enzymes including alkaline phosphatase,
acid phosphatase
, beta glucuronidase,
cholinesterase
, aminopeptidase, oxidases and dehydrogenases. Histochemical studies did not reveal any significantly abnormal enzyme changes other than the altered vascular and nerve supply to the the miniature follicles.

The structure and histochemistry of the palmar and plantar skin were studied in four adult male marmosets (two Callithrix jacchus and two Callithrix penicillata). In this skin there exist well-developed epidermal ridges, to which are attached one or two ducts of sweat glands. A thick stratum corneum can be seen in the epidermis, while a distinct stratum lucidum cannot be isolated from the other layers. The stratum granulosum is constituted by one or three layers of cells containing keratohyalin granules. Melanin granulations are mainly concentrated in the basal cells of the epidermal ridges. Dendritic melanocytes and amelanotic melanocytes containing alkaline phosphatase are found among the epidermal cells. Glycogen, UDPG-GT and phosphorylases are mainly present in the middle and lower Malpighian cells of the epidermal ridges. Alkaline phosphatase, ATPase, alanyl amino-peptidase and leucine aminopeptidase were absent in the epidermal cells. SDH, cytochrome oxidase, MAO and a certain number of NAD-dependent dehydrogenases (LDH, ADH, MDH, alpha-GPDH, beta-OHBDH and GDH) showed a stronger reactivity in the basal cells and Malpighian layer. The NADP-dependent enzymes (G-6-PDH, 6-PGDH, cis-aconistase and ICDH) were more reactive in the upper Malpighian layer and stratum granulosum. The stratum corneum showed some
acid phosphatase
and nonspecific esterase reactivity. The collagenous fibers intertwined with a small number of very thin elastic ones and a larger amount of reticular fibers run almost parallel to the epidermal ridges in the papillary body. In the reticular dermis some fibers are disposed transversely to the epidermal ridges. Meissner corpuscles reactive to
butyrylcholinesterase
, acetylcholinesterase, nonspecific esterase and G-6-PA are disposed at regular intervals and frequently at each side of the epidermal ridges. Pacinian corpuscles were found only in the hypodermis. The eccrine sweat glands contain glycogen, UDPG-GT and phosphorylase in their secretory, ductal and myoepithelial cells. The secretory part shows a uniform reactivity for every dehydrogenase because it contains only one type of cells (clear cells). The intraepidermal segment of the ducts shows a stronger reactivity to nonspecific esterase and NADP-dependent dehydrogenases than the epithelial cells around it.

The dermal cells in grey, xanthic, and white goldfish integuments were cytochemically characterized for the following enzymatic activities: tyrosinase, DOPA-oxidase, cytochrome oxidase, monoamine oxidase, peroxidase, non-specific esterase,
cholinesterase
, NAD-diaphorase, NADP-diaphorase, aryl sulfatase, nucleotide phosphodiesterase, beta-glucuronidase,
acid phosphatase
, alkaline phosphatase, adenosine triphosphatase, thiamine pyrophosphatase, glucose-6-phosphatase, aldolase, as well as succinate, malate, isocitrate, glutamate, glucose-6-phosphate, 6-phosphogluconate, alpha-glycerophosphate, alcohol, lactate, and beta-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenases. It was found that the epidermis was a significant barrier to the access of cytochemical reaction substrates. Removal of the epidermal barrier provided dermal cell localizations of enzymatic activities which were reproducible. Further, alterations in reaction times and temperatures from the mammalian methodology provided conditions fe various integumental cells were compared for possible interrelationships. The basic foundations for future work with the dermis of poikilothermic vertebrates on an experimental basis were established. In addition, a previously undescribed non-pigmented dermal cell, the "x"-cell, was found to have enzymatic characteristics similar to both melanophores and lipophores. The "x"-cell may be the common precursor of both types of pigment cells.

The visual and somatic sensory cortex were investigated. The activity of acetylcholinesterase and lactate dehydrogenase was similar in the pretrigeminal and non-operated cats. The activity of these two enzymes, as well as that of choline acetyltransferase,
butyrylcholinesterase
and
acid phosphatase
was similar 3 and 8 h after the pretrigeminal transection. Results support the possibility of utilizing the pretrigeminal cat for investigations of biochemical correlates of learning.
