Starting from previous observations emphasizing an increased pseudocholinesterase (PCE) activity in obese and hyperlipemic subjects, the behaviour of this enzyme and of ceruloplasmin was studied in connection with changes of serum lipids and lipoproteins in various types of hyperlipoproteinemia. When compared to values detected in 67 middle-aged normal weight normolipemic subjects, PCE activity was found to be significantly greater (smaller than 0.001) in the 49 overweight subjects without obvious hyperlipemia but presenting a moderate increase of the prebeta electrophoretic fraction. PCE activity was much higher in lean or overweight subjects with endogenous hypertriglyceridemia (68 patients with type IV and 86 patients with mixed hyperlipemia). The slight increase of mean values of PCE activity in the 53 subjects with type II-a was due mainly to overweight subjects, while this enzyme's activity was not significantly changed in lean subjects with pure hypercholesterolemia. PCE activity was positively correlated with serum triglyceride (r equals 0.540; p smaller than 0.001) and the prebeta electrophoretic fraction (r equals 610; p smaller than 0.001). The correlation with beta-lipoproteins was not significant. Ceruloplasmin levels were not significantly changed. It is suggested that elevation of PCE activity could be connected to mechanisms leading to an increased secretion rate of lipoproteins.

This paper reports a study of changes in red blood cell enzymes and some serum parameters during and after treatment of protein-calorie malnutrition. The red cell GSH levels were low during the crisis, together with the levels of GSSG:NADPH reductase, GSH:H2O2 peroxidase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase. After treatment the levels of all these enzymes increased significantly to normal values. Of the serum parameters investigated, significant reduction in the activity of the enzymes cholinesterase, catecholamine oxidase, total proteins, albumin, urea and electrolytes were obvious, and returned to normal values after treatment. Ceruloplasmin activity remained low even after three weeks' treatment and could not be related to copper levels. The results are discussed in relation to anemia and liver damage that may accompany the syndrome.

Oxidative stress is one of the common causes in etiopathogenesis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Hence, the salivary levels of protein thiols, ceruloplasmin, magnesium and pseudocholinesterase were estimated in children with ADHD. The symptoms of ADHD were identified using Conner's rating and DSM IV criteria. Saliva was collected and assessed for the levels of protein thiols, ceruloplasmin, magnesium and pseudocholinesterase, spectrophotometrically. It was also checked for pH and the flow rate was noted down. There was a significant increase (P < 0.001) in the salivary protein thiols and pseudocholinesterase levels in ADHD children when compared to controls. Ceruloplasmin levels did not show any significant change. Magnesium levels were significantly decreased (P < 0.001) in cases when compared to controls. Further, a receiver operating characteristic curve for validity of the biochemical parameters in saliva of ADHD children indicated a sensitivity and specificity above 90% for protein thiols and magnesium values. Our study shows that protein thiols, magnesium, and pseudocholinesterase might have a role in the pathogenesis of ADHD and saliva can be effectively used as a non-invasive tool for evaluation of such children.
