In a patient with paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) enzymatic activities of erythrocytes and leucocytes were studied. Studies of autohaemolysis were also performed. The following erythrocytary enzymes were measured: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD), pyruvate kinase (PK), glutathione reductase (GR), and
acetylcholinesterase
(AcChE). The following enzymes were measured in leucocytes:
Adenosine deaminase
, purine nucleoside phosphorylase, adenine phosphoribosyltransferase, hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase and adenosine kinase. Normal activity of G-6-PD, GR and PK in erythrocytes was found. In leucocytes and lymphocytes activity of purine nucleoside phosphorylase was reduced. Auto-haemolysis in vitro was increased, which could not be compensated by addition of glucose or ATP.

This report discusses a case of T cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (T-CLL) in an elderly white man whose lymphocytes expressed a post-thymic phenotype except for the coexpression of T4 and T8 on 80% to 95% of the cells. Because of the uncommon phenotype, in vitro functional assays were performed that showed decreased mitogenic responses but normal helper activity for B cell immunoglobulin secretion and normal suppressor activity of lectin-induced mitogenesis. Morphologic evaluation by both light and electron microscopy and cytochemical staining were consistent with the "knobby" type T-CLL.

and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) levels were low, but the
acetylcholinesterase
level was normal, which is consistent with the peripheral T cell phenotype. The patient underwent splenectomy, and the spleen cells showed very low levels of T3 and T4 by immunoperoxidase and undetectable levels by immunofluorescence. The morphology of the splenic infiltrate was not significantly different from that in the initial bone marrow. Human T cell leukemia virus (HTLV) antigen and antibody tests were negative. The cells in this leukemia apparently are derived from a transitional stage of maturation between the cortical and medullary thymocyte. A small subset of lymphocytes of identical phenotype to this leukemia has been identified in normal individuals.

We aimed to evaluate whole blood adenosine deaminase (ADA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and
acetylcholinesterase
(
AChE
) activities and to investigate whether there was a correlation between these enzymes and severity of preeclampsia and neonatal outcomes. Sixty-one pregnant women with mild (n = 31) or severe (n = 30) preeclampsia and 50 healthy controls were included in this study. Whole blood adenosine deaminase, myeloperoxidase, butyrylcholinesterase, and
acetylcholinesterase
activities were measured.
Adenosine deaminase
and myeloperoxidase activities were significantly higher in both mild and severe preeclamptic women than they were in the controls. There was also a significant difference between the severe and the mild preeclamptic groups with respect to these enzyme activities. Although BChE activity was lower in the severe preeclamptic women than it was in the healthy controls (P < .05),
AChE
activity was similar in all groups (P > .05). We noted an inverse correlation between ADA activity and birth weight (r = -0.337) (P < .05) and between MPO activity and Apgar scores at 1 and 5 minutes (r = -0.438 and r = -0.475, respectively, P < .01). We concluded that elevated ADA and MPO but not
AChE
activities may correlate with disease severity and neonatal outcomes in preeclamptic women. Further studies are needed to elucidate the exact roles of ADA and MPO in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia.

The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of subacute and subchronic treatment of some plant growth regulators (PGRs), such as abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellic acid (GA3), on neurological and immunological biomarkers in various tissues of rats. The activities of
acetylcholinesterase

AChE
) and butrylcholinesterase (BChE) were selected as biomarkers for neurotoxic biomarkers.
Adenosine deaminase
(
ADA
) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured as indicators for immunotoxic investigation purpose. Wistar albino rats were orally administered with 25 and 50 ppm of PGRs ad libitum for 25-50 days continuously with drinking water. The treatment of PGRs caused different effects on the activities of enzymes. Results showed that the administrations of ABA and GA3 increased
AChE
and BChE activities in some tissues of rats treated with both the dosages and periods of ABA and GA3. With regard to the immunotoxic effects,
ADA
activity fluctuated, while MPO activity increased after subacute and subchronic exposure of treated rat tissues to both dosages when compared with the controls. The observations presented led us to conclude that the administrations of PGRs at subacute and subchronic exposure increased
AChE
, BChE, and MPO activities, while fluctuating the
ADA
activity in various tissues of rats. This may reflect the potential role of these parameters as useful biomarkers for toxicity of PGRs.
