The histrochemistry of the adrenal glands was studied in four adult male marmosets (two Callithrix jacchus and two Callithrix penicillata). It was impossible to demonstrate any reactivity to UDPG-GT, ADH, alanyl aminopeptidase, leucine aminopeptidase, xilitol (NAD-dependent) dehydrogenase, beta-glucuronidase and aryl-sulfatase in these glands. Total phosphorylase was found in scattered cells of the glomerulosa and adjacent outer fasciculata of one C. penicillata. The dehydrogenases (LDH, G-6-PDH,6-PGDH, NADPH2-TR,ICDH,SDH,NADH2-TR, alpha-GPDH, beta-OHBDH) as well as the hydrolases (except alkaline phosphatase, ATPase, and acetylcholinesterase) showed a stonger reactivity in the cortical part. Some hydrolases (naphthol acetate esterase, acid phosphatase) and cytochrome oxidase were less reactive in the zona glomerulosa, where the dehydrogenases were more abundant. The outer fasciculata and the reticularis also showed a strong dehydrogenase reactivity.

Gastrocnemius muscles in mice were minced and orthotopically implanted. At the same time all nervous supply to this muscle was completely removed. It was observed that initially the pattern of muscle regeneration was similar to what was observed in a normally innervated implant. But by day 6, distinct degeneration of regenerated muscle fibres sets in, which continues unabated so that by about 3 weeks there usually remains only a thin band of connective tissue in place of the implant. Histochemically, there is a gradual loss of SDH, myofibrillar ATPase and cholinesterase activities within the degenerating muscle fibres and a corresponding appearance of these enzymes in the regenerating fibres. In the denervated implants, with the onset of degeneration of the regenerating fibres, the enzymatic activities were also lost. Histochemical fibre typing was not achieved within the regenerating fibres. The regeneration and degeneration pattern of the denervated muscle observed in the present study is compared with the one observed in other animals.

The epithelial cells in the taste buds of C. jacchus and C. penicillata show a moderate amount of ribonucleic acid an a concentration of a PAS-positive diastase-resistant material at their apical part. These cells are devoid of UDPG-GT, phosphorylases, G-6-PA, alanyl aminopeptidase, leucine aminopeptidase, cholinesterase and MAO; they present a weak reaction of F-1, 6-P Ald, LDH, SDH, MDH, cytochrome oxidase, beta-OHBDH, nonspecific esterase and acid phosphatase and a stronger reaction to ADH, NADPH2-TR, ATPases, alpha-GPDH, alkaline phosphatase, 5-nucleotidase and GDH. Although some enzymes (alkaline phosphatase, 5-nucleotidase and ATPases) have an almost uniform reactivity by the several taste buds, the other ones react with a lesser intensity in the smaller uniform reactivity by the several taste buds, the other ones react with a lesser intensity in the smaller taste buds of the fungiform papillae. As a rule the apical part of the cells shows a stronger enzymatic reactivity. The taste buds of the marmosets are penetrated by acetylcholinesterase positive nerve fibers whereas the autonomic ganglia in the connective tissue contain both-acetyl and butyrylcholinesterase.

The activities of the transmitter metabolizing enzymes monoamineoxidase and acetylcholinesterase and of succinic dehydrogenase were investigated in the telencephalon of Salmo irideus (teleostei). There is a high reaction intensity of the MAO in the whole telencephalon with graded differences between the various nuclear areas. It is highest in the area dorsalis telencephali; the larger fiber tracts (Tr. olfactorius medialis et lateralis; medial and lateral forebrain bundle) are strong MAO-positive, too. There is an extremely weak AchE-reaction throughout the telencephalon. The only nuclear area which is clearly histochemically demonstrable is the regio Dm2 in the area dorsalis telencephali. The SDH-activity is demonstrable in the whole telencephalon. The activity is higher in the area dorsalis as compared with the area ventralis telencephali. In the ependym there are only a few traces of MAO- and SDH-reaction products. The recent findings may support, from a histochemical view, the hypothesis that the telencephalon of Salmo irideus represents brain structures which show structural and functional similarities with limbic telencephalic structures of higher vertebrates.

The structure and histochemistry of the palmar and plantar skin were studied in four adult male marmosets (two Callithrix jacchus and two Callithrix penicillata). In this skin there exist well-developed epidermal ridges, to which are attached one or two ducts of sweat glands. A thick stratum corneum can be seen in the epidermis, while a distinct stratum lucidum cannot be isolated from the other layers. The stratum granulosum is constituted by one or three layers of cells containing keratohyalin granules. Melanin granulations are mainly concentrated in the basal cells of the epidermal ridges. Dendritic melanocytes and amelanotic melanocytes containing alkaline phosphatase are found among the epidermal cells. Glycogen, UDPG-GT and phosphorylases are mainly present in the middle and lower Malpighian cells of the epidermal ridges. Alkaline phosphatase, ATPase, alanyl amino-peptidase and leucine aminopeptidase were absent in the epidermal cells. SDH, cytochrome oxidase, MAO and a certain number of NAD-dependent dehydrogenases (LDH, ADH, MDH, alpha-GPDH, beta-OHBDH and GDH) showed a stronger reactivity in the basal cells and Malpighian layer. The NADP-dependent enzymes (G-6-PDH, 6-PGDH, cis-aconistase and ICDH) were more reactive in the upper Malpighian layer and stratum granulosum. The stratum corneum showed some acid phosphatase and nonspecific esterase reactivity. The collagenous fibers intertwined with a small number of very thin elastic ones and a larger amount of reticular fibers run almost parallel to the epidermal ridges in the papillary body. In the reticular dermis some fibers are disposed transversely to the epidermal ridges. Meissner corpuscles reactive to butyrylcholinesterase, acetylcholinesterase, nonspecific esterase and G-6-PA are disposed at regular intervals and frequently at each side of the epidermal ridges. Pacinian corpuscles were found only in the hypodermis. The eccrine sweat glands contain glycogen, UDPG-GT and phosphorylase in their secretory, ductal and myoepithelial cells. The secretory part shows a uniform reactivity for every dehydrogenase because it contains only one type of cells (clear cells). The intraepidermal segment of the ducts shows a stronger reactivity to nonspecific esterase and NADP-dependent dehydrogenases than the epithelial cells around it.

A description is given of an outbreak of equine infectious anaemia (E.I.A.) in Campania [at Naples and Aversa (Caserta)]; it was diagnosed by clinical, pathological and serological examinations (Coggins test). Using the serum of 45 horses with E.I.A. and 11 healthy horses (controls), numerous investigations were carried out on: enzymes, intrinsic coagulation factors, lipids and other substances. The results obtained were very interesting and show that in this disease there are significant increases in many enzymes (LDH, LAP, gamma-GT, CPK, PK and ALD) and copper. Insignificant increases were found in other enzymes (SDH, GLDH, MDH, ICDH, AIP, lysozyme, cholinesterase, GOT and GPT) and also intrinsic coagulation factors, lipid substances (total cholesterol, esterified cholesterol, triglycerides) and glucose. LDH-1-isoenzyme remains unchanged, whilst AcP decreases slightly.

In the group of 107 patients poisoned by carbon monoxide (18 patients), ethanol (10), barbiturates (18), glutehimide (10), tranquilizers (19), organic solvents (10),salicylates (3), organochlorines (8), and sulfonamides (5)--the activities of 8 serum enzymes were determined for 6 consecutive days of treatment, the enzymes being as follows: aminotransferases, cholinesterase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate, alpha-hydroxybutyrate, glutamate, and sorbitol dehydrogenase. The antipyrine half-life was also assayed. It has been shown that the poisonings by particular groups of poisons do not bring about characteristic changes in the activity of enzymes that might be of any diagnostic value. The intensity of changes was connected withe depth and duration of toxic coma. Most frequently an increase ensued in the activity of AspAt and AlAt in the third 24-hrs period, and an increase in the activity of SDH in the first 24-hrs period. In the group under examination there were 26 drug abusers in whom a shortening of the antipyrine half-life was discovered. They were less responsive to toxic doses of drugs, and the enzymatic changes in them were less distinct. No changes in the activity of tested enzymes, which are characteristic of toxicomania, were found.

1. The acute oral LD50 and chronic LC50 toxicity values for ethylene dibromide (EDB) were estimated for japanese quail. 2. Single sub-acute oral and intraperitoneal doses of EDB (1/2 LD50) and chronic oral doses of EDB (1/3 LC50) were administered to quail in order to characterise the sub-lethal effects of EDB residues. 3. At 24 h after sub-acute dosing, relative liver weight, plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AT) [EC 2.6.1.1] and L-iditol (sorbitol) dehydrogenase (SDH) [EC 1.1.1.14] were elevated and decreases were found in hepatic total lipid, total protein, AT and glutamic dehydrogenase (NAD (P)+) (GDH) and plasma cholinesterase (ChE) [EC 3.1.1.8] and total lipid. 4. Following chronic administration, elevations in relative liver weight, plasma ChE and total lipid, haemoglobin and haematocrit were found and hepatic AT, GDH and total lipid were decreased. 5. The changes in hepatic and plasma enzymes and constituents are discussed in relation to possible biphasic effects resulting from EDB exposure.

The comparative effects of diazinon and malathion on Najdi sheep were described in sheep allotted as untreated controls, diazinon-treated at 25 mg/kg/d or 50 mg/kg/d, and malathion-treated at 25 mg/kg/d or 50 mg/kg/d. Although serum cholinesterase (ChE) activity was reduced, neither significant clinical signs nor severe pathological changes were produced in sheep dosed orally with 25 or 50 mg diazinon/kg/d for 21 d. Both oral dose levels of malathion were lethal to sheep between 1 and 6 d and caused, prior to death, hyperexcitability, tremors, clonic convulsions, salivation, nasal discharge, incoordination of movement, paresis of the limbs and recumbency. Lesions were widespread congestion and hemorrhage, patchy pulmonary cyanosis, gastroenteritis and hepatonephropathy. These changes were accompanied by increases in the activities of serum SDH and AST, in the concentrations of urea, triglyceride and cholesterol, and decreases in ChE activity and in RBC, PCV and Hb values.

Defective innervation of the neuromuscular junctions (NMJ) was recently described in intestinal neuronal dysplasia type B (IND B). The aim of the present study was to correlate the alterations in NMJs to other classically described parameters in dysganglionoses and to determine the relationship between NMJ abnormalities in IND B and clinical symptoms. The rectal biopsies and full-thickness colonic biopsy specimens of 17 patients were studied applying histochemical (acetylcholinesterase [AChE], lactic dehydrogenase [LDH], and succinic dehydrogenase [SDH] reactions) and immunohistochemical (neuronal-cell adhesion molecule [NCAM] and SY antibodies) methods. Thirteen patients had Hirschsprung's disease (HD). IND B was diagnosed in 11 (associated with HD in 8 cases, isolated in 2, and associated with hypoganglionosis in 1). In the aganglionic segment of HD there was very intense AChE activity; in contrast, NCAM- and SY-immunoreactive nerve fibers were markedly decreased. A spectrum of abnormalities was observed in IND B, usually more severe in the most distal segments: giant and immature ganglia in the submucous plexus were observed in all cases; heterotopic myenteric ganglia were frequent (72.7%); hyperganglionosis was observed in 6 (54.5%) and was not related to the patients' age; thick and tortuous NCAM- and SY-immunoreactive nerve fibers, irregularly distributed in the colonic wall, were observed in 81.8% of the cases. No relationship was observed between abnormalities of NCAM- and SY-immunoreactive nerve fibers and AChE activity, ganglion-cell maturity, heterotopy, or the clinical symptoms presented by the patients with IND B. In hypoganglionism, low AChE activity and a slight decrease in NCAM- and SY-immunoreactive nerves were observed. Thick and tortuous, irregularly-distributed intrinsic NCAM- and SY-immunoreactive nerves were observed in every colon layer in IND B. Our results do not support IND B as a NMJ disorder.
