Bromocriptine increased the concentration of prolactin in oestrogen-induced tumours of the rat pituitary gland. Prolactinaemia was significantly reduced and at the same time there was a considerable decrease in the weight of the tumour, in the incorporation of tritiated thymidine into DNA and in the activity of
DNA polymerase alpha
. The results suggested that the intracellular content of prolactin controls cell proliferation in this experimental tumour. A
hypothalamic disorder
is proposed as the primary cause of these tumours.
