DuPont Merck announced an expanded access program for Sustiva, a non-nucleoside transcriptase prohibitor. The once-daily drug in combination with Crixivan is effective in reducing viral load and increasing CD4 cell counts. The drug is well tolerated and shows no serious side effects. The manufacturer is submitting its application for approval to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the second quarter of 1998.
