E3 insert was sequenced and analyzed. The insert fragment is 646 base pairs (bp) long and is 100 bp shorter than the vector sequences it replaces. It interrupts the expression of the E3B 10.4K, 14.6K, and 14.7K genes, but not the E3A glycoprotein (gp) 19K gene. Sequence analysis and Southern blotting suggest that the insert might originate from salmon sperm DNA used as carrier during the construction of dl309. MFE-280 endometrial cancer cells express PP14 (
placental protein
14) in vitro. PP14 is normally found in the secretory endometrium and in placental tissue. MFE-280 cells, which are tumorigenic in nude mice, were derived from a recurrent, poorly differentiated endometrial carcinoma. The cells were initially grown in suspension culture and later transferred to monolayer cultures. Karyotyping revealed near-diploidy with a complex heterogeneous aberration pattern. MFE-280 cells were positive for the cytokeratins 7, 8, 18 and 19 as well as for vimentin. The expression of PP14 in MFE-280 cells was demonstrated by immunochemistry and

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most common cancer among men in the developed world affecting the oral cavity, salivary glands, larynx and pharynx. Utilizing tissue from patients with HNSCC, we sought to systematically identify and catalog genes expressed in HNSCC progression. Here, we demonstrate the successful use of laser capture microdissection for procuring pure populations of cells from patient tissue sets comprised of oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) and matching normal tissue. We have previously described a high molecular mass, asexual stage antigen from Eimeria maxima (EmTFP250), implicated as a target of maternal antibodies produced by breeding hens infected with this protozoan parasite. Following partial purification of the protein by ion exchange chromatography, N-terminal and internal peptide sequences were generated and used in the design of degenerate PCR primers. Osteosarcomas are malignant tumors of the bone that are characterized by complex genetic changes, including loss and amplification of chromosome regions. Region 17p11.2 approximately p12 is frequently found to be amplified in this tumor, suggesting the presence of an oncogene (or oncogenes) important in osteosarcoma tumorigenesis. We had previously determined amplification profiles for this region. Reasoning that amplification of a causative oncogene in a tumor should result in increased expression of that gene, we have now determined the expression status of genes and expressed sequence tags (ESTs) in 17p11.2 approximately p12. We constructed a 17p11.2 approximately p12-specific macroarray containing 40 genes and 21 ESTs from this region, which was used for expression profiling of 11 osteosarcoma samples (9 tumors and 2 cell lines) and of normal human osteoblasts. Compared to normal osteoblasts, genes with at least threefold increased expression were considered to be overexpressed in the tumor. -polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and nested-PCR were used to subtype HIV-1 by the Heteroduplex Mobility Analysis (HMA) and HCV by the line probe assay (INNO-LiPA). HIV and HCV seroprevalence was 3.2% (95% CI 2.0-4.9) and 2.5% (95% CI 1.5-4.0), respectively. Intravenous drug use was the risk factor most strongly associated with both HIV and HCV infections, even in a population with few intravenous drug users (n = 6); incarceration was also associated with HCV. HIV/AIDS-positive sexual partner and homosexual/bisexual behaviors were associated independently with HIV-1. The prevalence of HCV infection among HIV-positive persons was 42% (95% CI 20-66), higher than in HIV-negative persons (1.2%; 95% CI 0.5-2.5). HIV-1 subtype B was identified in the env and gag regions of the genome. HCV subtype 3a predominated among co-infected persons and one HCV subtype 1a was detected. Overall, a similar prevalence of HIV and HCV infections and a higher prevalence of HCV among HIV-positive persons were observed. Integrated HIV and HCV screening at HIV testing sites may represent a unique opportunity to provide diagnosis and prevention strategies at a single visit.

Slovenia is a small European country with a total of 547 HIV-infected individuals cumulatively reported by the end of 2011. However, the estimated incidence rate of HIV infections increased from 7.0 per million in 2003 to 26.8 per million in 2011. In this study, we assessed the prevalence of transmitted drug resistance (TDR) in the past 6 years (2005-2010) and analyzed the time trend of the proportion of men having sex with men (MSM) and HIV-1 subtype B among newly diagnosed individuals in a 15-year period (1996-2010) in Slovenia. Among 150 patients included in the study, representing 63% of HIV-1 newly diagnosed patients in 2005-2010, TDR was found in seven patients (4.7%). The prevalence of TDR to nucleoside

inhibitors, and protease inhibitors was 2% (3/150), 2% (3/150), and 0.7% (1/150), respectively.
