From February 25th to June 28th of 1999, the authors carried out a prospective and descriptive study of the use of the preventive male condom in schools and universities through an anonymous inquiry questionary dealing with 1065 persons involving 650 boy students, 181 girl students, 128 college boys and 106 college girls. The questionnary involved 5 headings: the socio-demographic characteristics, the use of condoms, the sources of information and supply, the number of partners, and information about the prices. The inquiry essentially let out that: 56.4% of target population used the male condom. Boys used condoms more often than girls. Most of the boys who used condoms were unmarried. Young people used condoms for preventive purpose against STD/AIDS and for contraception in 82.5 cases. The reason more oftenly given by those who didn't like condoms was the reduction of the sexual delight. The mature age and highest level of instruction were factors predicting the use of condoms. About 2/3 of the information sources on condoms were from media. The drugstore was the main source of supply. More than half of the users wished an extension of the Condom commercialization. The problems of acceptability and access to condoms related more of religions and socio-cultural order than geographical and financial.

Our objective was to determine a sociodemographic profile (typology) of men for whom a relatively greater number of sex partners was associated with engaging in unprotected anal sex. A cross-sectional survey of 150 men who have sex with men (MSM) attending a large sex resort was conducted. The sex resort was located in the Southeastern United States. Men from 14 states attended the resort and completed an anonymous, self-administered, questionnaire. The typology that emerged showed that the co-occurring risk behaviours (greater number of partners and having unprotected sex) were reported by older men (P = 0.002), men with incomes of at least US 50,000 dollars (P = 0.018), men growing up in rural areas (P = 0.005), men who were not knowingly HIV positive (P = 0.004), and men who had received the full series of vaccinations against hepatitis B (P = 0.029). This typology may be useful for more efficient targeting of prevention and counselling programmes designed to reduce sexually transmitted infection incidence among this high-risk (and understudied) population of MSM.

The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and co-infection with HIV among injecting drug users (IDUs) in Togliatti City, Russia. Unlinked anonymous cross-sectional survey of IDUs recruited from community settings, with oral fluid sample collection for HCV and HIV antibody (anti-HCV, anti-HIV) testing, was carried out. The anti-HCV prevalence was 87% (357/411), anti-HIV prevalence 56% (234/418), and 93% (214/230) of HIV-positive IDUs were co-infected with HCV. Only 23% (94/411) of those HCV positive self-reported as such. In an adjusted model, increased odds of HCV positivity were associated with needle and syringe, as well as injecting paraphernalia sharing in the last four weeks. IDUs injecting more than once with the same needle also had raised odds. There were no marked associations between HCV positivity and the duration of injecting or age group. Almost all IDUs were HCV positive, and almost all HIV-positive IDUs were HCV co-infected. There is an urgent need to maximize syringe distribution coverage, develop health promotion targeting HCV prevention for IDUs, and improve access among IDUs to treatments for HIV and HCV infection.

During 2001 and 2002 an anonymous outreach-screening programme in Melbourne, Australia, offered testing for gonorrhoea and chlamydia on-site at men-only saunas. Modifications were made to this screening programme to offer a comprehensive testing clinic for sexually transmissible infections (STIs), including HIV. The comprehensive clinic was evaluated after one year of operation, and comparisons were made with the earlier anonymous screening programme. The comprehensive outreach clinic made contact with fewer men (n = 557), however, men tested had a higher prevalence of gonorrhoea and chlamydia (17%), and all men tested positive for STIs/HIV were followed up. The findings and comparisons outlined in this paper may be used for different communities to decide what screening programme model best suits their individual situation: anonymous programme with fewer tests offered, confidential and comprehensive STI/HIV testing programme, or both. On the basis of our evaluation, we have opted to continue the comprehensive STI/HIV testing programme in local men-only saunas.

The aim of this paper is to characterize the health and well being of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Australia. The HIV Futures 3 Survey was a self-complete anonymous questionnaire distributed through multiple sites. Data were collected on health, clinical and social variables. There were 894 responses, 6% of the known HIV-positive population. Respondents were aged between 20 and 77; 79% were homosexual men. In all, 58% reported a viral load of <500 copies/mL, and 81% a CD4 count of over 250 cells/microL. In all, 38% reported another major health condition, and 26% a mental health condition. A total of 72% were using antiretroviral therapy. About 48% were in a regular relationship, and 42% of regular partners were HIV-positive. In all, 55% had stopped working because of HIV and 31% were living in poverty. While the overall picture for PLWHA in Australia is optimistic, there remain clear patterns of health and social disadvantage that require ongoing policy vigilance and service provision.

To assess the potential for HIV acquisition among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Guangzhou, China, we conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous, face-to-face survey of MSM in the metropolitan area of Guangzhou, China. As a pilot recruitment for a cohort study, participants were recruited by convenience sampling through newspaper and television advertising, website information, and respondent referral. Blood samples were tested for HIV, hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), and syphilis. Client-centered HIV and STD counseling was provided.A total of 201 MSM were interviewed and 200 blood samples were tested. The prevalence of HIV antibody was 0% (97.5% CI 0-1.8%); 17.5% of MSM were HBV surface antigen positive; 1.0% had HCV antibodies; 10.5% had antibodies to syphilis. Syphilis seropositivity was associated with sex with a foreign MSM in the last six months and 10.4% reported sex with a foreign MSM overall. The majority (54.7%) reported unprotected anal sex with other men. Nearly one-third (31.8%) had regular female partners; 25.9% were currently married to a woman; 6% had casual female partners; 4.5% had sex with a female sex worker; 4.5% had sex with a male sex worker; and 12.9% had unprotected vaginal sex and unprotected anal sex with a man in the past six months. Only one MSM reported injection drug use (0.5%). The currently low prevalence of HIV but high level of unprotected anal sex, high prevalence of syphilis infection, and sexual networks that include foreign MSM point to a transient window for HIV prevention among MSM in Guangzhou. We recognize challenges to recruiting a representative sample of MSM and retaining them in longitudinal cohort studies.

A cross-sectional anonymous study of 261 STD (sexually transmitted diseases) outpatients and 288 outpatients from other hospital departments was conducted at four major city hospitals in Buenos Aires. High prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (14.5%) and syphilis (30.2%) was noted. Fifty-two persons were diagnosed with both HIV and syphilis. Of the 87 HIV cases observed, 52 (59.7%) were co-infected with syphilis. Stratified analysis by gender showed that the prevalence of HIV, syphilis and HIV/syphilis co-infection was significantly (p < 0.001) higher in men than women (HIV: 20.1% vs. 4.6%; syphilis: 39.3% vs. 17.4%; co-infection: 13.6% vs. 1.7%). Integrated HIV/STD intervention programs and more effective surveillance are required in Argentina.

From 1990 through 2002, 25,250 anonymous and free HIV tests were performed at a testing site, which carried out the majority (85%) of anonymous testing in Belgium. During the same period, approximately 7.3 million confidential tests were registered nationwide. The rate of new HIV infections diagnosed at the anonymous testing site was 11.1/1000 tests; it was significantly higher than the rate observed among confidential tests (relative risk = 7.41; P < 0.0001). New HIV cases diagnosed through anonymous testing include a higher proportion of young adults (42.0% versus 32.5% in confidential testing; P < 0.001) and a higher proportion of men who have sex with men (32.7% vs. 25.9% in confidential testing; P < 0.02). Anonymous and free HIV testing was particularly sought by persons with higher infection risk, and efficiently contributed to HIV diagnosis in this population. Anonymous and free testing should be and remain an accessible alternative integrated in HIV testing policies.

An assessment of risk-taking behaviour among men who have sex with men (MSM) attending a sauna venue was undertaken, using a standardized questionnaire, after which outreach screening was introduced targeting MSM. The epidemiology of the continuing outbreak of syphilis was reviewed to determine the factors driving the outbreak and assess the benefit of continuing outreach screening. Findings among the 163 respondents at the sauna included a high rate of casual sex and a tendency not to disclose HIV status. Over 12 months, 51 cases of early syphilis were recorded. Our review showed a decline in incidence in MSM after outreach screening, but an increase in heterosexual spread. Given the frequent anonymous nature of syphilis transmission, traditional contact tracing is ineffective. Outreach screening is required at gay venues and other community settings to target at-risk populations.

To get information in the sexual and contraceptive behaviors in Chinese female college students, a randomized cluster sampling was conducted in colleges and universities in Wuhan Area, China, in terms of types of colleges, subjects (literature, sciences, medicines, art etc), and grades etc. A total number of 2450 questionnaires were distributed, with 2365 questionnaires returned being valid. The return rate of valid questionnaires was 96.6%. The questionnaire investigation was conducted on a multiple-choice and anonymous basis. Data were input into computer and SPSS12.0 software package was employed for statistical analysis. Among the female students, 1196 had the experiences of hug and kiss (50.57%) and 423 (17.89%) had sexual experiences (sexual intercourse). The first sexual intercourse took place at the age of 19.23+/-1.74 y. There were significant differences in the sexual experiences among the majors of different subjects, with the rate of sexual experiences in art majors (43.17%) and high-grade students (34.31%) being the highest. The causes of the first sexual intercourse included sexual impulse, curiosity, intention to strengthen the relationship or to show loyalty to boyfriend and sometimes violence. While the motives of the sexual intercourse within the past one year before the investigation were to satisfy the sexual needs and to strengthen the relation with their boyfriends. With both first intercourse and sexual experiences within last one year, the partners of the sexual intercourse were mainly their boyfriends (95.7% and 97.3% respectively), but the partners also included acquaintances, "one night stand" partners and customers of sex trade. Some of them had multiple sexual partners, with the highest number of the sexual partners being 11. In the first sexual intercourse of the subjects, 44.0 % of them did not take any contraceptive measures; only 16.4% of them used condoms. In the sexual intercourse within the last one year, only 44.6% took contraceptive measures every time they had sexual intercourse. Among those who took contraceptive measures, 64.4% used condoms. Among those who had sexual intercourse, 101 persons got pregnant, with a rate of pregnancy being 4.3%, accounting for 23.9% of all who had sexual intercourse. Among those who got pregnant, 78 persons got pregnant once; the others became pregnant more than two times, the highest being 5 times. There were 122 persons who had inflammation of reproductive system, mostly vaginitis. Other conditions included venereal warts and herpes genitalis. It is concluded that the rate of sexual behaviors is high in female college students and there exist promiscuity, unexpected pregnancy and transmission of STD in the students.
