The specific, precise detection of volatile metal chelates has been obtained by coupling the effluent from a gas chromatograph directly to the burner head of a commerical atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). Quantitation of chromium in the nanogram range has been accomplished with a detection limit of 1.0 ng. The chelation-extraction-gas chromatographic separation procedure coupled with the selective detection by AAS gives a relatively interference-free system that has been used to quantitatively analyse for chromium in standard biological materials NBS SRM 1571 Orchard Leaves and SRM 1569 Brewers Yeast. Metal chelates of iron, copper and cobalt have also been detected by this system.

1,2-Diaminobenzene and its derivatives react with selenous acid in acidic solution to form the piazselenols, which can be extracted into toluene. Microgram amounts of selenium can be determined spectrophotometrically by measuring the absorbance of these piazselenols extracted into toluene. A more sensitive method, in which the piazselenols extracted into toluene are detected by electron-capture gas chromatography, has been developed. In order to find a more sensitive reagent, 13 piazselenols were synthesized. The retention behaviour and sensitivity in electron-capture detection gas chromatography and the distribution ratios between aqueous solution and toluene were studied for each piazselenol extracted into toluene. Of these piazselenols, 4,6-dibromopiazselenol, formed by the reaction of 1,2-diamino-3,5-dibromobenzene with selenous acid, was found to be best as regards sensitivity and distribution ratio. Under the optimal conditions for the formation and the extraction of the piazselenol, the practical detection limit was 1 ng. Selenium(VI) and total selenium in NBS Bovine Liver, SRM 1577, were determined successfully.

The ko-standardization method used in instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was applied to the determination of some elements in geological and biological reference materials. We analyzed NBS SRM 1572 Citrus Leaves and SRM 1645 River Sediment and the CRM materials, IAEA Soil-7, SL-1, and MA-A-2. Comparison is made with reference values whenever available. Good agreement is found. The potential of the ko-standardization method in reactor INAA is discussed.

The NIST has produced and is in the process of certifying two new leaf CRMs, SRM1515 Apple Leaves and SRM 1547 Peach Leaves, as replacements for the no longer available NBS Orchard Leaves and the almost depleted Citrus Leaves. These two new materials have been processed and are being thoroughly evaluated and should provide the most advanced natural matrix botanical trace-element reference materials available. Caution should be used in determining a basis weight (drying) for these CRMs because of their very fine particle size. Homogeneity has been established by instrumental neutron activation analysis on both leaf materials for five elements, to date, to better than 1.5% (1 s) for 100-mg sample sizes.

A study was undertaken to determine the average values for elements in normal human brain (11 individuals, age group 65-75). Twelve brain parts were selected from both hemispheres. Determinations were carried out by NAA and ICP-AES. The main elements (Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, P, S) and trace elements (Al, B, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) were investigated. Quality control was ensured by using NBS Bovine Liver SRM. The results obtained with independent methods were compared, and the data show a good correlation. On the basis of these investigations, the regional distribution of elements can be given.

The conditions were evolved and checked for simultaneous determination of cadmium and lead levels in plant material using the flame technique of ASA. For decomposition of the organic substances in plant material wet mineralization was used with a mixture of nitric acid, perchloric acid and sulpuric acid in volume proportions 6:2:0.25. The levels of cadmium and lead were determined in the organic phase after extraction with n-butyl acetate of the previously produced complexes with NaDDTK. The obtained limits of cadmium and lead detectability were 0.002 and 0.02 mg/kg respectively. The recovery rate of the method ranged from 96 to 98%, while the variability index was from 2.6 to 10.2%. The correctness of the evolved analytical procedure was confirmed by determination of the content of both elements in the NBS-SRM 1571 standard (orchard leaves) and by participation in the international interlaboratory investigation of the Polish standard (dried cabbage leaves).

The urine level of trace elements has been investigated in some normal adults under different workplace environments in Bangladesh. The samples were collected from 58 subjects, randomly selected from about 500 adults working in 10 different workshops and factories located in Dhaka city. Samples were analyzed by the external beam PIXE method. Proton beams of 2.5 MeV energy and 20 nA intensity were used for sample irradiations. For 40 microC irradiations, the concentration of 14 elements in total (K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Br, Rb, Sr and Mo) in different groups were measured by comparison with a calibration curve obtained from the NBS Orchard Leaf standard (SRM 1571). The results from different workplaces are reported in terms of amount of excretion per unit volume of the sample collected. They, however, do not reflect the total daily excretion level of different subject groups.

A method based on isocratic high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection at 292 nm is proposed as a candidate reference method for the determination of uric acid. Data obtained by this method are compared with those from an isotope dilution-gas chromatography-mass spectrometric method (ID-GC-MS), using [1,3-15N2]uric acid as internal standard and selected mass detection at m/z = 456 and m/z = 458. The inaccuracy of the ID-GC-MS method is maximally 0.4% for NBS-SRM-909 control sera with a concentration of 483 mumol/l. The coefficient of variation between days is 0.26%-0.80% and 0.37-0.90% for 14 control sera from other suppliers. The maximum bias of the HPLC method is 0.6%, and the coefficient of variation between days is 0.31%-0.65% for NBS-SRM-909 control sera. The coefficient of variation between days for the other 14 control sera tested is 0.35%-0.66%. Comparison of the HPLC method with the reference ID-GC-MS method resulted in a coefficient of correlation of r = 0.9998 (n = 14). The concentration of uric acid in the tested control sera ranged from 160 to 624 mumol/l.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations are fixed several hundred degrees above the glass-transition temperature and cooled rapidly through the glass-transition temperature range. Thermal expansion data from room temperature to above the glass-transition temperature range are important for the thermal expansion of the porcelain to be matched to the alloy. The effect of heating rate during measurement of thermal expansion was determined for NBS SRM 710 glass and four commercial opaque and body porcelain products. Thermal expansion data were obtained at heating rates of from 3 to 30 degrees C/min after the porcelain was cooled at the same rate. By use of the Moynihan equation (where Tg systematically increases in temperature with an increase in cooling/heating rate), the glass-transition temperatures (Tg) derived from these data were shown to be related to the heating rate.

An improved two-step clean up procedure involving alumina-silica column chromatography and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) of air particulate matter (NBS SRM 1648) and river sediment extracts and a GPC clean up procedure for marine biota samples are described for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with two to five rings and selected polychlorinated biphenyl congeners, respectively. Bio-Beads SX-12 and SX-3 were used as packing materials. The recoveries obtained varied from 52 to 78% depending on the compound. Quantitative data for NBS SRM 1648 were comparable with those described previously for this sample.
