In this work we analysed the dynamics of prolactin serum concentration in male patients with chronic hepatitis C. A group of 52 men were included in the study, 26 of them constituted the control group. The diagnosis of the disease was confirmed by the presence of HCV-RNA in the serum and by the histological examination of the liver. None of the examined men was diagnosed with any co-existing disease nor any infection markers of HAV and HBV were found. The prolactin concentration was determined in the serum of patients twice: on the 2nd day of hospitalisation and after 4 weeks of hospitalisation by the use of radioimmunological method (RIA) applying a prepared set of reagents RIA-PROL-
CTK
-4 (Sorin Biomedica, Italy). The results were statistically analysed. An analysis of the dynamics of prolactin serum concentration in male patients with chronic hepatitis C shows a statistically important increase in this hormone serum concentration.

A study of lanthanum nitrate on the seed germination and the growth of rice was conducted. The results of this experiment indicate that soaking in a proper concentration of La(NO3)3 could accelerate the germination of the rice seeds, significantly increase seed vigor and chlorophyll contents, and improve root growth. Because during the soaking stage with La(NO3)3 the absorbed water and imbibition process of the rice seeds was quickened, the plasma membrane permeability of the seeds was increased, O2 and H2O were easier to get into the cell, and the respiratory rate was enhanced. During the germination stage, La(NO3)3 could enhance the activities of alpha-amylase, proteinase, lipase, and other hydrolytic enzymes and the contents of plant hormones, such as IAA, GAs,
CTK
, and so forth, except ABA contents, changed little.

The increasing frequency of strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae with reduced sensitivity to penicillin is making it more and more important to determine the sensitivity of individual strains before and after treatment with this antibiotic. It was recently demonstrated that the concentrations of penicillin inhibitory to Neisseria gonorrhoea depend upon the medium employed. This important observation made it desirable to have available for interlaboratory comparisons a non-commercial reproducible medium which would support the growth of the vast majority of the gonococcal strains in circulation. Using a plate dilution procedure, various modifications of the
HYL
medium described elsewhere were compared with the routine medium for carrying out sensitivity determinations. Both stock and fresh strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae were used in the experiments. The 50% inhibitory concentrations observed on the two media did not differ to any great extent, being only about 40% higher on the routine medium than on the
HYL
medium. The difference between the
HYL
medium and the routine medium was somewhat greater for the less sensitive strains than for the more sensitive strains. The variations in the difference from strain to strain were larger for the more sensitive fresh strains than for the less sensitive strains and the stock strains. This observation limits the value of a correction method employing, for example, three reference strains as a means of ensuring comparability between the results of different laboratories.

In order to explore quick, efficient inducement and proliferation of Panax notogingseng callus, the stem sections were taken as explants in the following 5 groups of medium: 1. MS + 2,4-D 2 mg/L (CK), 2. MS + 2,4-D 2 mg/L + N6-BA 2 mg/L, 3. MS + 2,4-D 2 mg/L + KT 2 mg/L, 4. MS + 2,4-D 2 mg/L + ZT 2 mg/L, 5. MS + 2,4-D 2 mg/L + LFS 2 mg/L. The results showed: 1. LFS (Lingfasu, a new kind of
CTK
) was able to promote the callus formation earlier 1-2 week than CK and to raise the rate of induced callus as high as 81%, higher 30% than that on other 4 mediums; 2. On medium 5, the fresh weight of callus increased 360.2% after being cultured 40 d, on other 4 mediums increased only 13.4%-21.8%. At the same time, 1 g callus cultured 40 d could obtain dry material 81.5 mg on medium 5, but on other 4 mediums only 21.5-25.9 mg; 3. The callus cultured on medium 5. continual generation to generation could live as long as more than 3 years, on other 4 mediums the callus hardened and aged quickly.

Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a proliferative disease that most often affects children. Presentation of vulvar lesion alone in adults is rare. We report a case of a 69-year-old woman with a vulvar lesion of 6 years of evolution. HE stain and immunohistochemical study using
CTK
, ACL, HMB 45, VIM, S 100, LN 5 y CD 1a were performed. CLH, although unusual presentation, it is must keep in mind when appear vulvar lesions in older woman simulating infection or proliferative neoplastic lesions of skin since is necessary rule out systemic engagement and periodical control of patients.

Transgenic lines (GC-1) carrying a senescence-inhibition cheimeric gene, IPT (isopentenyl transferase) gene, CBB23, a isogenic lines carrying Xa23 gene for resistance to bacterial blight, and Hexi15, a commercial cultivar showing high resistance to blast disease, were used as donors to pyramid IPT gene and Xa23 by marker-assisted selection (MAS). Seventeen BC1F1 plants pyramiding Xa23 gene and IPT genes were obtained from three multi-cross combinations. Then, the plants carrying Xa23 and IPT genes were crossed with parental lines of two-line hybrid rice, such as 9311, E32, Pei' ai 64S and W9834S. The progenies were backcrossed the acceptor parents. A total of 17 plants carrying Xa23 and IPT genes were detected by PCR, disease resistance identification and analysis of

contents of in the four combinations of "(9311///Hexi15/CBB23// GC-1) x 9311", "(E32///Hexi15/CBB23//GC-1) x E32", "(Pei'ai 64S///Hexi15/CBB23//GC-1) x Pei' ai 64S" and "(GC-1/CBB23//W9834S/Hexi15) x W9834S". These plants showed resistance to blast disease by inoculating test using 21 the lines of Pyricularia grisea from Northern China. Six plants of BC2F1 pyramiding Xa23 and IPT genes were further obtained in the combinations of "[(9311///Hexi15/CBB23//GC-1) x 9311] x 9311", "[(E32///Hexi15/CBB23//GC-1) x E32] x E32". After backcrossed and self-crossed 1 approximately 2nd, the plants pyramiding Xa23 and IPT genes can be used in the program of hybrid rice breeding.

5'-Flanking region of rlpk2 gene was cloned by using PCR-based genomic DNA walking method (Fig.1), and designated P(rlpk2) (GenBank Accession Number: AY870314). Results of sequencing analysis showed that P(rlpk2) contains several putative cis-elements that respond to
CTK
, ABA, GA or IAA, as well as elements that respond to different environmental stresses, such as dehydration, coldness, wounding and etc. An expression vector containing the P(rlpk2)-GUS fusion gene was constructed (Fig.2) and transferred into soybean seedlings and Micro-Tom cotyledon explants by Agrobacterium-mediated method. A strong transient expression of GUS was observed in both soybean plumule and Micro-Tom cotyledon callus (Fig.3), thus confirming the promoter activity of P(rlpk2).

In this study we compared and validated commercial immunoradiometric assays (IRMA) to determine thyroglobulin (Tg) levels in serum. From a set of 440 samples, 68 were selected to calculate the validation parameters and the clinical performance of the assays. The commercial kits evaluated were the Tg-
CTK
(DiaSorin), IRMAZenco Tg (ZenTech), and SELco-Tg (Medipan). We found that 21% of the collected samples were in the critical range of concentration. Detection limits were calculated as being below 3 microg/L. Intra- and inter-reproducibility were lower than 3.1% and 9.2%, respectively. Dilution and recovery studies provided quantitative determinations. Correlation regression coefficients from the results of the methods were obtained. The determined concentrations were compared with the clinical evidence of disease. Variation in the 125-iodine-labeled antibody concentration and control charts showed the robustness of the methods. Analysis time and the simplicity of the methods were also evaluated. Reliable Tg determination is important for monitoring patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC), controlling other thyroid diseases, and assessing the quality of imaging techniques. A strategy for verification and comparison based on analytical parameters and clinical performance is proposed.

Plasmoblastic lymphoma (PBL) is a subtype of the diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, typically present as extranodal disease associated with human immune deficiency virus (HIV) infection. PBLs are often the initial manifestation of AIDS. Here we present a case of PBL concerning the oral cavity. A 34-year-old woman presented a tumor in the oral cavity that involved the maxilla and gingiva (confirmed by CT-scan). The gingival biopsy showed a massive infiltration by large lymphoid cells with round, vesicular nuclei, prominent nucleoli, fine chromatin and an significant amount of basophilic cytoplasm which express CD79a, CD138, cytoplasmic lambda light chain and LCA, without staining for CD20, CD38, CD3 and
CTK
. Serological analysis confirmed HIV positivity. PBLs lack most B-lineage markers, but many express CD79a in at least some of the cells, therefore generate difficulties in differential diagnosis. Overall assessment and correlation of the histopathological and immunohistochemical features with the clinical findings and serology investigation are the most helpful diagnostic tools and can lead to the final diagnosis.

Tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type substrate-1 (SHPS-1), a transmembrane protein, plays a vital role in cell migration and proliferation. Our previous studies have shown that insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) stimulates SHPS-1 phosphorylation, leading to recruitment of SHP-2, c-Src, Shc, and Grb2.p85 to phosphorylated SHPS-1. Assembly of this signaling complex is required for optimal stimulation of both mitogen-activated protein and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathways. The main aim of the present study was to identify novel proteins that interacted with the cytoplasmic domain of SHPS-1 (SHPS-1/CD) in response to IGF-I stimulation and define the role of these interactions in mediating specific biological functions. We performed a functional proteomic screening to identify SHPS-1 binding partners using combination of mRNA display and the tandem affinity purification-tag methods. Screening identified a number of proteins not previously known to interact with phosphorylated SHPS-1/CD. These novel SHPS-1 binding partners represent several functional categories including heat shock proteins, protein kinases and phosphatases, and proteins that regulate transcription or translation. In Vivo and in vitro studies suggested that most of the proteins bound to SHPS-1 via binding to one of the four SH2 domain containing proteins, SHP-2,
CTK
, SUPT6H, and STAT1, that directly bound to SHPS-1. Although the binding of most of these proteins to SHPS-1 was positively regulated by IGF-I, a few were negatively regulated, suggesting differential regulation of protein complexes assembled on SHPS-1/CD in response to IGF-I. Further studies showed that truncation of SHPS-1/CD significantly impaired IGF-I-dependent AKT signal transduction and subsequent biological functions including cell survival, protein synthesis, protein aggregation, and prevention of apoptosis. The results emphasize the importance of formation of SHPS-1 signaling complex induced by IGF-I and provide novel insights into our knowledge of the role of this molecular scaffold in regulation of IGF-I-stimulated signal transduction and biological actions.
