We measured voluntary water and sodium intakes of 40 inbred strains of mice. Groups of approximately 10 males and approximately 10 females from each strain received a series of 48-h tests with a choice between a bottle of water and a bottle of one of the following: water, 25, 75, and 225 mM NaCl, 25, 75, and 225 sodium lactate. Sodium solution intakes were influenced by strain, sex, anion and concentration: Nine strains drank significantly more chloride than lactate, and only one strain (I/LnJ) drank significantly more lactate than chloride. The other 30 strains drank similar volumes of chloride and lactate. Sodium intakes were higher in females than males of 8 strains and did not differ by sex in the other 32 strains. Some strains had consistently high sodium intakes and preferred all sodium solutions to water (129S1/SvImJ, MA/MyJ, NZW/LacJ and SWR/J), some showed
indifference
(i.e. preferences not significantly different from 50%) to all concentrations tested (A/J, C57BL/6J, FVB/NJ and
SEA
/GnJ), and some had consistently low sodium intakes (AKR/J, C3H/HeJ, C57BL/10J, CBA/J, DBA/2J, I/LnJ, JF1/Ms, LP/J, NON/LtJ, PERA/EiJ, PL/J, and RIIIS/J). The results illustrate the diversity of voluntary sodium intake in mice and will assist in the selection of appropriate strains for focused genetic and physiological analyses.

The aim of this study was to explore the cerebral correlates of functional deficits that occur in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). A specific neuropsychological battery, the Social cognition & Emotional Assessment (
SEA
; Funkiewiez et al., 2012), was used to assess impaired social and emotional functions in 20 bvFTD patients who also underwent structural MRI scanning. The
SEA
subscores of theory of mind, reversal-learning tests, facial emotion identification, and
apathy
evaluation were entered as covariates in a voxel-based morphometry analysis. The results revealed that the gray matter volume in the rostral part of the medial prefrontal cortex [mPFC, Brodmann area (BA) 10] was associated with scores on the theory of mind subtest, while gray matter volume within the orbitofrontal (OFC) and ventral mPFC (BA 11 and 47) was related to the scores observed in the reversal-learning subtest. Gray matter volume within BA 9 in the mPFC was correlated with scores on the emotion recognition subtest, and the severity of apathetic symptoms in the
Apathy
scale covaried with gray matter volume in the lateral PFC (BA 44/45). Among these regions, the mPFC and OFC cortices have been shown to be atrophied in the early stages of bvFTD. In addition,
SEA
and its abbreviated version (mini-
SEA
) have been demonstrated to be sensitive to early impairments in bvFTD (Bertoux et al., 2012). Taken together, these results suggest a differential involvement of orbital and medial prefrontal subregions in
SEA
subscores and support the use of the
SEA
to evaluate the integrity of these regions in the early stages of bvFTD.

Breast cancer is molecularly heterogeneous and categorized into four molecular subtypes: Luminal-A, Luminal-B,
HER2
-amplified and Triple-negative. In this study, we aimed to apply an ensemble decision approach to identify the ultrasound and clinical features related to the molecular subtypes. We collected ultrasound and clinical features from 1,000 breast cancer patients and performed immunohistochemistry on these samples. We used the ensemble decision approach to select unique features and to construct decision models. The decision model for Luminal-A subtype was constructed based on the presence of an echogenic halo and post-acoustic shadowing or
indifference
. The decision model for Luminal-B subtype was constructed based on the absence of an echogenic halo and vascularity. The decision model for
HER2
-amplified subtype was constructed based on the presence of post-acoustic enhancement, calcification, vascularity and advanced age. The model for Triple-negative subtype followed two rules. One was based on irregular shape, lobulate margin contour, the absence of calcification and hypovascularity, whereas the other was based on oval shape, hypovascularity and micro-lobulate margin contour. The accuracies of the models were 83.8%, 77.4%, 87.9% and 92.7%, respectively. We identified specific features of each molecular subtype and expanded the scope of ultrasound for making diagnoses using these decision models.

Adult-onset leukoencephalopathies are clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorders that affect predominantly the cerebral white matter of the central nervous system. Clinical and neuroimaging-based approaches have been developed to improve diagnostic processes for adult-onset leukoencephalopathies. However, the differential diagnosis is often challenging. Recently, knowledge of the genetic basis of leukoencephalopathies has been accumulated rapidly, which provides powerful diagnostic approaches. The article provides an overview of adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP), focusing on the clinical presentations of cognitive impairment and symptoms of movement disorders. ALSP is a subtype of dominantly inherited leukoencephalopathy caused by
CSF1R
mutations. ALSP typically develop in adulthood, with cognitive decline, psychiatric symptoms, and motor symptoms of movement disorders. Cognitive symptoms in ALSP are characterized by frontal lobe dysfunctions such as executive dysfunction, attention deficits and
indifference
. The cardinal motor symptoms of movement disorders ALSP were gait disturbance and bradykinesia, which may appear as the initial symptoms. Thus, ALSP should be recognized as both a cognitive disorder and a movement disorder.
