The paper reports the examination of a new test strip Reflotest-Hypoglycemie, which was developed specifically for the hypoglycemic range. In 2 series of 110 respectively 120 samples of capillary blood taken from premature and full term infants the blood glucose concentrations were determined using Reflotest-Hypoglycemie and the hexokineasured with the test strip agree well with the results of hexokinase method in a range less than 50 mg/dl. Bilirubin and hematocrit values do not affect the glucose test. Glutathion and ascorbic acid interfere with the test strip method but this error is neglectable because of physiological low concentrations of these substances.

We assessed the analytical performance of the co-immobilized hexokinase (EC 2.7.1.1) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49) method for D-glucose analysis on the Technicon SMAC. The enzyme-containing coils were usable for one month, or 12 000 tests. Bilirubin, hemoglobin, lipemia, creatinine, uric acid, citric acid, and ascorbic acid did not interfere. Results with this method were compared to those by the National Glucose Reference Method. The upper limits of the total error estimate (a combination of random and systematic errors) were 76, 74, and 125 mg/liter at concentrations of 500, 1200, and 3000 mg/liter, respectively. The error estimates were less than allowable errors based on medical usefulness; thus the method was judged to perform acceptably with respect to the Reference Method. We also present performance data for the routine SMAC glucose oxidase (EC 1.1.3.4)/Peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7) 3-methyl-2-benzothianolinone hydrazone-N,N-dimethylaniline method, the direct hexokinase method with the Du Pont aca, and the glucose oxidase oxygen-rate method with the Beckman Glucose Analyzer.

We assessed the HemoCue system for measuring glucose in 5 microL of whole blood. A glucose dehydrogenase-based reaction is used with dried reagents contained in disposable microcuvettes, which are filled with blood by capillary action. Automated hexokinase and YSI 23AM glucose analyzer methods were used for comparison. Overall imprecision (CV) was better than 4.5%, with no significant differences in results between three different HemoCue photometers and four batches of microcuvettes. Regression slopes (+/- SE) were 0.947 (0.011) with the YSI and 0.966 (0.015) with the hexokinase method. Analytical recovery of added glucose was 101-106%, and the system functioned with hematocrits up to 0.65. Bilirubin up to 453 mumol/L did not interfere, but high concentrations of endogenous (greater than 3 mmol/L) and exogenous triglycerides gave positive interference. The system proved stable and robust under a wide range of storage and handling conditions; performance was impaired only at high ambient temperature (37 degrees C). We conclude that the HemoCue system should prove useful for glucose measurement; further testing outside the laboratory is warranted.
