In 15 grossly obese children (10 boys, 5 girls, age: 13,1 +/- 2,4 years, mean
overweight
71 +/- 13%) an oral glucose load (45 g/m2) was performed. Blood glucose was determined by means of
hexokinase
method and serum insulin was estimated by radioimmunoassay. According to the criteria of Rosenbloom our results show, that 5 out of the 15 children must be considered to have abnormal glucose tolerance tests. In comparison to reference values basal serum insulin values were slightly elevated, the corespondending concentrations after the oral glucose load were markedly increased in all children. Furthermore, serum lipoprotein determinations were performed using the Lipid-Research-Clinics-Method, NIH, Bethesda: Comparing the mean LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol concentrations with those of age and sex matched controls no statistical differences could be found. However, the HDL-cholesterol values showed a tendency towards lower concentrations. Our data suggest that disturbances of carbohydrate metabolism in grossly obese children could be only detected after the performance of an oral glucose tolerance test.

The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an energy-restrictive, high-protein diet with or without exercise on muscle morphology and biochemistry. Moderately
overweight
postmenopausal women (49-58 yr, body mass index: 25-42 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to three groups for 12 wk of intervention; namely, a control group, a group on a 4.2 MJ/day diet, and a group on 4.2 MJ/day diet combined with aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Muscle morphology and biochemistry analysis were performed in 69 and 58 women, respectively. In contrast to the diet-only group, the die-plus- exercise group significantly increased the muscle fiber areas by 20-25%, the number of capillaries per muscle fiber type I by approximately 20%, and the activities of citrate synthase by approximately 35% and
hexokinase
by approximately 20% (P < 0.05). There were no statistically significant changes in any other muscle variable (P < 0.05). The respiratory exchange ratio decreased in both intervention groups by 2-4% (P < 0.01). It is concluded that 12-wk period of an energy-restrictive high-protein diet was not associated with major changes in muscle morphology or biochemistry. The addition of exercise to the die led to an adaptive increase in muscle fiber areas and in the oxidative capacity of the muscles.

Objectives. The study aimed to assess the relationship between body fat and each of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), and to test the effectiveness of fat mass (FM), percent of body fat (PBF), BMI, and WC in predicting high levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG). Methods. A total of 167 adolescents aged 11-17 years were recruited from Rabat region. BMI and WC were determined using standard equipments. FM and PBF were derived from isotope dilution technique. FBG was determined by the
hexokinase
method. Results. Regardless of the weight status, BMI showed a strong positive correlation with FM and PBF in both genders. WC was significantly correlated with FM in boys and girls, and with PBF in different groups of girls and boys of the study sample. However, there was no significant relationship between WC and PBF in normal weight and
overweight
-obese groups of boys. FBG was highly correlated with FM and PBF in girls of the study sample and in
overweight
-obese girls. Similar significant relationship between FBG and both BMI and WC was observed in
overweight
-obese girls, while there was no significant association between FBG and other variables in boys and normal-weight girls. Conclusion. BMI and WC were closely associated with FM and PBF, respectively. However, the degree of these associations depends on gender and weight status. BMI may provide a better proxy estimate of overall adiposity than WC; nevertheless, both of them would appear to be a reasonable surrogate for FM and PBF as screening tools to identify adolescents at risk of developing excess body fat and high level of FBG.
