In 342 patients undergoing open heart surgery we determined the serum enzyme levels of GOT,
GPT
, LDH, alpha-HBDH,
LAP
, CK and CK-MB from the beginning of the operation up to the 14 th postoperative day. There was an elevation of serum enzymes depending on the type of operation, the duration of extracorporal circulation and the postoperative course. A pattern of enzyme changes for uncomplicated cases is described. The investigations demonstrate a statistically significant correlation between the elevation of "liver specific enzymes" and right heart failure on one hand and of "heart specific enzymes" and myocardial ischemia on the other hand. It is concluded that only repeated determinations beginning with the operation enable to evaluate serum enzyme levels.

Of a greater number of biochemical tests in hepatobiliary diseases by means of methematico-statistical methods (calculation of specificity and sensitiveness, variance analysis, discrimination analysis with following discrimination experiments) the parameters should be established which in a step programme with multivariate observation and non-discriminated approach give the best possible information. The recognition of patients with liver diseases (preliminary diagnostics) is at nearly 94% possible with a scale comprising GOT, AAP, some relevant clinical data (touch findings, jaundice, hepatic skin signs) and the hepatitis B-antigen. In non-discriminated approach according to our findings the following scale should not be trangressed:
GPT
, GOT (compare preliminary diagnostics),
LAP
, AP, AAP (compare preliminary diagnostics), cholesterol, TTT, bilirubin, beta-GC. As to aimed questionings the bromsulphalein test belongs to the enlarged basic scale.

In the present paper is reported on the behavior of different serochemical parameters in heterologous perfusion of the liver of pigs. The perfusion of the animal livers was carried out with preserved human blood in 11 recirculation experiments (closed machine circulations). In addition to this an empty circulation with human blood without attachment to an animal liver was carried out, whereby otherwise the arrangement of the experiment was the same, in order to take into consideration the effects of the blood traumatisation in the interpretation of the results. The enzymes GOT and
LAP
proved as sensible indicators of the lesion of the liver cells occurring in the perfusion of the liver of the pigs. The behavior of the mitochondrial GDH as well as of the lysosomal enzymes SP and BETA-GC which scarcely increased during the recirculations in the perfusate blood, however, allows the conclusion that there did not appear a severe lesion of the liver cells (necrobiosis) during several hours of perfusion. A cholestasis did not develop during the perfusions, when one takes as basis the behavior of the enzymes AP, GGTP and AAP indicating cholestasis. Compared with GOT the enzyme
GPT
showed by far less elevations in the perfusate blood so that with increasing duration of the perfusion the De-Ritis-quotient significantly increased. Increased LDH-activities above all revealed the increasing during perfusion haemolysis and less reliably a lesion of the liver of the pig. The increase of ADA in the perfusate blood proved as nearly exclusively conditioned by haemolysis. Total protein, albumins, immunoglobulins, cholinesterase and thymol turbidity test remained unchanged in the course of the perfusions.

In order to determine the validity of clinical-chemical parameters for the prognosis of hepatic failure, 28 pigs were subjected to liver ischemia for 40--160 minutes duration. The following parameters were studied: GOT,
GPT
, gamma-GT,
LAP
, LDH, GlDH, AP and isoenzymes, total bilirubin, potassium, sodium and chloride. In a statistical comparison in the surviving animals, an unexplainable increase in GlDH activity was observed. In the other clinical-chemical parameters none was seen to be of use for the prognosis for either life or death in acute hepatic failure.

A description is given of an outbreak of equine infectious anaemia (E.I.A.) in Campania [at Naples and Aversa (Caserta)]; it was diagnosed by clinical, pathological and serological examinations (Coggins test). Using the serum of 45 horses with E.I.A. and 11 healthy horses (controls), numerous investigations were carried out on: enzymes, intrinsic coagulation factors, lipids and other substances. The results obtained were very interesting and show that in this disease there are significant increases in many enzymes (LDH,
LAP
, gamma-GT, CPK, PK and ALD) and copper. Insignificant increases were found in other enzymes (SDH, GLDH, MDH, ICDH, AIP, lysozyme, cholinesterase, GOT and
GPT
) and also intrinsic coagulation factors, lipid substances (total cholesterol, esterified cholesterol, triglycerides) and glucose. LDH-1-isoenzyme remains unchanged, whilst AcP decreases slightly.

Serum GOT,
GPT
, LDH, CHE, MDH, SDH, PK, GLDM,
LAP
and amylase levels and serum ammonia were determined in 49 major burn cases with 2nd and 3rd degree lesions covering 25% to 80% of the body surface. GOT,
GPT
, LDH, CHE and gamma-GT have above normal in all cases. Limited and inconsistent movements were noted for the remaining enzymes. Blood ammonia was constantly increased and it is felt that the enzyme picture may be of considerable prognostic value in major burn cases.

Nonvaccinated pigs were infected with a pathogenic virus of swine fever in order to follow up the changes with some enzymes in their blood serum. It was found that there is a dependable rise in the values of the blood serum GOT (2.6.1. 1.) - From about 38 to approximately 108 mU per cu. cm;
GPT
(2. 6; 1.2.;-From about 12 up to 66 mU/cu. cm;
LAP
(3. 4. 1. 1)-from about 13 to 27 mU/cu. cm; and ALD (4. 1; 2. 7.) - from about 6 up to 19 mU/cu. cm. These changes were noticed as early as the 48th hour of infection, prior to the manifestation of the clinical symptoms of swine fever. They remained stable up to the end of the infection process. The activity of LDH (1. 1. 2. 7.) and amylase (3. 2. 1.1 .) was said to rise (not dependable statistically), and that of cholinesterase (3. 1 1. 8) - to drop gradually with the development of the infection process. The two phosphomonoesterases (3. 1. 3. 1 and 3. 1. 3. 2.) showed no essential changes. The changes taking place in the activity of these enzymes did not depend on the extent of the hemorrhagic diathesis characteristic of swine fever. So, this test, which has been unknown so far, is referred to as a characteristic paraclinical symptom of swine fever.

The toxic effects of bis (tributyltin) oxide (TBTO) on the rat liver were studied with an electron microscope and the accumulation sites of tin were determined with an X-ray microanalyzer. The activities of serum enzymes and the concentration of serum bilirubin were also analyzed. Male Wistar rats received an intramuscular injection of 0.5 ml/kg of TBTO. Marked swelling of the mitochondria appeared in the hepatocytes 4 h after injection of TBTO. Cytoplasmic vacuoles, which contained degenerated mitochondria, gradually increased in number in these hepatocytes. This in turn may have caused a decrease in the volume of hepatic cell cords and an enlargement of sinusoids in the entire hepatic lobule. However, fine structures of intrahepatic bile ducts were not altered. By X-ray microanalysis, tin peaks were preferentially obtained from swollen mitochondria of the hepatocytes. By polarographic analysis of the respiratory responses of mitochondria, it was demonstrated that rates of state 4 respiration and respiratory control ratio were significantly disturbed in TBTO-treated rats in comparison with those of controls. The activities of AST (aspartate aminotransferase) and
ALT
(
alanine aminotransferase
) were significantly increased after TBTO treatment, but those of ALP (alkaline phosphatase),
LAP
(leucine aminopeptidase) and total bilirubin were not changed. These results indicated that parenterally administered TBTO accumulated in the liver cell mitochondria and disturbed oxidative phosphorylation. Mitochondrial dysfunction might induce severe damage of the hepatocytes. Four days after injection of TBTO, hepatic structures and chemical indices were almost restored by the regeneration of hepatocytes.

The effectiveness and the safety of panipenem/betamipron, new antibiotics of the carbapenems for burn infections, were studied and the following results were obtained: 1. The preparation, 0.5 g/0.5 g, was administered by intravenous drip infusion twice a day to 11 cases of patients with burn infections. In 10 cases for which clinical effects were evaluable, results were rated as "excellent" in 2 cases, "good" in 2 cases and "fair" in 6 cases, with an efficacy rate of 40%. 2. Penetration to the affected tissue was studied in 2 cases. The tissue level of panipenem was 0.20 micrograms/g immediately after the end of drip infusion and 6.86 micrograms/g 60 minutes thereafter. 3. As for the safety, a slight increase in GOT,
GPT
and Al-P was noted in 1 case; a slight increase in
GPT
, NAG and beta 2MG was found in 1 case; and a slight increase in GOT,
GPT
, Al-P and
LAP
was noted in 1 case, as abnormal variations in laboratory test results.

1. Analysis of biochemical parameters were carried out on material pooled from 30 female sheep (Ovis aries ligeriensis). 2. The values determined were for the common metabolites and enzymes utilized for specific studies in general metabolism (urea, glucose, cholesterol, lipids, bilirubin, uric acid, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase, GOT,
GPT
, LDH,
LAP
, CGT, CK and amylase). 3. Results of these studies were compared with values from normal human adults. 4. The differences obtained in human and sheep ranges can be explained by the different physiology of the two species. 5. This study gives values for the sheep as an experimental animal in biomedical research.
