Certain biochemical serum parameters: GOT,
GPT
, LAP, HK, AP and Regan isoenzyme, GGTP, CE, ESR, Weltman test,
thymol
test, serum bilirubin and urine urobilogen were determined in 39 patients with different localization of malignant processes in the abdominal cavity (stomach, large intestines, pancreas, ovaries). The patients were subdivided into two groups, depending on the presence or absence of liver metastases, confirmed at laparatomy, laparascopy or necropsy material examination. The results revealed that in patients with liver metastases AP, CE, GOT, GGTP, ESR and Weltman test are most commonly and simultaneously abnormal. In patients without liver metastases, those indices are also changed but to a lesser degree, whereas LAP and Regan isoenyzme are with elevated activity in a higher per cent of these cases, than in the patients with liver metastases, being in unison with literature data. The determination of the above biochemical parameters could direct the clinicist to the presence of liver metastases but the more reliable diagnostic methods as laparascopy and laparatomy cannot be substituted for.

The effects of two sequential therapies using mestranol as an estrogen and chlormadinone acetate and norethisterone acetate, respectively, as a gestagen on the aminotransferase (GOT and
GPT
), alkaline phosphatase and alpha-amylase activities, the cholesterol, total bilirubin and total protein contents and the indocyanine green (Ujoviridin, VEB Chemiekombinat Bitterfeld) half-life were studied in two groups, each comprising 12 women of fertile age. The serum protein was separated by paper electrophoresis and both the
thymol
turbidity and zinc sulphate tests were performed during the first treatment cycle. An estrogen-induced rise in
alanine aminotransferase
(
GPT
) activity from 6.31 U/liter to 12.14 U/liter was observed during application of the mestranol/chlormadinone acetate therapy. The value dropped to 5.34 U/liter when chlormadinone acetate was administered as a gestagen in addition to the estrogen. No significant changes were noted in the other biochemical parameters. Sequential therapy involving application of mestranol and norethisterone acetate produced only statistically secured rises in the alpha 1-globulin content and the
GPT
activity. All other changes in the different parameters remained within the normal range and were statistically insignificant.

In the present paper is reported on the behavior of different serochemical parameters in heterologous perfusion of the liver of pigs. The perfusion of the animal livers was carried out with preserved human blood in 11 recirculation experiments (closed machine circulations). In addition to this an empty circulation with human blood without attachment to an animal liver was carried out, whereby otherwise the arrangement of the experiment was the same, in order to take into consideration the effects of the blood traumatisation in the interpretation of the results. The enzymes GOT and LAP proved as sensible indicators of the lesion of the liver cells occurring in the perfusion of the liver of the pigs. The behavior of the mitochondrial GDH as well as of the lysosomal enzymes SP and BETA-GC which scarcely increased during the recirculations in the perfusate blood, however, allows the conclusion that there did not appear a severe lesion of the liver cells (necrobiosis) during several hours of perfusion. A cholestasis did not develop during the perfusions, when one takes as basis the behavior of the enzymes AP, GGTP and AAP indicating cholestasis. Compared with GOT the enzyme
GPT
showed by far less elevations in the perfusate blood so that with increasing duration of the perfusion the De-Ritis-quotient significantly increased. Increased LDH-activities above all revealed the increasing during perfusion haemolysis and less reliably a lesion of the liver of the pig. The increase of ADA in the perfusate blood proved as nearly exclusively conditioned by haemolysis. Total protein, albumins, immunoglobulins, cholinesterase and
thymol
turbidity test remained unchanged in the course of the perfusions.

47 patients with chronic aggressive hepatitis were immunosuppressively treated on the average 33.8 months (daily dose 100 mg azathioprine and 10 mg prednisolone). The serochemical parameters
thymol
, ZnSO4, GOT and
GPT
statistically significantly improved themselves. In 36 patients bioptic controls in 61.1% resulted in an improvement, and in 27.8% of the cases they resulted in a constancy of the histological findings. 10.6% of the patients died of a liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension. Nearly half the patients is capable to work. No severe side-effects appeared. The present results correspond to the results mentioned in literature. The chronic aggressive hepatitis, furthermore, should be added to a prednisone monotherapy or to a combination therapy of azathioprine and prednisone.

Current notions on the role of the
thymol
test (TT) in the diagnosis of viral hepatitis A are discussed. Changes in TT results over the course of the disease are presented, starting from the incubation period up to the second-third week; these values are compared to those of hepatitis A specific markers. The earliest TT shifts in hepatitis A are detectable already 15-18 days before the first clinical manifestations, when this parameter surpasses the upper threshold of the range of normal values. The incubation period TT values are 6.9-8.4 U S-H, those during the 3 weeks of the acute period are 9.1-9.7 U S-H. This test earlier reacts to liver inflammation than
alanine aminotransferase
(a hepatic enzyme) measurement, which fact recommends TT for active early detection of hepatitis A patients in epidemic foci in collective bodies. One more TT advantage over the detection of hepatitis A specific markers in epidemic foci is that it permits the diagnosis of hepatitis whatever its etiology.

Blood serum free vitamin B12, bilirubin,
alanine aminotransferase
levels were measured and
thymol
test made in 168 patients with viral hepatitis A, 13 with chronic hepatitis, 8 with mechanical jaundice of neoplastic origin, 7 with calculous cholecystitis, and 8 with functional hyperbilirubinemia by the microbiologic methods. Elevated blood serum levels of free vitamin B12, conforming to the disease severity and stage, were revealed in the patients with viral hepatitis A, chronic active hepatitis, and mechanical jaundice of a neoplastic origin with liver involvement. Correlations between cobalaminemia and other functional liver tests were observed. Therefore blood serum vitamin B12 measurements may be used for the assessment of the disease activity and severity of liver parenchyma injury.

Health examinations of 108 workers exposed to vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) at a Japanese chemical plant were carried out in 1979. The polymerization of vinyl chloride was started at the plant in 1949. In this study, the highest concentration of VCM in autoclaves was determined to be 250 ppm in 1961. However, the workers at the plant had been exposed to higher concentrations of VCM several times before 1960. More recent VCM exposure was considered negligible. Examinations assessed data on age, height, weight, obesity index, sake consumption, VCM exposure concentration, latent period, cumulative exposure, ICG (indocyano green test), serum bilirubin, GOT (glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase),
GPT
(glutamic pyruvic transaminase), A1-P (alkaline phosphatase), GGT(gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase), ZTT (zinc turbidity test), LDH (lactate dehydrogenase), cholesterol, TTT (
thymol
turbidity test), A/G (albumin globulin ratio), and thrombocytes. Variation in VCM exposure did not affect tests of pigment excretion from the liver, such as ICG; thrombocytes; and enzyme activity (such as
GPT
); nor bilirubin or flocculation reaction in serum.

The effects of protein supply and 1-carnitine were recorded in a group of junior elite cyclists by a prospective double blind placebo controlled trial for six weeks (Refit milk powder containing about 90% proteins and 5% mineral salts-Ca, P, K, Na and 1-carnitine tablets). Seven top junior cyclists received orally 1 g protein/kg.d as supplement of food for six weeks and 2 g 1-carnitine, also orally, per day, 10 days before an important competition; other 7 cyclists received the same regimen as placebo. Significant and favourable changes were recorded in the treated group for the strength index, lean body mass, fat mass, TWP (total work-kgm, performed on cycloergometer 1', serum proteins, serum Hb, serum calcium) changes which did not appear in the control group. Serum cholesterol, creatinine,
thymol
test and serum
GPT
did not change significantly in either group. All athletes were under medical supervision, had a controlled training programme and food and received daily only vitamins and mineral salts. The treated group supported better the stress-induced efforts and obtained higher performances in the international competition which took place at the end of the experiment. Based on these data the authors recommend a supply of protein ratio up to 3.2 g/kg.d, six weeks before competition and 2 g 1-carnitine daily, also orally, 10 to 14 days before competition, including the day of competition, for cyclists, in order to improve the biological potential of the body.

The influence of hemosorption in multimodality therapy of 71 patients with chronic liver diseases was studied. Together with clinical improvement of the health status hemosorption was followed by a decrease in the concentration of bilirubin, cholesterol and gamma-globulins,
ALT
activity, the level of the
thymol
test, IgA, IgG and CIC. The content of T-lymphocytes and their subpopulation changed very little. Hemosorption efficacy was more marked in chronic active hepatitis and at initial stages of biliary cirrhosis than at the dystrophic stage of biliary cirrhosis. The use of hemosorption in multimodality therapy of patients with chronic liver diseases contributed to faster clinical improvement, return of biochemical and immunological indices to normal.

The effect of essential oils, eugenol,
thymol
and menthol, on erythrocytes, hepatocytes, dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC)-liposomes and surface tension were studied at various concentrations. Maximal inhibition of eugenol,
thymol
and menthol on the hypotonic hemolysis in rat erythrocytes were observed at a concentration of 2 mM, 1 mM and 1 mM, respectively. Eugenol at 4 mM and
thymol
at 2 mM caused an acceleration of hypotonic hemolysis. In isolated rat hepatocytes,
thymol
caused an increase in GOT leakage, but eugenol at 4 mM and menthol at 0.1 and 0.4 mM inhibited the GOT leakage. The leakage of
GPT
from hepatocytes was inhibited by eugenol at 0.1 mM and 0.4 to 4 mM and menthol at 0.1 to 0.6 mM. The inhibition of eugenol and menthol on the LDH leakage in hepatocytes were observed at a concentration of 0.001 to 4 mM and 0.1, 0.4 and 0.6 mM, respectively.
Thymol
caused no change in
GPT
and LDH leakage. Eugenol,
thymol
and menthol indicated a depression of surface tension at a concentration of 0.1 mM. The rank by order of surface activity was eugenol greater than
thymol
. Eugenol,
thymol
and menthol depressed the phase-transition temperature of DPPC-liposomes. The depression of phase-transition temperature by
thymol
was greater than that by eugenol and menthol. These results suggest the periapical tissue damage produced by essential oils may be related to membrane lysis and surface activity and that their tissue penetration may be related to membrane affinity and lipid solubility.
