For 70 days two groups of 10-week gilts were given feed supplemented with PCB commercial mixture of Czechoslovak make (Delor 105), at the doses of 10 and 50 mg. .kg-1 of feed. Over the experimental period, animals were administered 1000 mg or 5000 mg of PCB mixture. During the experimental period the levels of glucose, cholesterol, urea, total protein, vitamin A, calcium, inorganic

and the activities of AF,
ALT
and AST enzymes were determined twice. At the end of this experiment the aniline hydroxylase activity in microsomal fractions of liver was determined and pronounced induction effect of PCB on the enzymatic system was observed. Out of the studied metabolic parameters of blood plasma, the decrease in vitamin A level was significant.

Polyethylene glycol-6000 (PEG) was evaluated as a clearing agent for lipemic serum from dogs. Effects of PEG-treatment in lipemic and non-lipemic samples were determined for 13 chemical and enzymatic assays (glucose, BUN,
alanine aminotransferase
, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, amylase, total protein, albumin, sodium, potassium, chloride,

, and calcium). Control samples for lipemic sera were prepared by ultracentrifugation. Treatment with PEG cleared all lipemic samples. Regression lines for all lipemic samples were highly significant (P less than 0.0001) and the SD of the control values around the regression lines were small compared with the mean value for an assay. The technique was simple, quick, and inexpensive. With proper validation, reliable predictions of true serum values could be calculated for lipemic serum samples for all assays studied.

enzymes as well as the activity of lactic acid dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, aldolase, and leucine aminopeptidase. Studied were the body temperature, the pulse rate, and the respiration rate. It was found that on farms with ketosis in cows ketonuria was manifested most often after the ketone bodies in the blood rose to 10-12 mg%. At the same time the blood sugar level was lowered and as a rule it showed reverse correlation with the levels of ketonemia and ketonuria. In such cows there was a lowering trend with the Ca and carotene contents and the erythrocyte count, and the respiration rate was higher. There were no changes in the body temperature, pulse rate, leukocyte count, Ca, Mg, hemoglobin, protein, and the activity of aldolase. The activity of the other enzymes mentioned was higher, and it correlated positively with the rise of ketonemia and ketonuria. With diseased cows the activity of alkaline phosphatase only was shown to be lower, negatively correlating with ketonuria.

Changes in concentrations of blood lead, cholesterol, triacylglycerols, GOT and

enzymes,

, proteins, plasma calcium and magnesium, and erythrocyte magnesium were studied for 25 weeks in 4 groups of 6 rabbits each receiving different diets: I (controls), II (water with 9.66 mumol/l of lead), III (atherogenic) and IV (atherogenic + 9.66 mumol/l of lead). Differences observed, with respect to the diets, for lead, cholesterol, enzymes, proteins and erythrocyte magnesium were evident from the 42nd day on. Low lead doses raised the levels of cholesterol and triacylglycerols in group II, whereas triacylglycerols were lower in the plasma of group IV in comparison with group III and were accumulated in the aorta. The elevation of enzymes in groups III and IV indicated heart and liver dysfunctions. There was a significant drop in erythrocyte magnesium in groups III and IV, which was especially marked in the latter group, with an interaction between the two diets.

Single oral doses of N-nitrosodimethylamine or olive oil were given to nonpregnant and pregnant female Holtzman rats on different days of pregnancy (days 7-18, where day 0 was considered to be the sperm positive day). Serological and histopathological studies were performed on animals killed 2 days after treatment. In comparison with the values obtained in nonpregnant controls, the following parameters in pregnant controls were significantly increased: relative liver weights (days 9-20), liver ascorbic acid concentrations (day 12), blood urea nitrogen (days 16-20), serum triglyceride (days 14-20), serum inorganic
phosphorus
(days 12-18), and serum
glutamic-pyruvic transaminase
(days 14-20). The following parameters were decreased in pregnant rats compared with nonpregnant controls: relative organ weights (kidneys, adrenals and thyroids), serum glucose (days 12-20), total serum protein (days 9 and 16-20), and serum alkaline phosphatase (day 20). The serum cholesterol levels in pregnant rats were significantly decreased on days 9-15 of pregnancy and significantly increased on day 20. The numbers of mitotic cells in the livers of pregnant rats were greatly increased compared with nonpregnant rats on all days of pregnancy, while the adrenal cortex contained a significantly higher number of mitotic cells only on days 16 and 18. . NDMA treatment decreased liver ascorbic acid and total serum protein in both pregnant and nonpregnant rats. In nonpregnant rats NDMA also increased relative liver weights (not significant) and serum alkaline phosphatase levels. NDMA increased serum alpha-hydroxybutyric dehydrogenase in pregnant rats on day 20 and decreased foetal weights (in rats treated on days 13 and 18). NDMA treatment was not lethal to nonpregnant rats or to pregnant rats up to day 16 of pregnancy, but single oral doses of 15 and 20 mg NDMA/kg killed 9.4 and 35.3%, respectively, of rats treated on day 18 of pregnancy. In general, the acute toxic effect of NDMA, as measured by changes in the above parameters, was greater in pregnant than in nonpregnant rats, especially near the end of pregnancy.

, and chlorides, complete prameters of the acid-base balance of the blood, and the values of glucose, urea, lactic acid, and creatinin. For determining these standards, dogs were selected at the age of 6.5 months to 7 years. All the statistically processed results are obtained from a number of animals which would secure 95% reliability and accuracy of the results, which would allow for sufficient generalization. Differences concerning the influence of age were not demonstrated in any of the determined biochemical values. The results are regarded as representative standards which can be used for clinical and laboratory diagnostics and prognostics in veterinary cynology and for clinical physiology of the German Shepherd dog breed.

Gentamicin sulfate at dosage levels of 10 and 20 mg/kg of body weight was administered twice daily IV to red-tailed hawks. Clinical signs, water consumption, and changes in blood chemical values were monitored. Tissues were examined grossly and ultrastructurally, using light and electron microscopy.
