Humans risk inadvertent intraperitoneal or intravenous exposure to formaldehyde (HCHO), commonly used for disinfection of implanted or extracorporeal medical devices. Various chemical and physical stresses are known to induce hepatic metallothionein. This study examined the effect of acute parenteral administration of HCHO on induction of hepatic metallothionein synthesis. Adult male CF1 mice were administered HCHO ip and hepatic metallothionein was quantified by the cadmium-radioassay method. HCHO (50 mg/kg) increased hepatic metallothionein as early as 8 hr after dosing with maximal levels (27-fold increase) occurring at 72 hr. Metallothionein concentrations were elevated (15-fold) 24 hr after 50 or 100 mg HCHO/kg but not at lower dosages. Concomitant elevations in hepatic
zinc
and copper content were observed. No increases in metallothionein were observed in kidney, pancreas, or intestine 24 hr after HCHO administration (100 mg/kg, ip). Induction of metallothionein by HCHO may reflect direct de novo synthesis since the response was abolished by pretreatment with the RNA synthesis inhibitor, actinomycin D. HCHO induction of metallothionein also does not appear to be mediated by stress-induced release of corticosteroids or catecholamines from the adrenal since the response was unaltered in adrenalectomized mice. Interference with the glutathione (GSH)-dependent oxidation of HCHO by reducing hepatic GSH concentrations to 40% of control after a 2-hr pretreatment with phorone decreased the metallothionein induction response to HCHO by 33%. This result suggests that the induction may be partially due to a HCHO metabolite, e.g., formate. Confirmation of metallothionein synthesis was obtained following spectral and chromatographic analysis. Thus, HCHO and/or a metabolite produces a marked increase in hepatic metallothionein and alters hepatic
zinc
and copper homeostasis, all of which are transient responses. Although HCHO was only mildly hepatotoxic at the highest dose (as evidenced by an increase in plasma
alanine aminotransferase
activity), such changes in metallothionein synthesis and essential metal homeostasis may be part of a cellular repair mechanism operant after acute toxic cell injury.

A comparative trial was conducted with the oral administration of
zinc
sulphate to pregnant cows and heifers aimed at influencing the selected metabolic parameters in the dam-calf line. The total daily ZnSO4.7H2O dose of 3 g (680 mg Zn++) was given to dry standing cows and heifers for 35 days on an average (15-65) before the expected date of calving. The breeding conditions in the stock were problematic: losses of calves suffered in the last half-a-year period were higher than 30% of born calves; the main causes of this high mortality were coli-septicaemia and coli-enteritis. As compared with the eight control animals, the experimental cows and heifers (12 head) exhibited a transient increase in zincaemia, followed by a tendency to proteinaemia; aspartate aminotransferase activity increased, total immunoglobulins remained unchanged, and decreases were recorded in the activities of
alanine aminotransferase
, alkaline phosphatase, creatine phosphokinase and aldolase. On the other hand, the concentration of total bilirubin tended to increase. In 77% of the cows and first-calvers of the experimental group the quality of colostrum complied with the standard; in the case of the control animals this proportion was 83%. Significant zincaemia occurred in the calves of the experimental cows between the first and 14th day of their age; no differences from the control calves were recorded in immunoglobulinaemia, proteinaemia, albuminaemia and in the activities of
alanine aminotransferase
and creatine phosphokinase. On the other hand, aspartate aminotransferase activity tended to grow and alkaline phosphatase activity tended to sink. Neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia disappeared within the first 14 days of age in both the experimental and the control calves. The results failed to show clearly that the intention to increase the values of the studied parameters of immunopoiesis was met.

Three hundred and seventy-three female and 213 male nonalcoholic subjects, aged 60-100 y, who had participated in a nutritional status survey of elderly people in the Boston area were grouped according to usual alcohol intake: 0-4, 5-14, or 15+ g/d. The age- and sex-adjusted mean intake of calories, fat, protein, carbohydrate, and 10 micronutrients and the mean levels of 14 nutrient and 22 nonnutrient biochemical indices were compared for the three categories of alcohol intake. The mean micronutrient intakes were also adjusted for total caloric intake and the mean nutrient biochemical concentrations were also adjusted for the corresponding nutrient intakes. Metabolic and hormonal responses of eight adult male collared peccaries (Tayassu tajacu) to an ad libitum diet intake, or 25% of an ad libitum intake, were examined. Blood samples for hematological, serum-biochemical and hormonal profiles were collected at three week intervals during the nine week experiment starting 4 August 1983. Males fed on the restricted diet lost an average of 26% of their body weight during the trial, compared to a slight weight gain for those fed ad libitum. Characteristics of the red and white blood cell populations were not influenced by diet intake, with the exception of mean corpuscular volume, which was consistently lower amongst males fed on the restricted diet. Restricted food intake resulted in significantly elevated serum values for urea nitrogen, urea nitrogen:creatinine, urea index, alpha globulin:beta globulin, gamma globulin:albumin, nonesterified fatty acids, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase isozymes (LD1 and LD2). Restricted food intake resulted in significantly lowered serum values for total alpha globulin, alpha-1 globulin, total beta globulin, beta-1 globulin, beta-2 globulin, glucose, triglycerides, calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, copper and triiodothyronine. These data suggest male libido might be depressed during poor range conditions, while maintenance of spermatogenesis might permit them to take immediate advantage of improved range conditions. Blood analysis of metabolic and hormonal function can provide useful information for predicting the adult male's nutritional and reproductive condition.

Health examinations of 108 workers exposed to vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) at a Japanese chemical plant were carried out in 1979. The polymerization of vinyl chloride was started at the plant in 1949. In this study, the highest concentration of VCM in autoclaves was determined to be 250 ppm in 1961. However, the workers at the plant had been exposed to higher concentrations of VCM several times before 1960. More recent VCM exposure was considered negligible. . These animals were fed a standardized diet. At 6 months of age their weight increased progressively to 12 kg. Several factors of variation have been studied; time of blood sampling age of animals. We obtained the following results: values of bilirubin, CK and TGO were always lower at 8 a.m. than 12 a.m. and 6 p.m. The effects of age were variable. They are no variation in the values of only 4 parameters (calcium, sodium, potassium and triglycerides), while the others constituents were increased or decreased. Liver injury was induced by one subcutaneous administration of thioacetamide (200 mg/kg b.wt.) and studied 24 and 48 hrs later. Levels of aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) and
alanine aminotransferase
(ALAT) increased after 24 and 48 hrs. The lysosomal enzymes beta-hexosaminidase (beta-NAG) and beta-glucuronidase (beta-GLU) increased significantly after 24 hrs, while the level of beta-GLU returned to normal after 48 hrs, but the activity of beta-NAG remained significantly high even after 48 hrs. Partial ileal bypass (PIB) surgery is a method for the treatment of familial hypercholesterolaemia in man. Since the rabbit is frequently used as an animal model in experimental studies on PIB, we have investigated the long-term effects of this surgical procedure on the health status of rabbits. Forty-eight weeks after surgery plasma and liver cholesterol levels were decreased by about 40%. The inner diameter of the bypassed ileum was drastically reduced, unlike its length. The bypassed segment did not show clear histological abnormalities. The microflora of the caecum was similar in control and PIB rabbits. PIB did not influence liver histology. The bile of the rabbits with PIB was less lithogenic than that of control animals. Blood haemoglobin levels, haematocrit values and plasma concentrations of alkaline phosphatase,
alanine aminotransferase
, gamma-glutamyl transferase and lactate dehydrogenase were not changed after PIB. Plasma levels of albumin, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin B12 and folic acid were not significantly affected by PIB. Rabbits with PIB had significantly higher plasma levels of bilirubin and

, and frequently, hypercholesterolemia. Lymphocyte blastogenic responses were decreased and there was dysgammaglobulinemia in pups in which quantitative studies of immunoglobulins were made. The mean of plasma

concentrations in 5 affected pups was significantly lower than the mean of age- and breed-matched controls. Pathologic findings included parakeratosis, hyperkeratosis, and superficial bacterial infections of the skin. There was severe reduction of lymphocytes in T-lymphocyte areas of lymphoid tissue. Bronchopneumonia and dilatation of the cerebral ventricles were found in most affected pups. Family studies indicated that the syndrome is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. In spite of its similarities to lethal trait A46 in Black Pied Danish cattle and acrodermatitis enteropathica in man, oral or parenteral treatment with
