A ketamine hydrochloride/xylazine combination was found effective for immobilizing springbok. Following intramuscular injection by hand, the onset of immobilization ranged from 3 to 10 minutes and duration of immobilization ranged from 1 hour to 2 hours 20 minutes. Hematologic and serum chemical values before and after immobilization were compared. Serum

Amino acids showed remarkable increase in 3-methylhistidine and beta-amino-isobutyric acid and moderate increase in phenylalanine and arginine. These results revealed that measurement of free amino acid concentration, especially that of methylhistidine as well as myoglobin, pyruvate, lactate and some other enzymes might be of great help to predict the prognosis of patients with acute arterial occlusion of the extremities.

, and calcium. The resulting data were coded and subsequently processed in an IBM 370 computer, and the reference values (3rd and 97th percentiles) were defined for each analyte. The animals examined were 30 sows after eleven or more farrowings (pluriparous sows) and 26 primiparous sows. Values of serum biochemistry were obtained for 33 adult (16 male and 17 female) and six juvenile (four male and two female) collared peccaries collected by trapping and drugging animals from southern Texas during the period July through September 1982. Only cholesterol and aspartate aminotransferase concentrations differed significantly with respect to sex. Juvenile peccaries had significantly lower concentrations of total protein and globulins, but had higher concentrations of glucose, triglycerides, alkaline phosphatase,

Twenty-six parameters of clinical biochemical properties were determined in 72 clinically healthy German Shepherd dogs. The standard values were determined for total protein, protein spectrum, albuminoglobulin quotient, enzymic activities for AST,

, magnesium, calcium, inorganic phosphorus, and chlorides, complete prameters of the acid-base balance of the blood, and the values of glucose, urea, lactic acid, and creatinin. For determining these standards, dogs were selected at the age of 6.5 months to 7 years. All the statistically processed results are obtained from a number of animals which would secure 95% reliability and accuracy of the results, which would allow for sufficient generalization. Differences concerning the influence of age were not demonstrated in any of the determined biochemical values. The results are regarded as representative standards which can be used for clinical and laboratory diagnostics and prognostics in veterinary cynology and for clinical physiology of the German Shepherd dog breed.

Animal experiments conducted in the late 1960s and early 1970s in various institutes of China showed that the effective antifertility agent in crude cottonseed oil was gossypol. Gossypol is a yellow substance which occurs in various parts of the cotton plant; its chemical structure is naphthol phenol. At the Capital Hospital gossypol was tested on 172 volunteers selected from hospital employees and workers from a nearby factory. All of the volunteers were under age 50, married and healthy with at least 1 child. Examinations required before treatment were general physical examination, a blood and urine analysis, an electrocardiogram, serum
potassium
concentration and serum analysis. 2 stages of gossypol treatment were required in the clinical study: the initial stage, the loading period, is of about 60 days. A daily dose of 20 mg gossypol was given successively for 60 days causing the sperms to become immotile, reduced in number or totally absent. A sperm count below 4 million/ml semen was considered to indicate infertility. The dosage in the 2nd stage, the maintenance period, was reduced to 1/3 of the original dose to maintain infertility. The volunteers were followed up every 2-3 months. Fatigue, decrease of libido and impaired appetite were the 3 main complaints. Serum

(SGPT) activities showed that the transient symptoms of fatigue and loss of appetite were not related to disturbance of liver function. The mechanism of hypokalemia induced by gossypol is probably of renal origin. Infertility induced by gossypol in contraceptive doses over a relatively short period of administration was reversed about 3 months after stopping treatment. Gossypol used as a male antifertility agent has been found to be very effective and relatively safe.
