Oral bropirimine (an immunomodulator shown to induce interferon) was administered to timed-pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats in five experiments utilizing several different dosing schedules. Concentrations of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg of bropirimine were used. Interferon levels were determined in maternal serum, spleen, and whole embryo extracts and uterine contents were evaluated for survival of the embryos. Maternal toxicity occurred in all experiments as evidenced by dose-related decreases in body weight during the first 24 hr postdosing. Hematoxicology analyses of maternal serum revealed significant decreases in urea nitrogen,

, and albumin, along with increases in aspartate transaminase,
alanine transaminase
, and total bilirubin, in bropirimine-treated dams as compared to the vehicle controls. In addition, the means for maternal thymus weight decreased while the means for spleen weight increased with increasing concentration of bropirimine. As compared to the vehicle controls, interferon titers were high in maternal serum, maternal spleen, and, to a lesser extent, whole embryos, 2 hr postdosing, but had decreased or were below detectable levels 24 hr postdosing. Embryolethality was pronounced (increases in pre- and postimplantational loss) after a single dose (Gestation Day 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, or 10) of bropirimine, as well as after 7 or 8 consecutive days (Gestation Days 6-12 or 6-13) of treatment. Although embryotoxicity never occurred in these experiments in the absence of pronounced maternal toxicity, the pregnant dams never died as the result of bropirimine treatment, whereas the embryos frequently failed to survive.

Serum osmolalities and osmolar gap were determined in 43 normal healthy beagles (control group) and 40 dogs with dirofilarial hemoglobinuria (hemoglobinuria group). In the control group, the measured and calculated serum osmolality levels were in the means of 296 +/- 5 (SD) mOsm/kg and 293 +/- 6 mOsm/kg respectively, showing an osmolar gap less than 10 mOsm/kg. In the hemoglobinuria group, the measured serum osmolality ranged from 272 to 370 mOsm/kg. A considerable number of dogs had normal serum osmolalities in spite of severe intravascular hemolysis, suggesting that the changes in serum osmolality would not be the direct cause of intravascular hemolysis. The measured serum osmolality (331 +/- 28 mOsm/kg) was significantly higher in 11 dogs which died after a surgical removal heartworms than in 29 dogs which recovered after the removal (302 +/- 17 mOsm/kg). The calculated serum osmolality level was 296 +/- 16 mOsm/kg in 24 recovered cases, and 304 +/- 22 mOsm/kg in 10 fatal cases. The osmolar gap stayed in the normal ranges of 5.4 +/- 5.9 mOsm/kg in recovered cases, but it attained a higher level of 22.7 +/- 8.9 mOsm/kg in fatal cases, suggesting poor prognosis in cases with large osmolar gaps. The results from an external quality control of dry-chemistry instruments are presented. The performance with regard to imprecision was good. With regard to accuracy, the performance was poor for aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, triglycerides and uric acid. The inaccuracy of

was comparable to that obtained by hospital instruments using wet chemistry. There were no large differences with respect to quality between Seralyzer and Reflotron. However, Seralyzer users performed more analyses per week, analysed a higher number of constituents and had more experienced operators than the Reflotron users. Reflotron users more often analysed the sample in connection with the consultation. The importance of an established quality control programme for these instruments is underlined.

A 6-year-old girl with cerebral palsy developed conscious disturbance and generalized convulsion after one-hour hot herb drug bath. Condition didn't improve. Afterwards cardiopulmonary arrest developed. Patient expired 8 hours after admission despite of resuscitation. Heat stroke in infancy and childhood is different from that in adulthood. The predisposing factors are high ambient temperature, dehydration, very young baby, sweat gland dysfunction, or ectodermal dysplasia. After racing 722 m, 16 Greyhounds were evaluated to determine changes in hematologic, biochemical, blood-gas, and acid-base values following exercise. Values were determined before racing (T0), immediately after racing (T1), and 3 hours after racing (T2). Significant changes detected immediately after racing included increased heart rate, respiratory rate, and rectal temperature. Significant changes in hematologic values included increases in PCV, total plasma protein, hemoglobin, RBC, WBC, neutrophils, and lymphocytes. Change was not detected in values for monocytes, eosinophils, and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio. Other increases included those for plasma concentrations of sodium, chloride, calcium, lactic acid, aspartate transaminase,

Three hours after exercise, all vital signs and blood-gas and acid-base values, except for PaCO2, which was still slightly low, had returned to baseline (T0) values. Most biochemical values had also returned to baseline, although sodium, chloride, aspartate transaminase, and creatine kinase were still high, and urea was low. Many hematologic values were still different from baseline values, with high values for WBC, neutrophils and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, and low values for PCV, total plasma protein, hemoglobin, RBC, and lymphocytes.

Groups of 21 male and 21 female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were fed diets containing pyriproxyfen at concentrations of 0, 80, 400, 2,000 and 10,000 ppm for 6 months. No death was found in any group. Alopecia in the neck and/or back, and soft feces were noticed in both sexes fed 10,000 ppm. A marked decrease in body weight gain was observed in both sexes fed 10,000 ppm throughout the treatment period, accompanying a decrease in food-consumption and an increase in water-intake during the initial stage of treatment. In terms of urinalysis, proteinuria, increases in K excretion, and, in number, yellowness or browish-yellowness in appearance, were observed in both sexes fed 10,000 ppm. In females fed 10,000 ppm, increases in bilirubin, Na excretion and specific gravity, and a decrease in ketone bodies, were observed. In hematology, decreases in erythrocyte count, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit value, were observed in both sexes fed 10,000 ppm and in males fed 2,000 ppm. Also, an increase in MCH (in males), decreases in MCHC and platelet count (in females) were observed in 10,000 ppm group. In a group of 17 patients with mild hypertension the antihypertensive effect of Metipamide VUFB was investigated. In the course of fourteen weeks' treatment the mean blood pressure declined from 20.5/13.3 kPa to 17.3/11.2 kPa and at the end of the investigation the diastolic blood pressure readings were normal in all patients. Echocardiography revealed a slight decline of the total peripheral resistance. The natriuretic effect was confirmed which is in the foreground of the antihypertensive action of metipamide. Investigation of side-effects of treatment revealed in 12 patients hypokaliaemia calling for substitution treatment, or when used clinically, a combination with a
potassium
sparing diuretic. There was a rise of the AST and
ALT
activity. The renal function did not change. The clinically significant drop of serum uric acid was striking. Glucose tolerance and serum lipids were not affected.

The Kodak Ektachem DT 60 Analyzer, a compact tabletop analyzer, which is based on the multilayer film technology, has been evaluated to assess its suitability for veterinary use. For a period of 6 months more than 400 serum samples from dogs and cats were analyzed for the following 11 analytes:

. Results obtained with the DT 60 Analyzer were compared with those gained from a Hitachi 705 autoanalyzer and from an Eppendorf flame photometer. Precision study results (within-run precision and between-run precision) were generally very good. Comparisons with other methods were quite satisfactory. Good to very good correlation was found for nearly all the parameters. The analyzer is easy to use and has proved to be reliable. It can be used successfully in the determination of serum-analytes in dogs and cats.

Metabolic and hormonal responses of eight adult male collared peccaries (Tayassu tajacu) to an ad libitum diet intake, or 25% of an ad libitum intake, were examined. Blood samples for hematological, serum-biochemical and hormonal profiles were collected at three week intervals during the nine week experiment starting 4 August 1983. Males fed on the restricted diet lost an average of 26% of their body weight during the trial, compared to a slight weight gain for those fed ad libitum. Characteristics of the red and white blood cell populations were not influenced by diet intake, with the exception of mean corpuscular volume, which was consistently lower amongst males fed on the restricted diet. Restricted food intake resulted in significantly elevated serum values for urea nitrogen, urea nitrogen:creatinine, urea index, alpha globulin:beta globulin, gamma globulin:albumin, nonesterified fatty acids, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase isozymes (LD1 and LD2). Restricted food intake resulted in significantly lowered serum values for total alpha globulin, alpha-1 globulin, total beta globulin, beta-1 globulin, beta-2 globulin, glucose, triglycerides, calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, copper and triiodothyronine. These data suggest male libido might be depressed during poor range conditions, while maintenance of spermatogenesis might permit them to take immediate advantage of improved range conditions. Blood analysis of metabolic and hormonal function can provide useful information for predicting the adult male's nutritional and reproductive condition.
