In an earlier report from this laboratory, one of the early manifestations of hypervitaminosis A was shown to be a marked stimulation of hepatic gluconeogenesis. In the present study, effects of feeding 30,000 IU of retinyl palmitate to young rats (80-100 g), once daily, for 2 days on the incorporation of 14C-labeled precursors into glucose and glycogen by liver slices, levels of amino acids in blood and tissues, and activities of some important amino acid catabolizing enzymes in the liver were investigated. A stimulation of hepatic gluconeogenesis in hypervitaminosis A was indicated by the increased incorporation of 14C-labeled alanine and bicarbonate into glucose and glycogen by liver slices. Excessive intake of
retinol
caused a marked increase in the activities of hepatic
alanine aminotransferase
and ornithine aminotransferase and a decrease in that of tryptophan pyrrolase, without affecting those of tyrosine aminotransferase and serine dehydratase. The ratio of NADH:NAD in the livers of rats fed excess
retinol
was significantly increased. It is suggested that enhancement of glucoeogenesis in hypervitaminosis A is caused by a stimulation of gluconeogenic activity of the liver.

is fed during 15 days. Chloroform administration strongly enhances liver ODC activity in normal rats. In the deficiency, stimulation is lower in absolute value but relatively higher if referred to basal level. After

refeeding, chloroform stimulates enzyme activity to nearly normal values. Vitamin A deficiency impairs obviously liver ODC activity and its response to chloroform stimulation in rats, but the stroke is at least partially reversible in our conditions. Moreover, deficient animals maintain a non negligible capacity of ODC response under chloroform stimulation.

Biochemical and metabolic indicators were monitored in a group of volunteers suffering from a variety of chronic illnesses participating in a week's course on a special uncooked vegetable diet, known as "living food". Unmatched healthy controls ate the same diet cooked for 2 min in a microwave oven. After 1 week on the regimen, serum protein and urea contents decreased and

(ALAT) activity increased in both groups, although all within the normal range. Blood glucose increased in both groups to slightly above normal limits but total serum cholesterol dropped about 1 mmol/l from normal starting levels. Serum tocopherol and

increased only in the group eating the uncooked diet. In both groups urinary sodium dropped drastically without a significant change in potassium. Serum and urinary phenol and p-cresol diminished also significantly. It is concluded that this vegetable diet may be of some benefit in the short term but any longer-term use requires evaluation.

The authors report on occurrence, causes and diagnostics of liver affections observed in fattening bulls in Ukrainia between 1982 and 1988. For this purpose, 2747 bulls in 10 fattening plants had been controlled clinically once during the last month of their final fattening period (lasting, according to the feeding schedule, from the 4th until the 12th, or from the 6th until the 18th month of life), and 1318 of them were controlled for eventual hepatic lesions at slaughter. The authors found an increase in liver affections during the final fattening period. The type of lesion found preferentially in the different fattening plants showed a certain correlation with feeding used in these: The prevalence of liver lesions (i.e. in 87.2% of the animals controlled) were found in fattening bulls fed cereal branstraw-pellets; among these, liver abscesses were most frequent (i.e. 55.2% of all lesions observed in this group). Steatosis of the liver was prevalent in fattening bulls receiving eating offalls (i.e. 82.7% of all lesions found in that group), whereas liver cirrhosis was prevalent in fattening bulls fed with sugar beet chips-silage. In Holstein-bulls, liver lesions were about double as frequent as in Fleckvieh-bulls (i.e. 37.3 and 16.7% of the livers controlled were found involved, respectively). A prospective study was performed in the Dutch flower bulb culture to investigate the possible effects of subchronic exposure to the soil fumigant 1,3-dichloropropene (DCP) on liver and kidney function and on glutathione conjugation capacity in blood. Urine spot samples and venous blood samples from 14 workers applying DCP (applicators) were taken at the start of the season in July, and after the season in October. Serial nutritional assessments using arm anthropometry, computed tomography of the thigh, and serum biochemical indexes during an eight-month period were performed on nine children with short-bowel syndrome receiving home parenteral nutrition. The mean patient age at the beginning of the study was 3.0 years. In anthropometric measurements, the mean body weight of our test population did not deviate from that of the normal population. Most patients were below the normal median for height. The mean midarm muscle area was 114% of the normal median, and the mean midarm fat area was 98% of the normal median. The mean weight and height velocities were 148% and 122% of the standard, respectively.

-binding protein values, albumin levels, and total lymphocyte counts of the patients were low, while levels of aspartate aminotransferase and
alanine aminotransferase
were slightly elevated. Midarm muscle and fat compartment sizes were highly correlated with thigh muscle and fat compartment sizes, as demonstrated by computed tomography. Our results demonstrate that children with short-bowel syndrome receiving home parenteral nutrition can maintain normal growth characteristics and extremity compartment sizes.
