Uric acid, and urea were more concentrated in the cystic fluid while Mg, Ca and total protein were more pronounced in the blood. The results obtained seem to indicate that simple renal cyst could originate from glomerular proximal tubulus part of the nephron as consequence of an obstructive cause.

The present study was conducted to observe the effect of platelet activating factor antagonist-WEB 2086 on the galactosamine/endotoxin (GalN/E)-induced rat liver injury. The results showed that the WEB 2086 (1, 20 or 40 mg/kg, ip) diminished significantly GaIN/E induced elevations of

in the serum (P less than 0.01). Histological changes of the liver were also found to be improved significantly by WEB 2086 administration. Additionally, WEB 2086 decreased significantly the GaIN/E-induced increase of Malondialdehyde (MDA) and Myeloperoxidase (MPO) in the liver (P less than 0.05-0.01), and prevented the decreasing of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the liver (P less than 0.01). The results obtained with WEB 2086 confirm that platelet activating factor (PAF) has an important role in the pathophysiology of liver injury, PAF-antagonists may have protective effects on liver injury.

The importance of calcium and phosphorus metabolism for the development of hypertrophic cardiomyopathies is still obscure. Therefore 52 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy were subjected to detailed cardiological and laboratory examinations. Twenty-five age matched healthy subjects served as controls. , urea, creatinine, protein electrophoresis (to check calcium values with regard to serum albumins), endogenous creatinine clearance, Palmer's chloride phosphate index and Nordin's index. In addition to tubular phosphate reabsorption, the renal phosphate threshold was assessed and finally the parathormone blood level by the RIA method. In patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy a significant increase of the parathormone level was found--in a total of seven patients with advanced myocardial hypertrophy (more than 30 mm). There were no significant differences in the remaining parameters. It may thus be admitted that in some instances the increased parathormone level may cause an increase of the already existing myocardial hypertrophy. However, in the broad spectrum of patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy it is not suited for explaining morphological findings.

) were measured in the mucosal homogenates of the duodenum, jejunum and caecum of full-fed (control), starved and refed White Rock Cockerels. Starvation caused a significant (p less than or equal to 0.05) increase in the activity of
ACP
in all three segments of the intestine. Subsequent re-feeding brought the activity back to the control level. In contrast ALP activity fell in the duodenum during starvation and was partially restored by refeeding. In the jejunum and caecum the ALP activity decreased during starvation and was fully restored by re-feeding only in the caecum. ASAT activity increased (p less than or equal to 0.05) during the entire period of starvation in all three segments. Re-feeding failed to decrease the enzyme activity within 48 hours. Starvation caused a reduction (p less than or equal to 0.05) in the activity of ALAT and re-feeding did not increase the activity in the duodenum and jejunum. The caecum showed no change in the activity during fasting.

A total of 332 persons from three localities in the Fiji Islands have been tested for genetic variation in 24 red cell enzyme systems and 4 serum protein systems. Polymorphic variation was present at 7 red cell enzyme loci and 1 serum protein locus. Physical, biochemical, and cytologic properties of synovial fluid from normal equine tarsal joints were investigated. Tarsal synovial fluid was pale yellow, clear, free of flocculent material, and did not clot. Volume varied in direct proportion to individual tarsal joint size. Relative viscosity was related to volume, polymerization and quantity of hyaluronic acid, and protein concentration. Mucinous precipitate quality (hyaluronic acid polymerization) was uniformly high. Results of certain analyses of serum were compared with those of tarsal synovial fluid. Tarsal synovial fluid protein concentration was low in conjunction with a high A:G ratio.
