We studied the inheritance and linkage of ACO-1, ACO-2, AAT-1,
AAT
-2, EST-3, EST-6, FDH, LAP-1,
PGD
-2, SKDH, and TPI-1 in four F2 populations of grasspea (Lathyrus sativus L.) using horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis. Mendelian inheritance was observed for all of the isozymes studied. All isozymes showed codominant gene expression except for EST-3, which was expressed in a dominant fashion due to the presence of a null allele. Monomeric quaternary structure was observed for ACO-1, ACO-2, EST-6, LAP-1, and SKDH. Dimeric quaternary structure was observed for AAT-1,
AAT
-2, FDH,
PGD
-2, and TPI-1. The isozyme loci Aat-2 and Skdh were linked with a map distance of 28 cM.

Bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide; LPS) augments the hepatotoxicity of a number of xenobiotics including allyl alcohol. The mechanism for this effect is known to involve the inflammatory response elicited by LPS. Upregulation of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and production of eicosanoids are important aspects of inflammation, therefore studies were undertaken to investigate the role of COX-2 in LPS-induced enhancement of liver injury from allyl alcohol. Rats were pretreated (iv) with a noninjurious dose of LPS or sterile saline vehicle and 2 h later were treated (ip) with a noninjurious dose of allyl alcohol or saline vehicle. COX-2 mRNA was determined by semiquantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and liver injury was assessed from activities in serum of alanine and aspartate aminotransferases (ALT and
AST
, respectively) and from histology. Liver injury was observed only in rats cotreated with LPS and allyl alcohol. Serum ALT activity was increased by 4 h after administration of LPS and continued to increase through 8 h. COX-2 mRNA was detectable at low levels in livers from rats receiving only the vehicles at any time up to 8 h. Expression of COX-2 mRNA was increased by 30 min after administration of LPS and remained elevated through 6 h. Allyl alcohol treatment alone caused an increase in COX-2 mRNA at 4 h (2 h after allyl alcohol) that lasted less than 2 h. In livers from rats cotreated with LPS and allyl alcohol, levels of COX-2 mRNA were greater than levels seen with either LPS or allyl alcohol alone. The increased expression of COX-2 mRNA was accompanied by an increase in the concentration of prostaglandin (PG) D(2) in plasma. Plasma
PGD
(2) concentration was increased to a greater extent in rats treated with LPS plus allyl alcohol compared to allyl alcohol or LPS alone. Pretreatment with the COX-2 selective inhibitor, NS-398, abolished the increase in plasma
PGD
(2) and reduced the increase in ALT and
AST
activities observed in rats cotreated with LPS and allyl alcohol. NS-398 did not affect liver injury from allyl alcohol alone administered at a larger, hepatotoxic dose. In addition, ibuprofen, a nonselective inhibitor of cyclooxygenases, did not protect against liver injury from LPS plus allyl alcohol. In isolated hepatocytes
PGD
(2), but not PGE(2), reduced the concentration of allyl alcohol required to cause half-maximal cytotoxicity. These results suggest that products of COX-2 play a role in the augmentation of allyl alcohol-induced liver injury by LPS.

The main parameters of genetic variability have been determined in an isolated natural Scotch pine population from Chita oblast' (Tsasuchei Forest) by analysis of 19 genes coding for nine enzymes: GDH, IDH, LAP, PGM,
AAT
, ADH, MDH, 6-
PGD
, and DIA. Polymorphic genes constituted 63.2% of all structural genes studied in the population at the 99% polymorphism criterion. The mean number of alleles per locus was 1.63. The observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.237 and 0.251, respectively. These estimates are close to the corresponding mean values for Scotch pine according to the data on 18 or more structural genes.

Polymorphism of six isozyme systems (ME, EST, 6-
PGD
,
AAT
, ACP, IDH) of sunflower mutant inbred lines has been studied. It was shown that only three of them were polymorphic (ME, EST, 6-
PGD
). Two isoforms were observed for each polymorphic enzymic zone. Genetic control of malic-enzyme has been studied and it was determined that the identified polymorphic zone of the enzyme was controlled by one gene. The genes of malic-enzyme synthesis, anodal esterase and 6-phosphogluconat-dehydrogenase are inherited independently.

The aim of the study was to verify the similarity of 13 species and 5 cultivars of ornamental alliums and classify them into groups based on morphological and isozyme variation. The work embraced: Allium aflatunense, A. caeruleum, A. christophii, A. giganteum, A. karataviense, A. moly, A. nigrum, A. pyrenaicum, A. rosenbachianum, A. schubertii, A. siculum (syn. Nectaroscordum siculum), A. sphaerocephalon, A. strictum, A. stipitatum 'Album', A. 'Ivory Queen', A. 'Lucy Ball', A. 'Mont Blanc', and A. 'Purple Sensation'. Scape length, inflorescence diameter, and flowering period were recorded. Isozyme marker polymorphism was assessed by starch gel electrophoresis. Eight polymorphic isozyme systems (
AAT
, GPI, PGM, ALAT, ACP, DIAP, ALDO,
PGD
) were selected from 16 analysed in the taxa. Besides the differences between the taxa, the isozymes revealed intraspecific polymorphism in 5 systems. A total of 37 markers were obtained and used for dendrogram construction. The most similar taxa were A. karataviense with A. 'Ivory Queen', and A. karataviense with A. christophii (similarity level 0.78). A high similarity of 11 taxa belonging to one group (A. aflatunense, A. christophii, A. giganteum, A. karataviense, A. nigrum, A. schubertii, A. 'Ivory Queen', A. 'Lucy Ball', A. stipitatum 'Album', A. 'Mont Blanc', A. 'Purple Sensation') suggested that this group could be identified with the subgenus Melanocrommyum.
