Biochemical variables have been measured in a group of volunteers during and after a long-distance run. Plasma glucose levels remained relatively constant and a significant decrease in plasma bicarbonate was noted. Plasma sodium, chloride, total protein, albumin and calcium showed significant increased of an order compatible with water losses occurring during the run. Plasma potassium, urea, creatinine, uric acid, phosphate and bilirubin all show much more marked and variable increases. The plasma enzymes
alkaline phosphatase
, lactate dehydrogenase,
aspartate aminotransferase
and creatine kinase likewise increased significantly throughout the run. Whilst most constituents showed a tendency to return to normal at 20-30 hours after the run, gross increases were observed for

The relationship between the antifertility effect of alpha-chlorohydrin and changes in composition of luminal plasma from the cauda epididymidis of rats and rabbits has been investigated. At each dose regimen studied, the fertilizing capacity of rats treated with alpha-chlorohydrin was reduced to zero. The levels of sodium, potassium, glycerylphosphorylcholine (GPC), acid phosphatase and
alkaline phosphatase
in epididymal plasma were not markedly affected by drug treatment. The most noticeable change was a considerable increase in the concentration of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) at all dose levels and of
glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase
(GOT) after 7 days of treatment with 8 and 16 mg/kg. The effect of cold shock on the composition of epididymal plasma showed that LDH and GOT are, at least in part, derived from spermatozoa. In contrast, alpha-chlorohydrin did not have an antifertility action in the rabbit, and the only notable change in the compositon of epididymal plasma was an increase in the level of GPC. These results provide evidence that, in the rat, alpha-chlorohydrin or a metabolite primarily exerts its antifertility effect by a direct action on the spermatozoa, whilst in the rabbit a barrier may exist to the entrance of the drug into the lumen of the epididymal duct.

In 50 patients with mitral stenosis in the stage of maximal clinical improvement a correlation between the functional state of liver and the morphological changes was estblished. For this purpose the serum total bilirubin concentration was determined together with the serum total protein, albumin and globulin levels, serum alanine aminotransferase,

, cholinesterase, leucylaminopeptidase, and

activities. The bromsulphalein test, provoked hypoprothrombinemia test, and histological examination of liver biopsy specimens were made. It was found that with increasing liver morphological lesions there is a gradual but not parallel impairment of function. The most sensitive index of hepatic functional disturbances was the test of provoked hypoprothrombinemia according to Kirchmayer and Bromowiczowa. For full assessment of the degree to which the changes in the congested liver have advanced it is necessary to perform liver function tests in combination with histological examination of the organ.

The operational characteristics of the Gilford System 3500 were evaluated for six months as to accuracy, precision, carry-over, reliability, and ease of operation. Accuracy was evaluated by comparison to manual methods of established accuracy. The tests evaluated and their respective correlation coefficients are as follows: glucose (0.99), blood urea nitrogen (0.99), calcium (0.97), total bilirubin (0.99),

(0.98), albumin (0.96), and total protein (0.96). Within-run precision (CV) for three commercial calibration sera of differing analyte concentrations (low, intermediate, and high) were respectively: 0.69, 1.02, 1.18; 5.4, 1.2, 1.09; 0.83, 0.77, 0.86; 5.9, 1.0, 0.86; 6.4, 5.2, 2.1; 3.7, 1.5, 1.3; 0.0, 1.4, 0.97; and 1.2, 1.3, 0.75. Day-to-day precision, similarly evaluated during 101-164 days, met accepted criteria for clinically acceptable precision. Carry-over for each of the eight tests was less than 1%. Instrument reliability has been excellent, and training time is short. In summary, we have found the Gilford System 3500 to be sufficiently precise and fast, easy to operate, highly accurate, and flexible.

Venous blood samples were collected monthly from 60 male and 60 female Sinclair (S-1) miniature swine from 1 through 36 months of age. Serum total protein concentration increased linearly from 1 through 10 months of age and remained stable thereafter with no sex related difference. Serum albumin concentration decreased from 1 through 3 months, increased from 3 through 8 months and decreased from 14 through 36 months. From 2 through 36 months, serum alpha-globulin concentration decreased; whereas, serum beta-globulin concentration increased. Serum gamma-globulin concentration increased markedly from 1 through 3 months and continued to increase through 36 months of age. From 10 through 36 months, males had a greater mean serum gamma-globulin concentration than did females. Serum total globulin concentration increased most rapidly from 1 through 3 months, less rapidly from 3 through 18 months and remained stable thereafter. Serum albumin/globulin ratio decreased sharply from 1 through 3 months and continued to decrease from 6 through 36 months with females having a greater mean concentration than males. Serum

Increased concentrations of neopterin have been found in conditions causing a stimulation of cellular immunity, including various malignancies. In liver diseases, serum or urinary neopterin levels have been studied in acute viral hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, fatty liver and liver cirrhosis. In the present study neopterin serum levels have been measured in 16 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in 32 patients with liver cirrhosis, and in 28 healthy subjects as controls. Mean values of serum neopterin were significantly increased (p < 0.01) in patients with HCC (15.89 +/- 6.34 nmol/l) when compared with those of normal subjects (4.74 +/- 2.13 nmol/l), but no difference was observed between patients with HCC (associated or not with liver cirrhosis) and patients with liver cirrhosis. Neopterin concentrations are not affected by liver cirrhosis aetiology, nor by its clinical severity, and are not correlated to the values of serum alpha-fetoprotein, alanine aminotransferase,
