The erythrocytes of 350 pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) were examined for electrophoretic variation of hemoglobin and 26 enzymes. Seven enzymes showed variation in more than 1% of individuals: phosphoglucose isomerase, phosphoglucomutase-1, soluble NADP-dependent isocitric dehydrogenase, peptidase A, peptidase C, 2,3-diphosphoglycerate mutase, and
acid phosphatase
. Variation with lesser frequency was found in soluble
glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase
, phosphoglycerate kinase, lactic dehydrogenase, and hemoglobin. Only eight samples were tested for esterase D, and one of these had a variant phenotype. Enzymes with no clear variation were adenylate kinase, adenosine deaminase, phosphofructokinase, hexokinase, pyruvate kinase, glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, aldolase, phosphoglycerate mutase, phosphopyruvate hydratase (enolase), phosphoglucomutase-3, and superoxide dismutase. There was father-to-son transmission of PGI, PGM-1, peptidase C, 6PGD, 2,3-DPGAM, NADP-ICD, and
acid phosphatase
variants, suggesting that these loci are autosomal as in man.

In a study of 4-hr hemorrhagic hypotension in dogs, the plasma levels of the lysosomal enzymes, cathepsin (CATH) and
acid phosphatase
(AP) showed early and progressive increases in activity. The plasma levels of the intestinal fraction of alkaline phosphatase (IAkP) and
aspartate aminotransferase
(
AAT
) were increased after 2 hr of hypotension and the liver specific enzyme, ornithine carbamyltransferase (OCT), and creatine phosphokinase (CPK), after 3 hr. All of the enzymes showed large increases after 4 hr of hypotension. The plasma levels of CATH showed the earliest and largest relative increase indicating that with the shock model used, this enzyme was the most sensitive indicator of shock severity. The increase in plasma enzyme levels was probably the result of tissue damage in the splanchnic region but the elevation of plasma CPK, a muscle specific enzyme, indicates some muscle cell damage as well. While the increase in the plasma enzyme activity is probably due, in large part, to cellular damage, it is likely that a decreased enzyme removal rate--resulting from a hypofunctional RES--also contributes to the elevated plasma enzyme levels during hemorrhagic hypotension.

The relationship between the antifertility effect of alpha-chlorohydrin and changes in composition of luminal plasma from the cauda epididymidis of rats and rabbits has been investigated. At each dose regimen studied, the fertilizing capacity of rats treated with alpha-chlorohydrin was reduced to zero. The levels of sodium, potassium, glycerylphosphorylcholine (GPC),
acid phosphatase
and alkaline phosphatase in epididymal plasma were not markedly affected by drug treatment. The most noticeable change was a considerable increase in the concentration of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) at all dose levels and of
glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase
(GOT) after 7 days of treatment with 8 and 16 mg/kg. The effect of cold shock on the composition of epididymal plasma showed that LDH and GOT are, at least in part, derived from spermatozoa. In contrast, alpha-chlorohydrin did not have an antifertility action in the rabbit, and the only notable change in the compositon of epididymal plasma was an increase in the level of GPC. These results provide evidence that, in the rat, alpha-chlorohydrin or a metabolite primarily exerts its antifertility effect by a direct action on the spermatozoa, whilst in the rabbit a barrier may exist to the entrance of the drug into the lumen of the epididymal duct.

Adrenalectomy showed practically no influence on the dynamics of the LDH and AP activity. An increase in the activity of the

and especially of the ALT in the serum of adrenalectomized rats after the trauma was considerably less than in the animals with the intact adrenal glands.

(EC 3.1.3.1) and non-specific esterase (EC 3.1.1.1) was carried out in liver, kidney, duodenum, jejunum and ileum. In the course of the experiment changes of the enzymatic activities of
aspartate aminotransferase
observed in both experimental groups of sheep were similar to those seen in the control group of animals (Tab. I). As compared to the starting values, no significant changes in the activity of alanine aminotransferase were observed in group II of the experiment and in the controls. However, a significantly decreased alanine aminotransferase activity could be seen in the blood serum of sheep of group I (Tab. II). In both experimental groups of animals no significant changes in the acetylcholine esterase could be seen (Tab. III). As compared to the starting values, no significant changes were observed in creatinine levels of the control and the 1st experimental group of sheep (Tab. IV). In the sheep of the 2nd group a temporary significant decrease (p < 0.05) in creatinine levels was seen. The dynamics of urea levels was similar to starting values in all animals throughout the experiment Tab. V). In the control group of animals (Fig. 1) the high density of reaction product of alkaline phosphatase was determined in the microvilli of enterocytes of the small intestine. In the small intestine of the animals of both experimental groups, the activity of this enzyme was shown to be located in the same zone (Fig. 2). In all experimental animals in the parenchyma of the liver and kidney no significant changes could be observed. In both experimental and control animals the high activity of
acid phosphatase

Isoenzyme analysis was conducted on the tachyzoite stage of 35 Toxoplasma gondii isolates. Fifteen enzyme systems were studied after isoelectrofocusing of tachyzoite extracts in polyacrylamide or agarose gels. Six enzyme systems showed variable electrophoretic patterns:

(EC 3.1.3.2), and propionyl esterase. Their combination allows the description of 5 zymodemes among the 35 T. gondii isolates. Zymodeme 1 involves 6 isolates that are highly pathogenic to mice and for which oocysts could not be obtained. Isolates belonging to zymodemes 2, 3, and 4 are less pathogenic to mice and produced oocysts. Zymodeme 5 involves only 1 isolate, which was highly pathogenic to mice.

in the liver, by a decrease of the activity of Na(+)-, K(+)-ATPase, succinate dehydrogenase and cytochromoxidase in the liver, lowering of the rate of bile secretion, excretion of bile acids, bilirubin and cholesterol with bile. Provided the drugs are administered in combination, the hepatotoxicity rises, particularly in combination of isoniazid with rifampicin, and especially as isoniazid is combined with rifampicin and ethambutol.

Medical records of 11 cats with lymphoma involving large granular lymphocytes were reviewed. All 9 cats tested were FeLV-negative. Ten cats had a history of anorexia, lethargy, vomiting, or diarrhea, and had lymphoma involving abdominal viscera. The most common site of tumor in these cats was the jejunum. One cat had cutaneous masses caused by dermal and epidermal infiltration with neoplastic large granular lymphocytes. The most common hematologic abnormality was leukocytosis, characterized by neutrophilia with a left shift (7 cats); 2 cats had a left shift without neutrophilia. None of the cats had lymphocytosis, but immature large granular lymphocytes were found in the blood of 4 cats. The most common serum biochemical abnormalities were hypoalbuminemia (10 cats), hypocalcemia (10 cats), hypoproteinemia (9 cats), high
aspartate transaminase
activity (9 cats), and hyperbilirubinemia (8 cats). Large granular lymphocytes were characterized by abundant cytoplasm containing distinct azurophilic granules that varied in size and number. The most common cytochemical staining pattern included detection of alpha-naphthyl butyrate esterase,

, and beta-glucuronidase activities. On examination of histologic sections, granules stained weakly eosinophilic with Giemsa and moderately with periodic acid-Schiff reaction. Ultrastructurally, the granules appeared membrane bound and contained an electron-dense matrix in 4 cats.

The alterations of haematological parameters in albino rats were studied after oral administration of an aqueous extract of silken styles of corn (Zea maize Linn.) at 50, 100 and 150 mg kg-1 daily for 21 days. The following haematological values were significantly reduced on the 7th and 21st day following extract administration: haemoglobin (Hb), red blood corpuscles (RBC), clotting time (CT), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), haematocrit (Ht), serum glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), cholesterol,

Effect of A. indica leaf extract on serum enzyme levels (
glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase
, glutamate pyruvate transaminase,
acid phosphatase
and alkaline phosphatase) elevated by paracetamol in rats was studied with a view to observe any possible hepatoprotective effect of this plant. It was interesting to observe that serum enzyme levels were much elevated in paracetamol induced animals than in those receiving a combination of paracetamol and lead extract. It is stipulated that the extract treated group was protected from hepatic cell damage caused by paracetamol induction. The findings were further confirmed by histopathological study of liver.
