Among 998 children with recurrent respiratory diseases 26 children with selective IgA deficiency were found. Three groups were considered according to IgA level in serum: group I with IgA under 0.05 g per litre; group II with IgA between 0.05 and 0.3 g per litre; group III with IgA above 0.3 and under 1 g per litre. Non specific immunity was studied in these patients including immunoglobulin levels, alpha-1-antitrypsin (A.A.T.) phenotypes, phagocytosis of
staphylococcus
aureus by PMN, lysozyme level, complement system. Cellular immunity was evaluated by IDR tests and rosette forming cells (RE). Only non specific immune systems were disturbed in some patients and appeared as aggravating factors in IgA deficient patients. We found: Abnormal phenotypes of ATT in 11 cases; deficiencies of engulfment in 6 cases, of bactericidal activities of PMN in 7 cases out of 16 studied; decrease of lysozyme level in 4 cases out of 17 studied; increase of IgE level in 9 cases with atopic symptoms in 7 patients. Activity of a number of enzymes participating in the processes of structure metabolism and dynamics of inclusion of 14C-aspartate in initial strain of Staphylococcus aureus sensitive to antibiotics and strains containing plasmids of resistance to various antibiotics have been comparatively studied. An increase in activity of fumarate-hydratase, acetyl-KoA-carboxylase,

and well as true increases (by the rate of inclusion of 14C-aspartate in a number of strains containing plasmids) of resistance to antibiotics as compared to plasmid-less variant are shown. This evidence for strengthening of biosynthetic function of a cycle of tricarbonic acids and, allowing for extremely low activity of alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, one can suppose that an open cycle of tricarbonic acids functions in the given strain of
staphylococcus
. The increase of the level of acetyl-KoA-carboxylase activity evidences for the intensification of lipid synthesis in antibiotic-resistant staphylococci as compared to the sensitive variants.

The D-zone test detects inducible clindamycin resistance in Staphylococcus spp. Two other methods not described by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) are available to test for this resistance mechanism: an agar dilution method and new Vitek 2 cards. This study evaluated the performance of both methods in detecting inducible clindamycin resistance. Nonduplicate clinical strains of Staphylococcus spp. (111 Staphylococcus aureus and 52 coagulase-negative
staphylococcus
strains), intermediate or resistant to erythromycin but susceptible to clindamycin, were obtained from three hospitals in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Molecular analysis to detect resistance genes was conducted on all strains. A Mueller-Hinton agar containing 1 mg of erythromycin and 0.5 mg of clindamycin/liter was used for the dilution method, and two inocula were tested: 10(4) and 10(5) CFU per spot. Plates were read at 24 and 48 h. The Vitek 2

-P580 card was used according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The results were compared to those of the D-zone test. The D-zone test was positive in 134 of 163 (82%) strains. With the 10(4) CFU inoculum, the sensitivities were 84 and 99% at 24 and 48 h, respectively. The 10(5) CFU inoculum increased the sensitivities at 24 and 48 h to 91 and 100%, respectively. The specificity was 100% for the 10(4) CFU inoculum at 24 h and 97% for the other combinations. The sensitivity and specificity for the Vitek 2 card were 93 and 100%, respectively. The performance of both the agar dilution method and the Vitek 2 card was good, but these methods were not as sensitive as the D-zone test at 24 h.
