An epidemic of chronic rhinitis in a population of 50 captive spur-thighed tortoises (Testudo graeca graeca) from Palafrugell (Girona, Spain) is described, in which eight animals died and 12 were euthanatized to perform necropsies and post-mortem studies. . Hematology and serum biochemistry were performed in 33 of the 50 ill animals and in 29 healthy tortoises from three disease-free populations. Lymphocyte count,
aspartate aminotransferase

AST
) activity, and alpha-globulin levels were significantly higher in the animals from the sick population. The heterophil count was significantly lower in the sick animals. Some of the diseased tortoises also showed a normocytic-normochromic anemia. Lesions were restricted to the respiratory system and oral cavity. Marked epithelial hyperplasia and presence of a severe mixed inflammatory infiltrate in the epithelium of the oral, nasal, and tracheal mucosae were observed. Electron microscopy demonstrated the presence of intracytoplasmic and intranuclear viral particles of the size, shape, and distribution pattern typical of a herpesvirus.

A 16-year old girl presented with rapid onset of muscular weakness and a history of severe dysphagia, dysphonia and significant wasting. On examination, she was dystrophic (BMI 15.7) and had signs of myopathy. Laboratory findings confirmed myopathy (CPK 106.4 microkat/L (6384 IU/L),

2.86 microkat/L (171.6 IU/L), myoglobin 1582 microg/L). There was profound hypokalaemia (S-K 1.8 mmol/L) suggesting hypokalaemic paralysis. Diagnosis of distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) was based on combination of hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, severe hypokalaemia, high urinary pH and positive value of urinary anion gap. There was evidence of other signs of renal tubular impairment (urinary beta-2-microglobulin 213 mg/L, glomerulotubular proteinuria 1.01g/24h). Autoimmune tests (rheumatoid factor, antinuclear antibodies, autoantibodies to Ro/SSA and La/SSB) together with symptoms of xerostomia with swallowing difficulties and atrophic
glossitis
suggested primary Sjogren's syndrome (SS) as the underlying cause of dRTA. The renal biopsy confirmed chronic tubulo-interstitial nephritis compatible with this diagnosis. Full recovery of muscle weakness and hypokalaemia and acidosis followed after potassium and alkali replacement therapy. Corticosteroids were administered with subsequent addition of cyclosporine A because of disease activity. In conclusion, primary SS is a rare diagnosis in childhood and adolescence and should be considered in patients presenting with hypokalaemic paralysis, as this might be due to dRTA, even in the absence of apparent sicca syndrome.

Juvenile cobalamin deficiency is a rare disease in border collies and its diagnosis requires a high level of clinical suspicion. The goal of this study was to increase awareness of this disease by describing the clinical and laboratory findings in four young border collies with inherited cobalamin deficiency. The median age of the dogs was 11.5 mo (range, 8-42 mo), and two of the four dogs were full siblings. Clinical signs included intermittent lethargy (n = 4), poor body condition (n = 4), odynophagia (n = 2),
