In 112 prospectively selected patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction (AMI), the serum CK, CK-MB, LD, HBD, AST and m-AST were determined from the time of admission to hospital and every 12 hours for three days in succession. Sixteen of the enrolled patients died due to complications which arose within the first four days of hospitalization while the rest had a favourable outcome. All enzyme activities were determined at 37 degrees C using routine methods; m-AST was measured using an immunochemical method. The statistical analysis of the results demonstrated that 12 hours after admission, serum m-AST and m-AST/AST ratio were significantly higher in the group of non-survivors compared with patients with a favourable prognosis. No significant differences in CK-MB were observed between survivors and non-survivors during the entire period. True and false positive rates were calculated for these and the other enzymes. An optimum decision level of 34 IU/L was chosen for m-AST and 10% for the m-AST/AST ratio. This gave a percentage of correctly classified patients, after 12 and 24 hours, of 74.9% and 91.9%, respectively. In conclusion, the immunochemical determination of m-AST in patients with AMI seems to be an early prognostic index which is able to distinguish patients with unfavourable outcome.

Nine populations of Oncomelania, field-collected from Anhui, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Yunnan were studied by horizontal starch gel electrophoretic method with 24 enzyme systems (AAT, AcPH, AK, AO, APH, CK, EST, GDH, GPI, G6PD, HBD, ISDH, LAP, LDH, ME, MDH, MPI, NADD, OCT, PGM, 6PGD, SDH, SOD, XDH) analyzed. 40 loci and 117 alleles were detected in the Oncomelania. Both of GPI and PGM-I, with 7 alleles, were the most variable loci. 22 loci had more than 3 alleles each. Of 40 loci examined in the 24 isozyme systems, 14 were found to be polymorphic, the proportion of multilocus enzymes being 58.3%. Our results showed that the genetic polymorphism existing in the populations of Oncomelania in the mainland of China. PGM and MDH, were found in both the populations of Oncomelania and strains of Schistosoma japonicum in the mainland of China. The results provided a new idea for studying snails and Schistosoma. Also, we found that there might be some correlation between the polymorphic locus and the feature of the shell of Oncomelania snail.

The number of changes in some maternal serum biochemical parameters for some congenital malformations are presented. In all pregnancies we observed low levels of LAT, AST, CPK, HBD, AP and high levels of GGTP, THY, amylase. These data demonstrate total depression in metabolism of women with an affected fetus. The biological basis of altered levels of enzymes in pregnancies with affected fetus is unclear.

Myocardial enzymes including aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), HBD (LDH1 and LDH2), and creatine kinase (CK) and its isoenzyme were monitored in 106 cases of malignant hematologic diseases. The findings were that average values of LDH and HBD increased. There were 82.4% myocardial enzyme levels of 51 patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) returning to normal or making an obvious reduction after chemotherapy associated with drugs of heart toxicity, while there were increases of the myocardial enzyme levels before chemotherapy. Patients with the increasing of enzyme levels were only 3.9% after chemotherapy. After several courses of chemotherapy, the positive rates of the increasings of CK and CK-MB were higher than that of pretreatment. The results suggest that the injuries of myocardium are possible.

To complete a successful liver transplantation (LTx) from non-heart-beating donors (NHBD), it is necessary to both improve the energy status in liver grafts and to reduce the exposure to free radicals. This study investigated the effects of short perfusion with oxygenated buffer on the grafts prior to cold preservation. In addition, the effects of the antioxidant, biliverdin, for reduction of free radicals was investigated. Male Wistar rats were used. Livers were retrieved, preserved in UW solution, and perfused for 60 min with oxygenated Krebs-Henseleit solution. Rats were allocated to six groups as follows (n=5): (i) control group-no warm ischemia (WI) and cold preservation, (ii) HBD group--no WI with cold preservation for 6 h; (iii) NHBD group--with 30 min of WI and cold preservation, (iv) NM group--with WI including nafamostat mesilate infusion before cardiac arrest and cold preservation; (v) PRE group--with WI, 30-min pre-cold preservation perfusion with oxygenated buffer after cardiac arrest, and cold preservation, (vi) BV group-with the same treatment as the PRE group plus the addition of biliverdin to the pre-cold preservation perfusion. The portal flow volume, bile production, AST, and TNF-alpha in perfusate, energy charge (EC), and ATP level in the tissue, and histological findings were investigated. The portal flow volume in the NM, PRE, and BV groups were higher than in the NHBD group. The bile production in the PRE and BV groups were also higher than in the NHBD group. The EC and ATP level of the BV group after reperfusion were higher than those of the NHBD group. Pre-cold preservation perfusion and addition of biliverdin to perfusate improved viability of grafts from NHBD. The results indicate that the preservation of the energy status and microcirculation of the graft is important for successful LTx from NHBD.
