While it is known that both primary visual processes and visuocognitive responses are affected in Parkinson's Disease (PD), their relationship is not known. It is known that both of these measures can be affected by age per se. Our aims were to determine if in non-demented PD patients visual cognitive event-related potential (ERP) changes simply reflect abnormal primary visual processing and to determine the effects of age and disease on their relationship. In order to do so, we introduce a new normalizing procedure for visual ERPs. In addition to the latencies and amplitudes of P100, N140,
P200
, N200 and P300 components, the P300-P100 latency difference (termed "central processing time"-
CPT
) were measured. In order to avoid confounding factors of absolute amplitude differences due to say, generally low voltage recordings or poor primary visual responses, P300 responses normalized to P100 responses were also evaluated (P300/P100 amplitude ratio). Visual ERPs were obtained in an "oddball" paradigm in 20 nondemented patients with PD and 20 normal age-matched subjects. The stimuli were horizontal sinusoidal gratings differing only in spatial frequency (0.5 and 1 cycle/degree). While simple ERP latency criteria did not distinguish non-demented PD patients as a group from controls, when younger PD patients were compared to older PD patients and controls
CPT
acceleratedly increased in younger PD patients. The amplitudes of both N200 and P300 provided significant distinction between patient and control groups. The surprising result emerging from this study is that an individually normalized P300 amplitude provides significant distinction of younger PD patients from age matched normals.

The paired-click paradigm (PCP) is widely used to study sensory habituation or gating in a number of psychiatric and neurological conditions. The classic paradigm does not control for attentional factors. In order to assess the influences of incorporating attentional control measures we administered the auditory PCP (S1-S2) in three different attention (passive, auditory attention to S2, visual attention to a concurrent continuous performance task [
CPT
]) conditions to a group of chronic, medicated schizophrenia patients (N=12) and a group of healthy subjects (N=15) to evaluate the effects of attention on sensory gating measures. A significant effect of attention on S1 amplitudes was shown for P50 in both groups, and N100 or
P200
in schizophrenia patients. Attention status had a significant effect on S2 amplitudes for N100 and
P200
, and N100 and
P200
gating ratios. Despite the effect of attention on S1 P50 amplitudes there was no effect on the gating ratio. In terms of group differences, visual attention to the concurrent

during the paired-click sensory gating task significantly enhanced the detection of deficient gating of the N100 and

components, a visual distraction paradigm may enhance the detection of abnormal gating in schizophrenia patients.

The attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) shows an increased prevalence in arrested offenders compared to the normal population. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether ADHD symptoms are a major risk factor for criminal behaviour, or whether further deficits, mainly abnormalities in emotion-processing, have to be considered as important additional factors that promote delinquency in the presence of ADHD symptomatology. Event related potentials (ERPs) of 13 non-delinquent and 13 delinquent subjects with ADHD and 13 controls were compared using a modified visual Go/Nogo continuous performance task (VCPT) and a newly developed version of the visual
CPT
that additionally requires emotional evaluation (ECPT). ERPs were analyzed regarding their topographies and Global Field Power (GFP). Offenders with ADHD differed from non-delinquent subjects with ADHD in the ERPs representing higher-order visual processing of objects and faces (N170) and facial affect (
P200
), and in late monitoring and evaluative functions (LPC) of behavioural response inhibition. Concerning neural activity thought to reflect the allocation of neural resources and cognitive processing capability (P300 Go), response inhibition (P300 Nogo), and attention/expectancy (CNV), deviances were observable in both ADHD groups and may thus be attributed to ADHD rather than to delinquency. In conclusion, ADHD symptomatology may be a risk factor for delinquency, since some neural information processing deficits found in ADHD seemed to be even more pronounced in offenders with ADHD. However, our results suggest additional risk factors consisting of deviant higher-order visual processing, especially of facial affect, as well as abnormalities in monitoring and evaluative functions of response inhibition.

Background. Research on sports has revealed that behavioral responses and event-related brain potentials (ERP) are better in expert than in novice athletes for sport-related tasks. Focused attention is essential for optimal athletic performance across different sports but mainly in combat disciplines. During combat, long periods of focused attention (i.e., sustained attention) are required for a good performance. Few investigations have reported effects of expertise on brain electrical activity and its neural generators during sport-unrelated attention tasks. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of expertise (i.e., skilled and novice martial arts athletes) analyzing the ERP during a sustained attention task (Continuous Performance Task;

) and the cortical three-dimensional distribution of current density, using the sLORETA technique. Methods.

consisted in an oddball-type paradigm presentation of five stimuli (different pointing arrows) where only one of them (an arrow pointing up right) required a motor response (i.e., target).
CPT
was administered to skilled and novice martial arts athletes while EEG were recorded. Amplitude ERP data from target and non-target stimuli were compared between groups. Subsequently, current source analysis for each ERP component was performed on each subject. sLORETA images were compared by condition and group using Statistical Non-Parametric Mapping analysis. Results. Skilled athletes showed significant amplitude differences between target and non-target conditions in early ERP components (P100 and
P200
) as opposed to the novice group; however, skilled athletes showed no significant effect of condition in N200 but novices did show a significant effect. Current source analysis showed greater differences in activations in skilled compared with novice athletes between conditions in the frontal (mainly in the Superior Frontal Gyrus and Medial Frontal Gyrus) and limbic (mainly in the Anterior Cingulate Gyrus) lobes. Discussion. These results are supported by previous findings regarding activation of neural structures that underlie sustained attention. Our findings may indicate a better-controlled attention in skilled athletes, which suggests that expertise can improve effectiveness in allocation of attentional resources during the first stages of cognitive processing during combat.
