Phylogenetic relationships of 70 taxa representing 68 species of the Neotropical killifish family Rivulidae were derived from analysis of 1516 nucleotides sampled from four different segments of the mitochondrial genome: 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA,
cytochrome oxidase
I, and cytochrome b. The basal bifurcation of Cynolebiatinae and Rivulinae (Costa, 1990a,b) is supported; however, Terranatos, Maratecoara, and Plesiolebias are rivulins, not cynolebiatins. These three genera, along with the other recognized annual rivulin genera, form a monophyletic clade. Austrofundulus, Rachovia,
Renova
, Terranatos, and 3 species of the genus Pterolebias, all from northeastern South America, form a monophyletic clade excluding other species of Pterolebias. Pterolebias as presently understood is clearly polyphyletic. Trigonectes and Moema are supported as sister groups but do not form a monophyletic group with the genera Neofundulus and
Renova
as previously proposed. The suite of adaptations necessary for an annual life history has clearly been lost several times in the course of rivulid evolution. Also revealed is a considerable increase in substitution rate in most annual lineages relative to the nonannual Rivulus species. The widespread and speciose genus Rivulus is paraphyletic, representing both basal and terminal clades within the Rivulidae. Previous hypotheses regarding the vicariant origin of Greater Antillean Rivulus species are supported. Most rivulid clades show considerable endemism; thus, detailed analysis of rivulid phylogeny and distribution will contribute robust hypotheses to the clarification of Neotropical biogeography.

Retinoic acid
is well recognized to promote neuronal differentiation in the embryonic nervous system, but how it influences the postnatal cerebral cortex remains largely unknown. The domain of highest retinoic acid actions in the cortex of the mouse constricts postnatally to a narrow band that includes the dorsal visual stream and the attentional and executive networks. This band of cortex, which is distinguished by the retinoic acid-synthesizing enzyme RALDH3, exhibits signs of delayed maturation and enhanced plasticity compared to the surrounding cortex, as indicated by suppression of parvalbumin, neurofilament,
cytochrome oxidase
and perineuronal net maturation, and persistence of the embryonic, polysialated form of the neural cell-adhesion molecule PSA-NCAM. During the first postnatal week, the RALDH3-expressing territory translocates in the caudal cortex from the medial limbic lobe to the adjacent neocortex. This topographical shift requires the neurotrophin NT-3 because in mice lacking neuronal NT-3 the RALDH3 enzyme maintains its early postnatal pattern up to adulthood. In the NT-3-null mutants, expression of the markers, whose topography colocalizes with RALDH3 in the normal cortex, matches the abnormal RALDH3 pattern. This indicates that the uneven retinoic acid distribution serves a role in patterning the maturation and to some extent function of the normal postnatal cerebral cortex.

A reduced brown adipose phenotype in white adipose tissue (WAT) may contribute to obesity and type 2 diabetes in humans.
Retinoic acid
, the carboxylic form of vitamin A, triggers in rodents a reduction of body weight and adiposity and an increased expression of uncoupling proteins in brown adipose tissue and skeletal muscle. In this study, we investigated possible remodeling effects of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) in WAT depots. Changes in the expression of genes related to thermogenesis and fatty acid oxidation and levels of phosphorylated retinoblastoma protein were analyzed in WAT depots of adult NMRI male mice acutely injected with ATRA or vehicle, together with biometric and blood parameters. Body fat loss after ATRA treatment was unaccompanied by any increase in circulating nonesterified fatty acids or ketone bodies and accompanied by increased rectal temperature. The treatment triggered an up-regulation of the mRNA levels of uncoupling proteins 1 and 2, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1alpha, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha, muscle- and liver-type carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1, and subunit II of
cytochrome oxidase
in different WAT depots. Levels of phosphorylated retinoblastoma protein in WAT depots were increased after ATRA treatment. Adipocyte size was reduced, and the number of multilocular adipocytes was increased in inguinal WAT of ATRA-treated mice. The results indicate that ATRA favors the acquisition of brown adipose tissue-like properties in WAT. Understanding the mechanisms and effectors involved in the remodeling of WAT can contribute to new avenues of prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
