The enzymatic activities of two mitochondrial enzymes, i.e.
succinate dehydrogenase
and NADH-
cytochrome c reductase
were investigated in the brain of rats at different stages of post-natal development. In addition, the effect of the pharmacological treatment with two drugs, nicergoline and bamethan, able to interact with the alpha or the beta receptors respectively, was evaluated. The results show that both the enzymatic activities rapidly increase in the first days of extra-uterine life, thus indicating an adaptation of mitochondrial oxidative processes to post-natal environmental conditions. The pharmacological treatment with the two drugs does not induce any changes in the enzymatic activities tested.

The effect of adrenalectomy on the activities of monoamine oxidase (MAO), NADH
cytochrome c reductase
(NCR),
succinate dehydrogenase
, malate dehydrogenase, fumarase, NAD+ nucleosidase and acid phosphatase in homogenates of rat hearts was examined. Besides MAO only the NCR activity increased. However, both the total and the rotenone-insensitive NCR activities increased, with that of the rotenone-insensitive being about half of the total, which indicated that the effect of adrenalectomy was exerted on components of this enzyme localized on both the inner and outer membranes of the mitochondrion. The lack of effect on the other enzymes suggests that adrenalectomy has a relatively selective action on MAO and NCR, and does not work by a generalized increase in protein synthesis or by an effect on the FAD cofactor. The MAO increase was seen with a variety of substrates, and was due to a rise in Vmax without change in Km. The response to adrenalectomy in the summer differed from that seen in the winter. The possible reasons for these effects of adrenalectomy are discussed.

The mechanism of excretion of foreign protein in the kidneys of immunized animals is discussed.

The initial part of the axon including the axon hellock, the initial unmyelimated segment and the beginning of myelinated axon was studied electron microscopically during regeneration, 1--30 days following a crush lesion of the rat hypoglossal nerve. Large mitochondria reaching 1.1 mum in diameter, with abundant cristae and dense granules in the matrix were observed between days 3--21. By crossed immunoelectrophoresis with membrane antiserum, 17 antigens have been detected in fractions from plasma membranes of M. lysodeikticus solubilized with Triton X-100. Absorption tests with protoplasts have demonstrated that eight of the antigens are expressed on the surface. Of these antigens the major one has been identified as a succinylated mannan. Five of the principal immunoprecipitates unaffected by absorption with protoplasts were shown by zymograms to possess the following enzymic activites:

Metabolic and vascular adaptation of teleost lateral propulsive musculature to an active mode of life was investigated in four pelagic teleosts (mackerel, yellowtail scad, pilchard and Australian salmon). Histochemical profiles and capillarisation data of the red and white muscle were compared to those of less active demersal species. Pelagic white muscle stained positively for the aerobic enzymes

, and had both subsarcolemmal and intermyofibrillar mitochondria which corresponded to the loci of the histochemical stain. Subsarcolemmal mitochondria tended to be localised close to capillaries. In contrast, white muscle from demersal species was unstained for the same enzymes and was devoid of mitochondria. Red muscle of all species had abundant mitochondria and stained intensely for aerobic enzymes. Capillarisation was quantified by determining the percentage of fibres surrounded by a given number of peripheral capillaries, mean fibre diameter, mean number of peripheral capillaries, capillary: fibre ratio and sharing factor where appropriate. Red muscle of mackerel, Australian salmon, pilchard and scad are better vascularised than red muscle of the flathead having 153, 200, 242, 291 and 309 microns 2 of cross-sectional fibre area per peripheral capillary, respectively. White muscle of mackerel, pilchard and scad are better vascularised than white muscle of the Australian salmon and flathead having 2040, 3367, 4992, 9893 and 10,469 microns 2 of cross-sectional fibre area per peripheral capillary, respectively. Red muscle of Australian salmon had distinct regional variation. Deep red muscle was found to be more highly vascularised (4.2 peripheral capillaries per muscle fibre) than lateral red muscle (1.9 peripheral capillaries per muscle fibre). Red muscle of the other species was less heterogeneous. White muscle capillarisation was slightly variable in all species. It is concluded that the white muscle of the pelagic species studied is functionally and structurally adapted for sustained aerobic activity with relatively abundant mitochondria being preferentially situated close to the source of gas and metabolite exchange.
