1. Female albino rats were treated with a total of 28 mg of chlormadinone acetate (CMA) for 28 days. In the adrenal cortex, the ovary, the vagina, and the uterus the activities of 3-beta-ol-steroiddehydrogenase, of dl-beta-OH-butric acid dehydrogenase, of alcaline and acid phosphatases, of DPN-
diaphorase
, of ATP-ase, and of non-specific esterases do not differ from untreated controls. 2. In the external muscle layer of the myometrium strong cholinesterase (ChE) activity was induced by C.M.A. A corresponding high ChE activity is normally found in immature rats or in estrus. 3. Furthermore, by treatment with CMA, ChE activity was induced in the tubular glands of the endometrium. This activity is found in the small parts of glomerate glandular terminals only but not in the rest of the glandular epithelium, nor in the epithelium of the cavum. It could be demonstrated that a corresponding ChE activity normally appears in the second third of pregnancy. The ChE activity induced by CMA was considerably higher and more widespread than during normal pregnancy. 4. It is concluded that in the endometrial glands a development similar to pregnancy is initiated by CMA. But development stops at the stage of ChE activity, thus leading to accumulation of ChE active cells.

Frozen sections of eight odontogenic cysts, including one keratocyst, were incubated to show the following enzyme activities: NADH2
diaphorase
,
NADPH2 diaphorase
, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase and leucine aminopeptidase. The disbribution of lipid was shown by the oil red 0 method. The activities of all three oxidative enzymes were strongest in epithelial cells bordering hyalin bodies and in basal cells in the epithelial lining. Hydrolytic enzyme activity was absent from all but the most superficial epithelial cells but was present in macrophages and, in lesser amounts, in granular material in the same sections. The granular material frequently contained lipid. The lack of hydrolytic enzyme activity in bordering epithelial cells is inconsistent with the theory that hyalin bodies form from degenerating blood vessels. High aerobic oxidative enzyme activity in the same cells also conflicts with the concept that the bodies are a keratinous product. The findings lend support to the theory that hyalin bodies are an epithelial secretion.

The initial part of the axon including the axon hellock, the initial unmyelimated segment and the beginning of myelinated axon was studied electron microscopically during regeneration, 1--30 days following a crush lesion of the rat hypoglossal nerve. Large mitochondria reaching 1.1 mum in diameter, with abundant cristae and dense granules in the matrix were observed between days 3--21. They formed clusters in the initial myelinated segment of the axon. End-to-end contacts and ribosomes around them were very often visible. The large mitochondria exhibited strong succinate dehydrogenase and NAD - H2
diaphorase
activities. The relationship between the appearance of large and active mitochondria in the initial part of the axon and the elevated axonal transport during regeneration of the peripheral nerve is also discussed.

The distribution of succinic dehydrogenase, HApi-
diaphorase
, glucose-6-phosphatdehydrogenase, alkaline and acid phosphatases and glucose-6-phosphatase was studied by means of the incubation of whole cestodes. Succinic dehydrogenase, NAD-
diaphorase
and glucose-6-phosphatdehydrogenase are connected in general with the fixating apparatus of the scolex and genital organs; phosphatases -- with the integument tissues, excretory system and calcareous corpuscles. The results obtained are in complete agreement with the available data on the distribution of the enzymes studied. The incubation method of whole cestodes can be useful for field works.

The carcinogens, N-acetyl-aminofluorene, 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene, 3,4-benzpyrene and 3-methylcholanthrene, increase the activity of the soluble enzyme D-T-
diaphorase
. This action is observed 24 h after the administration of these chemicals to rats. Dicumarol blocks this effect. Dicumarol does not inhibit the increase in activity of the microsomal aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase system as elicited by 3,4-benz(a)pyrene and 3-methylcholanthrene. The functional significance of these findings and the possible role of cytosolic enzymic changes in chemical toxicity are discussed.

Damaged epidermal cells present in psoriatic lesions were investigated using histochemical and histomorphological methods including ultrathick sections. In early lesions these cells were found throughout the epidermis, being particularly numerous in the upper part of the latter and around the adnexa. In a later developmental stage the damage to the keratinocytes in the suprapapillary region was found to precede the damage to the basement membrane. These findings, together with the difference between the damaged keratinocytes lining the ascending side and the venous limb of the papilla respectively with regard to degree of severity of the damage, suggest that blood stasis is the cause of the regressive changes in the suprapapillary epidermis. The enzymatic activity of non-specific esterases and acid phosphatases was increased and that of succindehydrogenases and DPN-
diaphorase
was decreased in damage keratinocytes. The significance of these findings in relation to the genesis and development of psoriasis is discussed. The view is expressed that there is a causal relationship between damage to the epidermal cells and proliferation of epidermis.

The case of a 35 years-old man, with chronic proximal muscle atrophy in which at the muscle biopsy tubular aggregates were found by histochemistry procedures is reported. The tubular aggregates stained positive with the modified Gomori trichrome, haematoxylin-eosin, DPNH-
diaphorase
, non specific esterases, phosphorylase, P.A.S., oil red O and lactate dehydrogenase. They did not show in the routine and acid pre-incubated ATPase, acid and alkaline phosphatases and succinate dehydrogenase. Only found in type II fibers. A brief discussion about the pathogenesis and function of the tubular aggregates is made. The authors believe that the tubular aggregates in this case are secondary to prolonged use of phenobarbital and diphenylhydantoin, associated with the basic denervation process and alcohol abuse.

Methemoglobinemia and mental retardation associated with NADH-
diaphorase
deficiency was found in a 2-year-old girl of Spanish origin. She showed no NADH-
diaphorase
activity in either erythrocytes or leukocytes, but electrophoretic studies of the hemolysate showed traces of an enzyme with normal mobility. Cytochrome b5 reductase activity was also found to be absent in the leukocytes of the propostius. Intermediate NADH-
diaphorase
activity was found in erythrocytes and leukocytes in her parents and her sister in accordance with the autosomal recessive mode of inheritance of this enzymopathy. The relationship between a generalized cytochrome b5 reductase deficiency and the progressive neurological involvement in our patient is discussed briefly.

15 ditetrazolium salts were examined to prove their qualities for histochemical techniques. The succinate dehydrogenase, the lactate dehydrogenase and the
diaphorase
I in hearts, muscles, livers, kidneys and brains of rats were demonstrated for it. The results show that NBT is the best allround tetrazolium salt for the histochemical demonstration of dehydrogenases. For the study of special questions it is suitable to use other tetrazolium salts, too.

The cerebral thrombosis of the rat with 35 micrometer labeled microspheres gives infarcted areas easily seen. After 15 min, in these areas, there is no change in NADH diaphorase-, succinic-dehydrogenase-, mono-amino-oxidase-, glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase-, isocitric dehydrogenase-, lactic-dehydrogenase-, ATPase, alpha galactosidase-, acid phospatase activity. After 2, 4, 6 h all these activities diminish in the neuropil but they are preserved in the neurones for
diaphorase
, succinic-dehydrogenase and mono-amino-oxidase. The margin of infarcted areas shows a strong staining for acid phosphatase. Before 2 h there is not enzymatic changes neither oedema. This experimental model seems trustly and could be developped.
