Cardiac tissue obtained by left-ventricular endomyocardial biopsy from patients with valvular heart-disease was assayed for marker enzyme activities of subcellular organelles and these were correlated with left ventricular function as assessed by haemodynamic studies. In patients with poor left ventricular function, calcium-dependent adenosine-triphosphatase (A.T.P.ase) activity, predominantly localised to the myofibrils, was strikingly reduced. Activity of lactate dehydrongenase, a cytosol enzyme, was significantly increased in tissue from patients with poor left ventricular function. The activity of enzymes associated with sarcolemma (5'-nucleotidase), mitochondria (glutamate dehydrogenase and monoamine oxidase), microsomes (neutral alpha-glucosidase), and lysosomes (acid phosphatase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase) was no different in patients with good or poor left ventricular function. It is suggested that reduced myofibrillary A.T.P.ase concentration is the biochemical basis for the impaired ventricular function.

UVA light photodamages epidermal cells, as measured by inhibition of enzymatic activity and inhibition of respiration. This photodamage is greatly augmented in the presence of protoporphyrin as a photosensitizer. The increase in photodamage is greater for the cytosolic and mitochondrial enzymes lactate dehydrogenase and glutamate dehydrogenase and least for the lysosomal enzymes beta-glucuroninidase and N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase. Upon irradiation in the presence of protoporphyrin, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase is released from the epidermal cells. These results may help to explain some features of the pathogenesis of erythropoietic protoporphyria.

The pregnant rats were treated with formaldehyde (0.5 mg/kg daily per os) during whole period of pregnancy. The activity of cytochrome-c-oxidase, malate dehydrogenase, nucleotidase, glucose-6-phosphatase, beta-glucuronidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, beta-galactosidase, H(+)-ATPase, glutamate dehydrogenase, NAD- and NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase, fructose-bisphosphate aldolase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and content of protein in liver celts of offsprings (newborns, 2 weeks age and 2 months age) were studied. It was shown differences in development enzyme systems of control and experimental animals during ontogenesis.
