The effect of prolonged administration of heparin on the histophysiological characteristics of the subcomissural organ (SCO) of the brain and adrenal glomerular zone (AGZ) was studied in 30 male rats. It was established that heparin inhibits the functional activity of AGZ adrenocorticocytes. This is associated with the lowered content of 3-beta-ol-steroid dehydrogenase, RNA, total protein, and a decrease in the zone width (by 50%). Ependimocytes of brain SCO show an abruptly reduced activity of
glutamate dehydrogenase
, NAD-dependent alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase

, which is evidence of their secretory function inhibition. The changes indicate the presence of the functional relationship between the ependimocytes of brain SCO and AGZ adrenocorticocytes as well as to the participation of brain SCO in AGZ function control.

The renal effect of the daily administration of gentamicin to male albino rats (20 mg/kg body weight) for 6 consecutive days on some biochemical systems of the kidney was examined. In mice, feeding with griseofulvin leads to the rapid accumulation of protoporphyrin in liver mitochondria. When liver mitochondria from mice fed with griseofulvin for 2 days are exposed to irradiation (320-400 nm), uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation followed by inhibition of respiration occurs at light doses above 3-5 kJ/m2. Quantitatively, however, when protoporphyrin is added externally, more protoporphyrin is taken up by lysosomes, and photoinactivation of the lysosomal enzymes is correspondingly more severe. The results are further evidence that porphyrin-induced photodamage is largely determined by the solubility properties of the porphyrins and the target structures [Sandberg & Romslo (1980) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 593, 187-195], and also that protoporphyrin-induced photodamage is essentially similar whether protoporphyrin is generated endogenously or added exogenously.

Histometric data obtained by the point counting method, and the enzyme patterns of glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, fatty degradation and energy transfer have been determined in the same muscle specimens of m. vastus lateralis from 12 untrained patients between the ages of 4 and 78 years who suffered no disturbance of the neuromuscular system. Activities of 18 enzymes have been related to pure muscle weight corrected for fatty and connective tissue content, as well as to single fibre weight. A comparable muscle enzyme pattern was found in persons of around 20 years old and around 70 years old when expressed per gram of single fibre weight. However, in terms of grams of pure muscle weight, a significant activity decrease with age was obtained for 6-phosphofructokinase, triosephosphate dehydrogenase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, whereas activity of hexose diphosphatase increased with age as also did 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase activity. Five other cytoplasmic enzyme activities involved in glycolysis and energy transfer did not change significantly with age, nor did lysosomal

in pooled stimulated with 1% pilocarpin saliva of rats fed a water ration with 5 and 20 mg/liter fluorine in comparison with control rats fed water with fluorine concentration of 0.21 mg/liter. Noteworthy that alkaline phosphatase activity was virtually unchanged at fluorine concentrations 5 and 20 mg/liter in the water. The significance of the results as far as it regards the pathogenesis of caries and fluorosis is discussed.

The effect of carrot extract on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced acute liver damage was evaluated. The increased serum enzyme levels (viz., glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, glutamate pyruvate transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, sorbitol and

) by CCl4-induction were significantly lowered due to pretreatment with the extract. The extract also decreased the elevated serum bilirubin and urea content due to CCl4 administration. Increased activities of hepatic 5'-nucleotidase,

, acid ribonuclease and decreased levels of succinic dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphatase and cytochrome P-450 produced by CCl4 were reversed by the extract in a dose-responsive way. Cell bodies of cardio-vascular receptors localized in the ganglion nodosum of rabbits exposed to experimental emotional stress were studied with the light and electron microscope and histochemically. Under emotional stress some rabbits demonstrated almost unchanged arterial pressure and only a small increase in heart rate, while other animals displayed strongly marked disturbances of their blood circulation leading to the acute heart deficiency at the end of the experiment. In the stress-resistant rabbits, microscopic anatomy and ultrastructure of neurons indicated their increased activity. Activities of lysosomal enzymes--

and aminopeptidase--were found to be at the control level, while the activity of mitochondrial enzyme--

--was slightly increased. On the other hand morphological evidence of severe hyperactivity and exhaustion was revealed in neurons of the stress-predisposed rabbits. Moreover the activities of all three enzymes studied were significantly increased. These results indicate correlation between the structural and metabolic changes occurring under experimental emotional stress in nodosal neurons and the extent of hemodynamic changes.

, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) metabolism were studied by quantitative cytochemical methods in brain motor structures (sensorimotor cortex, caudate nucleus) and in structures not directly related to motor functions (hippocampus) of rats with high and low motor activity. After L-DOPA (madapar) cessation significant changes were revealed in the formation of motor system of the brain, primarily in the group of rats with low motor activity. It is suggested that a decrease in MAO activity after madapar cessation may be responsible for dyskinesia arising after cessation of L-DOPA preparations treatment.
