Regardless of the cause of the hepatic disease, weight loss, anorexia, dullness and depression were consistent features. Signs of hepatic encephalopathy, such as blindness, head pressing, excitability, ataxia and weakness were less common and, together with pyrexia and jaundice, were grave prognostic signs. Plasma ammonia concentrations were significantly elevated compared to clinically normal cattle, but such changes were not always accompanied by a decline in plasma urea concentrations. In normal, healthy cattle, the plasma ammonia:urea concentration ratio is 9:1 and the plasma ammonia:glucose concentration is 11:1. In hepatic disease, a plasma ammonia:glucose ratio > 40:1 or plasma ammonia:urea ratio > 30:1, particularly with a rising total ketone body concentration and a declining glucose concentration, carried a guarded prognosis. The study suggested that other factors, such as hypokalaemia, alkalosis, short-chain volatile fatty acids, and false and true neuro-transmitters, may be important in the pathogenesis of hepatic coma in cattle.

Eupatorium adenophorum leaves cause hepatotoxicity and cholestasis in rats. The hepatotoxicant has been characterized as 9-oxo-10,11-dehydroageraphorone (ODA), a cadinene sesquiterpene. Oral administration of ODA, mixed in feed to rats, caused jaundice in 24 h. The liver of the intoxicated animals had focal areas of hepatocellular necrosis, proliferation, and dilation of bile ducts with degenerative changes in the lining epithelium. Age-related changes in adenyl purine release from rat arteries and endothelial cell (EC) plasma membrane (PM) fluidity were studied. High performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence revealed that aging significantly decreased the release of adenyl purines. Pyrene-excimer spectroscopy disclosed that EC PM fluidity of aged rats decreased more significantly than that of young rats. An increase in cholesterol content and a decrease in the unsaturation index (USI) of fatty acids in cholesterol-enriched ECs reduced PM fluidity and

Moreover, a decrease in cholesterol content and an increase in the USI of fatty acyl chains of the PM in docosahexaenoic acid-enriched ECs concurrently increased enzyme activity and extracellular adenosine. Therefore, decreases in PM fluidity, observed with age-dependent increased cholesterol and decreased USI, induce a decrease in 5'-ND activity, decrease extracellular adenosine levels, and might relate to hypertension in aged rats.
