The activities of five mitochondrial enzymes tested in liver from patients with Reye's syndrome were measured. Citrate synthase,
glutamic dehydrogenase
,
succinic dehydrogenase
, pyruvate carboxylase, and pyruvate dehydrogenase were all outside of the range shown by control samples and well below them in activity. The activity of two extramitochondrial enzymes, glucose-6-phosphatase, which is a microsomal enzyme, and fructose-1,6-diphosphatase, which is a soluble enzyme, were in the normal range in samples from Reye's syndrome patients. In both muscle and brain the activities of the mitochondrial enzyme, citrate synthase,
glutamic dehydrogenase
, and
succinic dehydrogenase
were all within the control range. Pyruvate dehydrogenase was found to be normal in muscle from these patients.

The brains of 35 male Wistar rats weighing 250 g were histologically and histochemically examined after a chronic intoxication due to five-month exposure to carbon disulfide. Morphologically, myelin sheath disruptions within the longitudinal tract systems of the spinal cord, destructions of individual ganglion cells in all brain regions and elective parenchyma necroses in the frontal and parietal cerebral cortices were found. The histochemical assays for enzyme activities of monoamine oxidase, ATPase, glucose 6-phosphatase, acetylcholine esterase and
succinic dehydrogenase
in the entire central nervous system revealed values identical to those obtained for control animals. Only
succinic dehydrogenase
and acetylcholine esterase revealed focal reduction in activities within the elective parenchyma necroses. After twenty-week duration of experiments a moderate decrease in activities of arylsulfatases and
glutamic dehydrogenase
in the entire central nervous system was found. Eventual causes responsible for these changes are discussed.

) was carried out in the ependymal cells of the floor of the third cerebral ventricle, the so called tanycytes, in case of an increased adrenocorticotrophic function of the hypophysis attained by bilaterial adrenalectomy, and in depression of this function as a result of chronic dexametasone administration. The activity of the enzymes under study decreased 2, 3 and 4 weeks after bilateral adrenalectomy. The activity of lactic dehydrogenase, glucerophosphoric dehydrogenase and

increased in the tanycytes during administration of 5 gamma of dexametasone. Chronic administration of 100 gamma of dexametasone was accompanied by a toxic action of the preparation (a marked reduction in the weight of the adrenal glands, a negative body weight gain, and an aggravation of the animal's general condition). The results obtained pointed to the existence of a reverse correlation between the metabolic activity of tanicytes and the adrenocorticotrophic function of the hypophysis.

Chronic ethanol consumption by baboons (50% of energy from a liquid diet) for 18 to 36 mo resulted in significant depletion of hepatic S-adenosyl-L-methionine concentration: 74.6 +/- 2.4 nmol/gm vs. 108.9 +/- 8.2 nmol/gm liver in controls (p less than 0.005). The depletion was corrected with S-adenosyl-L-methionine (0.4 mg/kcal) administration (102.1 +/- 15.4 nmol/gm after S-adenosyl-L-methionine-ethanol, with 121.4 +/- 11.9 nmol/gm in controls). Ethanol also induced a depletion of glutathione (2.63 +/- 0.13 mumol/gm after ethanol vs. 4.87 +/- 0.36 mumol/gm in controls) that was attenuated by S-adenosyl-L-methionine (3.89 +/- 0.51 mumol/gm in S-adenosyl-L-methionine-methanol vs. 5.22 +/- 0.53 mumol/gm in S-adenosyl-L-methionine controls). There was a significant correlation between hepatic S-adenosyl-L-methionine and glutathione level (r = 0.497; p less than 0.01). The developmental pattern of several key enzymes in brain of pups born to mothers receiving high levels of iodide (1.1 mg daily intake) during pregnancy and lactation were followed up to the weaning period. We found that in the initial states of postnatal development,

increased above control levels, whereas
succinic dehydrogenase
decreased. At late stages, we observed differences in phosphofructokinase and malic enzyme activities which were all increased at 30 days. There was no change in hexokinase. Animal weight did not vary with respect to controls and we only obtained discrete increases (not statistically different) in serum thyroxine values, which led us to assume that the enzymatic modifications might be a consequence of either a very mild hormonal alteration or to the direct effect of iodide.
