Cytophotometric measurements of the activities of 5 oxidative enzymes (succinate, malate, lactate,
NAD+
-linked isocitrate and NADH dehydrogensases) have been made in anterior horn cells of the lumbar and cervical spinal cord of the rabbit. The thickness of tissue sections was measured by an interference microscope and various optical and chemical precautions were taken to diminish the possible errors that might be involved in cytophotometry. The findings of the study indicated a unimodal distribution of the activities of all of the enzymes studied in anterior horn cells, though there was a wide range of enzyme concentration among different cells. Thus the findings in the rabbit are consistent with the "constant proportion" hypothesis of the activity of certain oxidative enzymes, and are contrary to a previous finding that there may be two populations of
succinate dehydrogenase
-containing anterior horn cell.

A change in the activity of

- and NADP-diaphorases was studied in the dissociated culture of the cerebellum of neonatal rats under the effect of immune serum of the animals with an experimental allergic pertussis encephalomyelitis. There was revealed an increase in the activity of oligodendrocytes following a 3-hour exposure with the immune serum and a reduction of the activity of the enzymes under study in the same cells after a 12-hour exposure of the cultures with the serum. In difference from oligodendrocytes, the astrocytes displayed a high activity of all the enzymes under study after a 12-hour exposure.

A study of ingestion and elimination of cells of peritoneal exudate (CPE) of mouse labeled antigens of various physico-chemical nature with a simultaneous analysis of their influence on the function of the enzymatic systems of macrophages showed that both the corpuscular (sheep erythrocytes, typhoid vaccine) and the soluble (albumin, endotoxin of S. typhi, tetanus and staphylococcus toxoid) antigens caused a unitypical reaction of the cells of monocytic phagocytic system. Thirty minutes after the administration the principal mass of labeled antigens (albumin, typhoid vaccine, sheep erythrocytes) was phagocytized by macrophages and was revealed chiefly in their phagolysosomal fraction. The greater part of radioactive material was eliminated in the course of the first 24 hours; however, some of it could be found in the macrophages for a long time. During the process of phagocytosis the activity of lysosomal (catepsin, acid phosphatase, desoxyribonuclease, beta-glucoronidase) enzymes in the macrophages decreased and the activity of redox (
succinic dehydrogenase

NAD
-N2-diaphorase) enzymes became intensified. A fall of catepsin activity in the CPE of mice 30 minutes after the intraperitoneal administration of the antigens was accompanied by its activation in the cells of the spleen.

The histoenzymatic method was applied to the study of distribution of the activity of the redox enzymes in the myocardium of the ventricles in rats; distribution of the activity of lactic and malic dehydrogenase and of alpha-glycerophosphate proved to be the most manifest near the apex of the heart and was expressed in the presence of "spotty" areas of increased activity against the general homogeneous background of formazan deposits. The activity of mitochondrial upsilon-glycerophoric dehydrogenase was seen in all the portions of the ventricles and was characterized by an uneven distribution in the sarcoplasm with increase in the direction from the interdisc to the nucleus. Some mitochondrial biochemical parameters were determined in Wistar rats with experimentally induced arterial hypertension (AHT) treated with calcium blocking agents of the Verapamil series. The results obtained showed that
succinic dehydrogenase
(
SDH
) activity increased, in the group with AHT, by 23.4% as compared with the control group while in the group with AHT treated with Verapamil the activity of this enzyme increased by 46.7%. The
NAD+
dehydrogenase activity showed a moderate increase (15.7%) in the group with AHT and an increase by 22.3% after administration of Verapamil. The mitochondrial content in thiolic groups presented an increase of 12.5% in the group with AHT and of 24.4% in the treated group. The kinetics of the mitochondrial swelling-contraction also presented changes in as much as the cycle period, first increased then partially returned to normal values after Verapamil treatment. The strongly stimulating effect of Verapamil on the enzymatic activity in the Krebs cycle was also demonstrated.

and accumulation of the substrate fund of the cycle decreased 3.5-fold as compared to the control. The addition of polyunsaturated fatty acids to the ration produced a positive effect on Krebs cycle state: dehydrogenase activity was not significantly changed, accumulation of Krebs cycle substrate was two-fold lower. However, this ration did not completely abolish the toxic action of yellow phosphorus on Krebs cycle.

A study was made of the role of prolactin (PRL) in the regulation of thyroid function in intact animals and in those exposed to stress (swimming was used as physical exercise). A single daily dose of 125 micrograms of PRL per 100 g of body mass was injected subcutaneously in 0.5 ml of saline solution during a week to male rats (control: intact rats; injection of 0.5 ml of saline solution subcutaneously). Regulation of respiration at all rates between State 4 and State 3 was studied in heart mitochondria oxidizing FAD- and
NAD
-dependent substrates (succinate, pyruvate + + malate and palmitoylcarnitine). The creatine phosphokinase ADP-regenerating system was used which allows to fix the concentrations of extramitochondrial adenine nucleotides in such a way that the rate of respiration is controlled by mitochondrial processes alone. It was shown that respiration is controlled by delta mu(H+)-utilizing system within the respiration rate interval from State 4 till 70-80% of the maximal rate in State 3 (corresponding to physiological rates) both for
NAD
- and FAD-dependent substrates. The main step in the control of respiration near State 4 is proton leakage through the inner mitochondrial membrane, whereas in all the other parts of the mentioned interval this role is assigned to the adenine nucleotide translocator (ANT). The control coefficient for ANT is higher, while that of proton leakage is lower at the same relative rates of respiration with
NAD
-dependent substrates compared with succinate. These differences were found to be related to much higher values of the membrane potential generated at the same relative rates of succinate oxidation in comparison with the case with pyruvate + + malate. The contribution of delta mu(H+)-utilizing system to respiration control sharply decreases, whereas that of the delta mu(H+)-generating system increases at maximal rates of respiration near State 3. This phenomenon in more characteristic of succinate. In this case the control coefficient of ANT drops to zero, while that of
succinate dehydrogenase
rises to 0.7.
