Cells of the aerotolerant anaerobe Giardia lamblia respire in the presence of oxygen. Endogenous respiration is stimulated by glucose but not by other carbohydrates and Krebs cycle intermediates. Endogenous and glucose-stimulated respiration are insensitive to cyanide, malonate, and 2,4-dinitrophenol, but are inhibited by atabrin and iodoacetamide. G. lamblia produces ethanol, acetate and CO2 both aerobically and anaerobically either from endogenous reserves or exogenous glucose. Molecular hydrogen is not produced. The following enzyme activities were detected in homogenates: hexokinase, fructose-biphosphate

Histochemical studies have been conducted by applying hexokinase (HK),

(AD), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3),
succinate dehydrogenase

), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), and thiamine pyrophosphatase (TPPase) methods, as well as Nissl staining and Gomori's chrome-alum-hematoxylin-phloxine (CHP) methods to intercalated neurons of the supraoptic nucleus (SO) on Wistar strain rats. Intercalated neurons reacted weakly to the AD, G3, G6PD, and
SDH
tests, indicating that they belong to the category of ordinary neurons with low carbohydrate metabolism. Many fibrous astrocytes showing strong HK reactions surround neurosecretory neurons. However, they do not surround intercalated neurons with mild HK activity. These results indicate that the latter receive a poor supply of energy from glucose in the circulating blood in contrast to the former. Intercalated neurons are very rich in Nissl substance but lack CHP-positive material. They may have a high potential for synthesizing protein. The principal morphological features of the TPPase-positive Golgi material are peculiar and heterogeneous shape and poor development. These findings together with mild G6PD activity suggest that intercalated neurons are very likely to have poor synthesizing activity.

Skeletal limb muscles of the dog could generally be differentiated into three fibre types according to myosin adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) (pH 9.4) and
succinic dehydrogenase
activities. However, because this was not always possible, for comparative purposes only, division into low myosin ATPase (slow twitch) type I and high myosin ATPase (fast twitch) type II fibres was used. The percentage of these fibre types in m deltoideus, m triceps brachii caput longum, m vastus lateralis, m gluteus medius, m biceps femoris and m semitendinosus was examined in the greyhound, crossbred and foxhound. In all muscles the greyhound had a significantly higher percentage of fibres with high myosin ATPase activity at pH 9.4 than the other breeds, with almost 100 per cent in most muscles examined. The activities of nine enzymes and glycogen concentration were determined in m gluteus medius and m semitendinosus of the greyhound and crossbred. Significantly higher levels of creatine kinase,

Chronic sumithion toxicity in experimental crabs was induced by exposing them for 15 and 30 days to 0.04 ppm sumithion solution. The enzymes concerned with glycogenolytic metabolism (phosphorylase), glycolytic metabolism (

), aerobic metabolism [
succinate dehydrogenase

SDH
), malate dehydrogenase (MDH)], anaerobic metabolism, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alanine amino transaminase (AIAT)], were assayed in the muscle of control and experimental crabs. Glycogen, pyruvic acid, lactic acid were also estimated in the muscle of both control and experimental crabs. The muscle tissue of chronic sumithion-exposed crab exhibited suppressed glycogenolysis and glycolysis with an onset of gluconeogenesis. In general, chronic sumithion exposure seems to result in an elevation of the synthetic phase of muscle carbohydrate metabolism.

The energy metabolism of the English E-CMO strain of contagious equine metritis bacterium was studied in whole cells and cell extracts. This bacterium appears to have an active Krebs cycle and probably obtains energy by oxidative phosphorylation since glycolysis and the hexose monophosphate pathways appear to be absent. These conclusions are based on the findings that [U-14C]glucose incorporation by this bacterium is below the level of detection, and that respiration is stimulated by Krebs cycle intermediates (i.e., malate, citrate, and succinate), but not by glucose, fructose, maltose, or sucrose. The effect of DL alpha-lipoic acid on the nephrotoxic potential of gentamicin was examined. Intraperitoneal injection of gentamicin (100 mg/kg/day) to rats resulted in decreased activity of the glycolytic enzymes-hexokinase, phosphoglucoisomerase,
aldolase
and lactate dehydrogenase. The two gluconeogenic enzymes--glucose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1,6-diphosphatase, the transmembrane enzymes namely the Na+, K(+)-ATPase, Ca(2+)-ATPase, Mg(2+)-ATPase and the brushborder enzyme alkaline phosphatase, also showed decreased activities. Lipoic acid administration by gastric intubation at two different concentrations (10 mg and 25 mg/kg/day) brought about an increase in the activity of the glycolytic enzymes, ATPases and the TCA cycle enzymes. The gluconeogenic enzymes however showed a further decrease in their activities at both the concentrations of lipoic acid administered. These observations shed light on the nephroprotective action of lipoic acid against experimental aminoglycoside toxicity and the protection afforded at 25 mg/kg/day of lipoic acid was noted to be higher than that at 10 mg level.
