were depressed only in isolates of A. niger, A. terreus, and A. flavus. Also, molybdenum deficiency stimulated the specific activities of acid phosphatase and ribonuclease in the A. flavus isolate, although the specific activities of these enzymes decreased in other isolates. Bacillus subtilis cytoplasmic membranes contain several cytochromes which are linked to the respiratory chain. At least six different cytochromes have been separated and identified by ammonium sulphate fractionation and ion-exchange chromatography. They include two terminal oxidases with CO-binding properties and cyanide sensitivity. One of these is an aa3-type cytochrome c oxidase which has characteristic absorption maxima in the reduced-oxidized difference spectrum at 601 nm in the alpha-band and at 443 nm in the Soret band regions. In the alpha-band two separate electron transitions with Em = +205 mV and Em = +335 mV can be discriminated by redox potentiometric titration. The other CO-binding cytochrome c oxidase contains two cytochrome b components with alpha-band maxima at 556 nm and 559 nm. Cytochrome b556 can be reduced by ascorbate and has an Em + +215 mV, whereas cytochrome b559 has an Em = +140 mV. Furthermore a complex consisting of a cytochrome b564 (Em = +140 mV) associated with a cytochrome c554 (Em = +250 mV) was found. This cytochrome c554, which can be reduced by ascorbate, appears to have an asymmetrical alpha-peak and stains for heme-catalyzed
peroxidase
activity on SDS-containing polyacrylamide gels. A protein with a molecular mass of about 30 kDa is responsible for this activity. A cytochrome b559 (Em = +65 mV) appears to be an essential part of
succinate dehydrogenase
. Finally a cytochrome c550 component with an apparent mid-point potential of Em = +195 mV has been detected.

The location of carbonic anhydrase III (CA-III) in frozen sections of biopsies of Thoroughbred horse skeletal muscle was studied. Fibre types were determined by ATP-ase and
succinate dehydrogenase
staining. CA-III isozyme was detected using a
peroxidase
conjugated anti-CA-III antibody. CA-III was found to be localised in slow twitch oxidative fibres (ST), but was also present in fast twitch oxidative (FTH) fibres in small amounts. Fast twitch glycolytic (FT) fibres were stained lightly compared with control sections. The concentrations of CA-III in muscle and liver were 70 micrograms/mg protein and 4 micrograms/mg protein, respectively. CA-I and CA-II were not found in muscle extracts by the double immunodiffusion method.

activity was noticed at various concentrations of effluent treatment. When time-dependent changes in

activity were followed a nearly threefold increase was found with 12 hr of treatment after which a rapid loss was noticed. A correlation was established between the retardation of growth and development of effluent-treated rice seedlings with the activities of some key enzymes regulating growth and development.

The organization of the whisker representation within the neocortex of the rat is dependent on an intact periphery during development. To further investigate how alterations in this cortical map arise we examined the organization of thalamocortical afferents to the whisker representation in adult animals in which the infraorbital branch of the trigeminal nerve was cut on the day of birth. The disrupted pattern of thalamocortical projections to the vibrissae representation was apparent in the abnormal pattern of the anterograde transport of horseradish
peroxidase
from the thalamus, as well as in the abnormal pattern of
succinate dehydrogenase
activity. To determine the morphology of individual thalamocortical axons associated with this disrupted pattern, terminal arbors were "bulk-labeled" by injections of horseradish
peroxidase
into the white matter beneath the somatosensory cortex. Terminal arbors were identified by their laminar distribution of boutons corresponding to the specific thalamocortical afferent. The medial to lateral extent of these terminal arbors varied dramatically, from 350 to 1500 microns. In addition, terminal arbors innervating the same local area of cortex appeared to have varying degrees of overlap. Thus, the disruption of the neocortical vibrissae representation appears to involve the abnormal arborization of individual thalamocortical afferents. This finding supports the hypothesis that the fine-grain organization of the somatotopic map is dependent on the morphology and organization of individual thalamocortical arbors, which, in turn, are dependent on the periphery during development.

) enzymes of peripheral blood leukocytes of random-bred albino rats during simulation of toxic hepato-, nephropathy and hemic hypoxia of different gravity. The studies of the changes of leukocyte distribution according to the activity of the above enzymes were demonstrated to be informative for the diagnosis of prepathological conditions. The possibility was also shown of differentiating the gravity of the pathological conditions with the aid of an analysis of the enzymes under study by the method of linear discriminant functions.

and mitochondrial alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenases of peripheral blood lymphocytes in 90 patients with acute pneumonia on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 14 and 21 of the disease. It has been shown that changes in the activity of leukocytic enzymes are early and sensitive signs of acute inflammation in the lungs, reflecting the gravity and character of the disease. Some features of the enzymatic alterations depending on the degree of respiratory failure and allergic complications have been disclosed.

A procedure for the isolation and separation of three different subfractions of plasma membrane from the cellular slime mould Dictyostelium discoideum is described. The cells were disrupted by freeze-thawing in liquid N(2) and plasma membranes were purified by equilibrium centrifugation in a sucrose gradient. The cell surface was labelled with radioactive iodide by using the
lactoperoxidase
iodination method. Alkaline phosphatase was identified as a plasma-membrane marker by its co-distribution with [(125)I]iodide. 5'-Nucleotidase, which has been widely described as a plasma-membrane marker enzyme in mammalian tissues, was not localized to any marked extent in D. discoideum plasma membrane. The isolated plasma membranes showed a 24-fold enrichment of alkaline phosphatase specific activity relative to the homogenate and a yield of 50% of the total plasma membranes. Determination of
succinate dehydrogenase
and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase activities indicated that the preparation contained 2% of the total mitochondria and 3% of the endoplasmic reticulum. When the plasma-membrane preparation was further disrupted in a tight-fitting homogenizer, three plasma-membrane subfractions of different densities were obtained by isopycnic centrifugation. The enrichment of alkaline phosphatase was greatest in the subfraction with the lowest density. This fraction was enriched 36-fold relative to the homogenate and contained 19% of the total alkaline phosphatase activity but only 0.08% of the
succinate dehydrogenase
activity and 0.34% of the NADPH-cytochrome c reductase activity. Electron microscopy of this fraction showed it to consist of smooth membrane vesicles with no recognizable contaminants.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae was grown in batch culture over a wide range of oxygen concentrations, varying from the anaerobic condition to a maximal dissolved oxygen concentration of 3.5 muM. The development of cells was assayed by measuring amounts of the aerobic cytochromes aa(3), b, c, and c(1), the cellular content of unsaturated fatty acids and ergosterol, and the activity of respiratory enzyme complexes. The half-maximal levels of membrane-bound cytochromes aa(3), b, and c(1), were reached in cells grown in O(2) concentrations around 0.1 muM; this was similar to the oxygen concentration required for half-maximal levels of unsaturated fatty acid and sterol. However, the synthesis of ubiquinone and cytochrome c and the increase in fumarase activity were essentially linear functions of the dissolved oxygen concentration up to 3.5 muM oxygen.
