Blood samples from 509 Macushi and 623 Wapishana Amerindians of of Northern Brazil and Southern Guyana have been analyzed with reference to the occurrence of rare variants and genetic polymorphisms of the following 25 systems: (i) Erythrocyte enzymes: acid phosphatase-1, adenosine deaminase, adenylate kinase-k, carbonic anhydrase-1, carbonic anhydrase-2, esterase A1,2,3, esterase D, galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, nucleoside phosphorylase, peptidase A, peptidase B, phosphoglucomutase 1, phosphoglucomutase 2, phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, phosphohexoseisomerase, triosephosphate isomerase and (ii) Serum proteins: albumin, ceruloplasmin, haptoglobin, hemoglobin A2 and transferrin. Fifteen different rare variants were detected, involving 11 of these systems. In addition, a previously undescribed variant of ESA 1,2,3 which achieves polymorphic proportions in both these tribes is described. Excluding this variant, the frequency of rare variants is 1.1/1000 in 12510 determinations in the Macushi and 4.7/1000 in 15396 determinations in the Wapishana. The ESA 1,2,3 polymorphism was not observed in 382 Makiritare, 232 Yanomama, 146 Piaroa, 404 Cayapo, 190 Kraho and 112 Moro. Irregularities in the intratribal distribution of this polymorphism in the Macushi and Wapishana render a decision as to the tribe of origin impossible at present. Gene frequencies are also given for previously described polymorphisms of 5 systems: haptoglobin, phosphoglucomutase 1, erythrocyte acid phosphatase, esterase D, and galactose-1-phosphate-uridyl-transferase.

Serum protein (albumin, haptoglobin, ceruloplasmin, transferrin and group-specific component), haemoglobin, and red cell enzyme (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase, esterase D, adenylate kinase, glyoxalase I, phosphoglucomutase, lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, phosphohexose isomerase and superoxide dismutase) polymorphisms were studied among the Bengali Muslims of Bangladesh. In general, the gene frequencies of the polymorphic systems were similar to those in West Bengal and Assam. There appears to be a relatively strong Mongoloid influence in the present population as evidenced by the presence of HbE and TfDChi, higher frequencies of Hp1 and GcIF, and a lower AK2 frequency.

Alkaline phosphatase (Alp), esterase-I (Es-I), esterase-II (Es-II), carbonic anhydrase (CA), cell esterase (cEs), esterase-D (Es-D), isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICD), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD), tetrazolium oxidase (To), ceruloplasmin (Cp), Haptoglobin (Hp) and hemoglobin (Hb) in 58-75 samples of three species of tamarins (Saguinus mystax, S. labiatus and S. oedipus) were detected by means of horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. Two types (Es-I 1 and Es-I 2) for Es-I, four types (Es-II 1, Es-II 2, Es-II 3 and Es-II 2-3) for Es-II, three types (cEs 1, cEs 2 and cEs 1-2) for cEs, three types (PGD 1, PGD 2 and PGD 1-2) for PGD, two types (To 1 and To 2) for To, and three types (Hp 3, Hp 1-3 and Hp 2-3) for Hp were observed. However, Alp, CA, Es-D, ICD, MDH, Cp and Hb were monomorphic. In the S. mystax, no Es-II or PGD variants were observed. No Es-II variant was seen in the S. oedipus. Gene frequencies of cEs, PGD and Hb were biased in the three species. It is concluded that six polymorphic loci are useful as genetic markers for a species or individual.

The genetic structure of three Asiatic eskimos subpopulations (402 individuals), five coast chuckchies subpopulations (1793 individuals) and three reindeer chuckchies subpopulations (559 individuals) have been studied for 26 electrophoretic protein systems (33 loci). These are: adenilate-kinase (AK), diaphorase NAD X H (Dia), glyoxalase-1 (GLO-1), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (6GPT), glutamatpyruvate transaminase (GPT), glutamicoxalate transaminase (GOT), carbonic anhydrase-1 (Ca-1), catalase (Ct), acid phosphatase (AcP), lactate dehydrogenase (loci LDH-A and LDH-B), leucine aminopeptidase (Lap), malatedehydrogenase (MDH), purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP), superoxide dismutase (Sod), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD), phosphoglucomutase (loci PGM1 and PGM2), cholinesterase (loci c1--c5), alkaline phosphatase (Pp), esterase D (EsD), red cell esterase (Est) - 4 loci, albumin (Alb), haptoglobin (Hp), hemoglobine (Hb A and B), group-specific component (Gc), transferrin (Tf), ceruloplasmin (Cp). In addition, AB0 and Rh system blood groups and phenyl thiocarbamide taste sensitivity (PTC) have been studied. 12 of 36 loci are polymorphic (33.33%), heterozygosity for all loci in eskimos, coastal and reindeer chuckchies being 0.118 +/- 0.005, 0.130 +/- 0.002 and 0.120 +/- 0.004, respectively. These estimates do not differ essentially from heterozygosity at these loci for mongoloid groups living further south. The test for interpopulation heterogeneity has permitted to estimate contribution of the loci to the differentiation of these populations. The least heterogeneity has been found at loci where gene frequency distribution is the most specific for these ethnic groups.

Intramuscular injections of the title drug in a dose of 5 mg/kg (5% of the LD50) during 10 days produced in the liver and blood serum of white rats a decrease in the activity of glucokinase, succinate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase, ATPase and ceruloplasmin. The urea content in total phospholipids rose, whereas the content of triglycerides and hexosamine diminished. Ten and 20 days after the drug was discontinued the majority of these characteristics returned to normal. The activity of glucosophosphate isomerase, transketolase, glucose-6-phosphatase, fructose-1,6-diphosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase as well as the content of total cholesterol, free fatty acids, tyrosine, hydroxyproline, total protein, RNA and DNA remained unchanged.

A sample of 312 individuals belonging to Sheikh (80), Pathan (54), Ansari (82), Syed (33), Saifi (33) and Hindu Bania (30) populations were surveyed for four protein and three enzyme loci comprising 12 alleles. The markers used were protein (transferrin, haptoglobin, haemoglobin) and enzyme (lactate dehydrogenase, phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, adenylate kinase). Except caeruloplasmin, variants were found among all loci, though no rare variant appears. The populations show genetic equilibrium for all of the loci. Our gene frequencies show some difference from earlier studies for Muslims in general, there being no biradari wise study among Sunni Muslims earlier done anywhere in India or abroad. Heterozygosity ranged from 0.0123 to 0.1994 (Sheikh), 0.0182 to 0.2046 (Pathan), 0.0239 to 0.1844 (Ansari), 0.0587 to 0.3966 (Syed), 0 to 0.3909 (Bania); the average DST and GST values for the seven marker loci were 0.001032 and 0.00879, respectively. The results are discussed. The gene frequency study shows closer relationship of Ansaris and Saifis with native Hindu Banias, and may reflect on their probable conversion in the not remote past.
