Cryostat sections of normal human first-trimester placentae have been studied by indirect immunofluorescence to localize numerous protein antigens to well-defined anatomical regions. Transferrin was identified in the apical aspect of all trophoblasts. Fibrinogen/fibrin was also clearly demonstrated in speckled pattern in this location and similar reactions were also observed for alpha-2-macroglobulin, IgG and C3. Plasminogen was identifiable in trophoblasts, and
beta-2-microglobulin
was uniformly absent from these cells. Collagen and fibrinogen/fibrin were demonstrated on trophoblastic basement membrane, whereas IgG and C3 were only very rarely identified at this site. Few antisera gave strong staining of first-trimester villous stroma, although collagen was shown to contribute much of the stromal matrix. Fibrinogen/fibrin, plasminogen, alpha-2-macroglobulin, C4, C3, C1q, IgG and
caeruloplasmin
gave positive reactions in fibrin and fibrinoid areas, and phytohaemagglutinin was demonstrated to bind strongly to these areas as well as to trophoblastic basement membrane.

In 71 patients with fever and bacteremia without complications, a prospective study of acute-phase reactants is done. Raises in haptoglobin,
ceruloplasmin
, alpha-1-antitrypsin, protein C,
beta-2-microglobulin
, IgA and ferritin serum levels, together with leucocytosis and GSR, were very significant when diagnosis was done. Fibronectin, sideremia and transferrin were lowered. After 3 and 6 days of treatment haptoglobins, alpha-1-antitrypsin, protein C, ferritin, leucocytosis and GSR are lowered, while immunoglobulins, sideremia, transferrin and fibronectin raised, the latter until normalization. Fibronectin as well as changes in iron metabolism were very reliable parameters of inflammation and favorable evolution.

The investigation of cell composition and different biochemical parameters (
ceruloplasmin
, lactate dehydrogenase, aldolase, ferritin,
beta-2-microglobulin
) in cerebrospinal fluid has been performed in 37 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia at different clinicohematological stages. The age of the patients ranged from 16 to 67 years. CNS involvement has been diagnosed in 8 (21.6%) patients by clinical and cytological criteria and in 5 (13.5%) patients on the basis of changes in liquor cytograms and in biochemistry. Morphological substrate of leukemic infiltration may be represented by blast cells and cells of granulocytic line of all stages of differentiation. Direct correlation has been established between ferritin and
beta-2-microglobulin
levels in liquor and its cytological patterns. This permits a conclusion on possible usage of liquor concentration of
beta-2-microglobulin
and ferritin measurements as additional tests in the diagnosis of neuroleukemia in chronic myeloid leukemia.

Many of epidemiological studies have certified the relationship between welding and various forms of health damages. In our study we performed an immunological research within a group of twenty men, working in the risky environment of manufacturing of stainless steel constructions (11 welders and 9 grinders, average age was 31 years, 55% of smokers, average time period in welding occupational exposure was 8 years). The exposed group of men was compared with a group of healthy blood donors, marked as the control group (people with various types of employment, living in same locality as a people from exposed group). People within the control group were not occupationally exposed to harmful chemical compounds (from 30 to 100 men were chosen for the individual immune parameters, average age of the whole group was 38 years, 40% of smokers). When compared with the control group, the exposed group of welders and grinders showed higher level of C3 complement (p < 0.001), orosomucoid (p < 0.05),
beta-2-microglobulin
(p < 0.001), neopterin (p < 0.001) and all fagocytic cells (p < 0.001). On the contrary, in the group of exposed people decreased values of IgA (p < 0.001), IgG (p < 0.001), IgM (p < 0.001), transferin (p < 0.001), alpha-1-antitrypsin (p < 0.001), alpha-2-macroglobulin (p < 0.001), haptoglobulin (p < 0.001) and
ceruloplasmin
(p < 0.05) were found. Some of these changes were characteristic for the exposed group. They could be considered as precursors of biological markers of effect for given type of exposure.

IgA nephropathy is the most common cause of primary glomerulonephritis. There are different pathologic biopsy-based scoring systems in use, but there is no consensus among nephrologists yet regarding the best classification method. Our aim was to test urine proteomics as a non-invasive method for classification of IgA nephropathy. This aim was pursued by discovering novel prognostic protein biomarkers in urine, and linking them to pathogenesis of the disease through known signaling and metabolic pathways. 13 urine samples of the patients with biopsy-proven IgA nephropathy were analyzed via two proteomics approaches: nanoflow LC-MS/MS and GeLC-MS/MS. The results of label-free quantification were subjected to multivariate statistical analysis, which could classify patients into two groups, broadly corresponding to the primary and advance stages. The proteome classification correlated well with biopsy-based scoring systems, especially endocapillary hypercellularity score of the Oxford's classification. Differentially excreted candidate proteins were found as potential prognostic biomarkers: afamin, leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein,
ceruloplasmin
, alpha-1-microgolbulin, hemopexin, apolipoprotein A-I, complement C3, vitamin D-binding protein,
beta-2-microglobulin
, and retinol-binding protein 4. Pathway analysis suggested impairment of Extra Cellular Matrix (ECM)-Receptor Interaction pathways as well as activation of complement and coagulation pathway in progression of IgA nephropathy.
