Rats were fed by means of an esophagal tube with increased doses of D-penicillamine and given a diet with an optimal content of trace elements over a period of up to 6 weeks. There were no identifiable lasting effects of this dosage on cobalt,
selenium
and particularly zinc content. The reduction of copper in the kidneys was significant. Cu was unchanged in serum and brain. The remarkable increase in the copper content of the liver as a result of a possible counter regulation mechanism with intact
ceruloplasmin
synthesis is discussed. The potential clinical significance of these findings is pointed out.

Plasma zinc, copper,
selenium
, ferritin and whole blood manganese concentrations were measured in 22 children with kwashiorkor on admission to hospital and on days 5, 10 and 30 of refeeding. Twenty similarly aged, healthy, well nourished children served as controls. The mean (SEM) zinc, copper and
selenium
concentrations of 7.5 (0.93), 10.8 (0.64) and 0.29 (0.02) mumol/l, respectively, in the children with kwashiorkor on admission were all significantly lower than the values of 13.7 (0.66), 25.6 (1.72) and 0.72 (0.04) mumol/l in the controls. In contrast, the erythrocyte manganese level of 1.67 (0.09) micrograms/gHb and the median ferritin concentration of 293 micrograms/dl were significantly higher than in the controls. After 30 days there was full clinical recovery with significant weight gain and a return of the plasma albumin,
caeruloplasmin
, copper and ferritin to normal. However, manganese remained elevated and zinc and
selenium
concentrations remained significantly low. Our results suggest that nutritional rehabilitation of children with kwashiorkor is incomplete by 30 days and cannot be judged purely by a return of the plasma proteins to normal. Addition of selected trace elements to the diet may hasten full recovery.

The erythrocytes of subjects with moderate and severe alcoholic liver cirrhosis had an unbalanced antioxidant system (normal superoxide dismutase, low catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities, and low glutathione content). levels were in the normal range. Levels of the serum trace elements zinc and

were significantly low in subjects with moderate and severe cirrhosis, whose red cell half-life was also significantly short, as measured by radioactive chromium. These data suggest that the erythrocytes of subjects with moderate and severe alcoholic liver cirrhosis are less protected against oxidant stress. The particular erythrocyte antioxidant system and serum trace element pattern may play a role in the genesis of hemolytic disorders and of alcoholic hepatic damage.

The relationship between serum
ceruloplasmin
level and cancer incidence was investigated in a case-control study nested within a longitudinal study of 39,268 Finns participating in the Social Insurance Institution's Mobile Clinic Health Examination Survey carried out in 1968-1972. During a median follow-up of 8 years, 766 cancer cases were identified. Ceruloplasmin levels were determined from stored serum samples collected at the baseline from these cancer cases and from two matched controls per case. The overall incidence of cancer was positively associated with serum
ceruloplasmin
level. The association was strongest for lung cancer and other cancers related to smoking and, consequently, in males. The smoking-adjusted relative risk of lung cancer among men was 4.3 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.8-10.6) in the highest quintile of serum
ceruloplasmin
as compared with that in the lowest quintile. The corresponding relative risks for cancers related to smoking combined, and for cancers not related to smoking were 3.9 (CI = 1.9-8.4) and 0.9 (CI = 0.6-1.5), respectively. The elevated risk of lung cancer at high concentrations of serum
ceruloplasmin
persisted after further adjustment for several potential confounding factors such as serum levels of vitamins A and E and
selenium
. The risk was stronger during the first 6 years of follow-up than later, and strongest during the first 2 years. The most likely explanation of the present results thus is that high serum
ceruloplasmin
levels in lung cancer are mainly due to occult cancer.
