Various CSF proteins were studied in 255 definite multiple sclerosis patients at various disease stages and compared with corresponding values obtained from 174 controls. The CSF changes in acute multiple sclerosis patients included a significant increase of total proteins and of gamma globulin, IgG, IgA, IgM, alpha-2
ceruloplasmin
, 7S-gamma-1, and cytotoxic index for nerve cells in tissue culture, and significant decreases of pre-albumin, alpha-1, and alpha-2 and of the beta/gamma globulin ratio. The CSF levels of IgG, IgA, and IgM remained significantly higher in steroid-treated multiple sclerosis patients than in controls, but the levels often were significantly reduced while patients were on treatment or in remission. During remission or treatment with

and/or steroids, the alpha-2
ceruloplasmin
, 7S-gamma-1, and cytotoxic index were significantly reduced and the pre-albumin, alpha-1, and alpha-2 globulin classes and the beta/gamma ratio showed a tendency to return to normal.

It was found in experiments on male albino rats that hypophysectomy was accompanied by an increase of potassium (on account of its accumulation in the mitochondria, nuclei and the microsomes) and copper in the liver. At the same time there was an increase in this organ of tha activity of Mg-2+-Na-+-K-+-ATPase and Mg-+-ATPase, and also a rise of
ceruloplasmin
activity in the blood serum. STH and TTH restored the sodium content to the normal and increased potassium level in the liver of hypophysectomized rats.

and STH increased copper content in the hepatic tissue and normalized the activity of
ceruloplasmin
in the blood. All the hormones used promoted normalization of ATP-ase activity.

The effects of varying doses of a short-acting (methylprednisolone) and a long-acting (dexamethasone) synthetic glucocorticoid on extent and duration of alterations in plasma zinc and copper concentrations in normal humans are documented. Early after intravenous administration of either steroid, increases in plasma zinc and copper levels were observed. By 12 hours, plasma zinc concentrations had decreased below control levels and the extent and duration of the depression depended on the dosage of the steroid administered. No significant decrease was noted beyond 48 hours. The plasma copper levels did not decrease until after zinc levels began returning toward normal, reaching a peak depression at 48 hours and, at high doses of steroids, persisting until completion of the study at 96 hours. This difference in the time sequence suggests that different mechanism control plasma concentrations of the two metals. The serum zinc levels may depend on

Twelve Holstein bull calves (6 to 8 wk of age) were used to determine the influence of supplemental dietary Cr on
ACTH
, cortisol, and immune responses of calves experimentally inoculated with bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1). Calves supplemented with Cr received 3 mg Cr/d (Chromium, n = 6) of a high-Cr-yeast product. Following 53 d of treatment, all calves were fitted with jugular catheters, and blood samples were collected every 4 h into tubes containing ETDA. Twenty-four hours later, all calves were inoculated intranasally with BHV-1 (1 x 10(7) plaque-forming units in each naris). Serial blood collection continued at 4-h intervals for 6 d. Plasma was harvested, immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen, and stored at -20 degrees C. Individual rectal temperatures and urine samples were collected at the same time each day. Rectal temperatures were elevated (P < .05) on d 2, 3, 4, and 5 but were not affected by Cr treatment. Treatment with Cr did not affect secretion of

, cortisol, or plasma tumor necrosis factor-alpha, although clear circadian variation in

and cortisol occurred. No differences were detected in the concentrations of trace minerals excreted daily in the urine, lymphocyte proliferative response to mitogen stimulation, and neutrophil bactericidal function. The acute phase proteins,

and fibrinogen, also were not affected by treatment or viral challenge. These data suggest the Cr supplementation using high-Cr yeast (3 mg/d) did not alter stress responses of calves experimentally inoculated with BHV-1.
