The laboratory investigation of cases of Paget's disease has revealed results of three types :--small increases in the sedimentation rate, in the
ceruloplasmin
level, in the average corpuscule volume, and in uricaemia. These changes are of little practical value;--a considerable increase in the common stocks and in the turn-over of calcium, a frequently negative assessment with a parathyroid hormone level at the lower limit of normality. The levels of calcaemia and calciuria, little changed on average, may increase slightly after hospitalization. The use of these parameters is valuable but they are sometimes difficult to interpret;--an increase in the levels of alkaline phosphatases and of urinary hydroxyproline, in relation to the extent and the activity of the disease, and also of certain parameters of calcium-45 and of quantitative histology. A statistical study of the spontaneous evolution of hydroxyprolinuria in 50 patients with Paget's disease who were not treated for less than 3 years, allowed the authors to establish in what conditions a change induced by calcitonin or mithramycin is significant.

Circadian rhythms for the factors listed below were investigated in 14 subjects hospitalized in apparently good health: total proteins, albumin, pre-albumin, alpha-1-antitrypsin, orosomucoid,
ceruloplasmin
, C3, C-reactive protein, haptoglobin and transferrin. Seven venous blood samples were taken from each subject over a 24 hour period. A circadian rhythm was detected for the total proteins, prealbumin, alpha-1-antitrypsin, orosomucoid,
ceruloplasmin
and transferrin. The acrophases occurred at about 12 hour intervals and the authors research group are already investigating these rhythms for the "inflammation proteins" and the transport proteins in cancer and inflammatory processes.

Seventy six patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatism were treated with various non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs for 5 to 7 days. The average variations of several serum proteins were studied. The variation of haptoglobin remained nil. Those of other serum proteins remained negative and significantly different from zero, distributed from the greatest to the smallest value of the degree of statistical significance as follow :
ceruloplasmin
(p < 0.0001), orosomucoide (p < 0.02), fibrinogen (p < 0.02) alpha-2-macroglobulin (p < 0.04) and alpha-1-antitrypsin (p < 0.05). The study of the partial results showed the variability of the degree of significance of the serum proteins in relation to the non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. The practical interest of these serum protein seemed low to measure in the short term, the efficacy of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. Their interest in long term studies remains to be demonstrated compared with that of the measurement of the sedimentation rate by the technic of the sigma E.S.R.
