Starting from previous observations emphasizing an increased pseudocholinesterase (PCE) activity in obese and hyperlipemic subjects, the behaviour of this enzyme and of
ceruloplasmin
was studied in connection with changes of serum lipids and lipoproteins in various types of hyperlipoproteinemia. When compared to values detected in 67 middle-aged normal weight normolipemic subjects, PCE activity was found to be significantly greater (smaller than 0.001) in the 49
overweight
subjects without obvious hyperlipemia but presenting a moderate increase of the prebeta electrophoretic fraction. PCE activity was much higher in lean or
overweight
subjects with endogenous hypertriglyceridemia (68 patients with type IV and 86 patients with mixed hyperlipemia). The slight increase of mean values of PCE activity in the 53 subjects with type II-a was due mainly to
overweight
subjects, while this enzyme's activity was not significantly changed in lean subjects with pure hypercholesterolemia. PCE activity was positively correlated with serum triglyceride (r equals 0.540; p smaller than 0.001) and the prebeta electrophoretic fraction (r equals 610; p smaller than 0.001). The correlation with beta-lipoproteins was not significant. Ceruloplasmin levels were not significantly changed. It is suggested that elevation of PCE activity could be connected to mechanisms leading to an increased secretion rate of lipoproteins.

A series of clinical-chemical tests was conducted in 68 schizophrenic out-patients under long-term neuroleptic medication, with particular consideration of the hepatic metabolism, i.e.: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, alpha 1-glycoprotein,
ceruloplasmin
, fibrinogen, GPT, GOT, gamma-GT, total protein and serum-protein-electrophoresis. Furthermore, the glucose tolerance tests was carried out. In 44% of the patients an increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate and positive correlations with increased fibrinogen values were found. Increased gamma-GT-values were proven in 33% of the patients; they correlated positively with the increased GPT-and/or GOT-values as well as with pathological glucose tolerance values.
Overweight
of more than 10 kilos was found in 46% of the patients. A significant correlation between
overweight
and pathological glucose tolerance values existed. The results were interpreted as consequence of a light fatty liver.

To learn more about the effects of ambient air pollution on the human immune system, immunological parameters-16 serum proteins and circulating immune complexes--were determined for more than 500 women from the polluted area of Cologne, Germany, and a control area, Borken. The geometric mean values for immunoglobulins, complement components, haptoglobin, alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, alpha 1-antitrypsin,
ceruloplasmin
, alpha 2-macroglobulin, prealbumin, and transferrin were statistically significantly higher in Cologne than in Borken. No difference were found for C-reactive protein, rheumatoid factors, and anti-streptolysin O. For each of the parameters a logistic regression was fitted, thus controlling for the influence of a number of confounding factors. After controlling for possible confounders, the percentages of values above the norm for immunoglobulins, complement components, haptoglobin, and alpha-1-glycoprotein were statistically significantly higher in Cologne than in Broken. Nutritional status of 80 preoperative patients from programmed surgeries of hernias and lithiasis was studied by anthropometric and biochemical parameters. Nutritional deficiencies related to pathology were not expected in these patients. Results were as follows: 77% of the population showed

, being 15% obese. Prevalent protein intake, evaluated by the urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio, was adequate in 87.5% of the patients; however, patients presented 72% of albumin, 52% of prealbumin and 50% of RBP below reference values. Transferrin,
ceruloplasmin
, alpha 2-macroglobulin and haptoglobin were not decreased. Assessment of vitamin A, carotenes and vitamin C showed plasmatic levels below reference values in 16% of the patients for vitamin A, 5% for carotenes and 27% for vitamin C. Respect to calcium status, data of calcium/creatinine ratio show deficiency in 45% of the population. Respect to iron, the nutritional status was in general adequate, patients at risk being 5% by Htc, 11% by Hb, 5% by TS% and 12.5% by FEP, women showed over twice abnormal values than men. Although some isolated relations were observed, in this population sex, age and pathology were variable that did not affect in a relevant way the nutritional status. In spite of the individual analysis of each nutrient did not show important deficiencies, the analysis by patient showed that only a few of them (7%) presented an optimal biochemical profile with all the studied parameters within the reference values.

This study explores the relationship of inflammation-sensitive plasma proteins (ISPs) with the prevalence of diabetes and the interrelationships between ISPs and diabetes in the prediction of death and incidence of myocardial infarction and stroke. Plasma levels of fibrinogen, alpha1-antitrypsin, haptoglobin,
ceruloplasmin
, and orosomucoid were assessed in 6,050 men, aged 28-61 years. All-cause and cardiovascular mortality and incidence of myocardial infarction and stroke were monitored over 18.7 +/- 3.7 years. Prevalence of diabetes (n = 321) was significantly associated with ISP levels among
overweight
and obese men but not among men with BMI <25 kg/m(2). The association was similar for insulin resistance according to homeostasis model assessment. High ISP levels (two or more ISPs in the top quartile) increased the cardiovascular risk among diabetic men. The risk factor-adjusted relative risks for cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, and stroke were 2.8 (CI 1.8-4.5), 2.2 (1.5-3.2), and 2.5 (1.4-4.6), respectively, for diabetic men with high ISP levels (reference: nondiabetic men with low ISP levels). The corresponding risks for diabetic men with low ISP levels were 1.8 (1.1-3.0), 1.3 (0.8-2.1), and 1.2 (0.6-2.5), respectively. In conclusion, in this population-based cohort, diabetes was associated with increased ISP levels among

and obese men but not among men with normal weight. High ISP levels increased the cardiovascular risk similarly in diabetic as compared with nondiabetic men.

There was no age difference between the

group and the controls. All of the anthropometric variables, except the height of the

In a cross-sectional study involving subjects from the Reaching for Excellence in Adolescent Health cohort, we examined the associations between HIV status, disease severity, immune activation, and oxidative damage. Subjects (265 HIV-positive and 127 HIV-negative) were young (range: 14-23 years of age) and primarily female (75%) and black (67%). Many subjects, particularly female subjects, were
overweight
or obese. Relatively few HIV-positive subjects had advanced HIV disease (13%), and 54% were taking antiretroviral therapy (ART). The 2 markers of oxidative damage used in this study (plasma malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl concentrations) did not correlate with each other, and neither was higher in HIV-positive subjects than in HIV-negative controls. Increased oxidative damage was seen in association with male gender, cigarette smoking, marijuana use, immune activation (as indicated by activated CD8 T-cell counts and plasma C-reactive protein concentration), and use of ART, however. The purpose of the study was to analyse serum concentrations of four different positive acute phase proteins (APPs): C-reactive protein, haptoglobin, serum amyloid A and
ceruloplasmin
in a model of experimentally short-term developed obesity in Beagle dogs. All APPs were quantified by commercially available ELISA methods and C-reactive protein was also determined by a highly sensitive time-resolved fluorometric assay. There were no significant differences between APPs concentrations at the beginning and the end of the study in groups of dogs that increased their body condition scores. In addition, dogs with body condition scores of 4 and 5 did not shown significant differences for any of the acute phase proteins studied compared with control dogs of BCS of 3, with exception of a decrease in haptoglobin. induced in the experimental conditions of this study does not produce a significant change in acute phase proteins.

and obese adolescents studied, the evaluation of the serum concentrations of these biomolecules was found to be an important instrument that could be used to identify those subjects with an elevated risk of suffering cardiovascular disorders basically derived from a hypertensive status.
